Adrienne Rich (1929-2012): The Life of the Legendary Poet & Activist
democracynow.org - The legendary poet, essayist and feminist Adrienne Rich, who died on Tuesday at the age of 82, was one of the most celebrated poets of the last half century and a lifelong advocate for women, gay and lesbian rights, peace and racial justice. Rich drew widespread acclaim for her many volumes of poetry and prose, which brought the oppression of women and lesbians into the public spotlight. She was a key figure in the women's movement and an uncompromising critic of the powerful. In 1997, Rich famously declined to accept the National Medal of Arts in a protest against the Clinton administration, writing that art "means nothing if it simply decorates the dinner table of power which holds it hostage." We remember Rich's life with Pulitzer Prize winning author Alice Walker and Rich's literary agent Frances Goldin. Hearing Adrienne Rich Reading
Hearing Adrienne Rich Reading - An Unheeded Premonition by Bob Boldt I arrived early on campus At least five hundred chairs were deployed Awaiting the army of the erudite Who had come to hear the poet Adrienne Rich read On the campus of the University of Missouri. A small woman, slightly stooped With a professorial air that Perhaps belied her sharp eye Assumed the podium. Sizing up the room She began to read. For at least an hour Maybe more She read from her life's blood The stream of words of Passion for the world Its politics and injustice And the specific articles of Her indictment of it all. And above all were those Sharp eyes of one whom The world has wounded too Often for her to give up Her loving of it now. When finished she seemed Somehow used up Husked The kernel delivered To perhaps Her last generation. I spoke something to her At the reception that fortunately I can no longer recall And walked out into the soft September night The words of her last poem Just beginning to fade from Memory: "But the great dark birds of history screamed and plunged Into our personal weather They were headed somewhere else but their beaks and pinions Drove Along the shore, through the rages of fog Where we stood, saying 'I.'" The reassuring campus The smell of the late summer's night in my nostrils Filled me with joy and a fulfilling confidence. I was thinking that In spite of it all There was after all Hope that We could surmount the present difficulties And find a peace in the ...

Adrienne Rich - What Kind Of Times Are These?
Adrienne Rich reads her poem What Kind Of Times Are These? What Kind Of Times Are These? by Adrienne Rich (1929-2012) There's a place between two stands of trees where the grass grows uphill and the old revolutionary road breaks off into shadows near a meeting-house abandoned by the persecuted who disappeared into those shadows. I've walked there picking mushrooms at the edge of dread, but don't be fooled this isn't a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here, our country moving closer to its own truth and dread, its own ways of making people disappear. I won't tell you where the place is, the dark mesh of the woods meeting the unmarked strip of light — ghost-ridden crossroads, leafmold paradise: I know already who wants to buy it, sell it, make it disappear. And I won't tell you where it is, so why do I tell you anything? Because you still listen, because in times like these to have you listen at all, it's necessary to talk about trees.

Adrienne Rich "On Love"
On Love An honorable human relationship - that is one in which two people have the right to use the word "love" is a process, Delicate, violent, often terrifying to both persons involved, a process of refining the truths they can tell each other. It is important to do this because it breaks down human self-delusion and isolation. It is important to do this because in doing so we do justice to our own complexity. It is important to do this because we can count on so few people to go that hard way with us. Adrienne Rich en.wikipedia.org

Feminist poet and essayist Adrienne Rich dies
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — Adrienne Rich, a fiercely gifted, award-winning poet whose socially conscious verse influenced a generation of feminist, gay rights and anti-war activists, has died. She was 82. Rich died Tuesday at her Santa Cruz home from complications from rheumatoid arthritis, said her son, Pablo Conrad. She had lived in Santa Cruz since the 1980s. Through her writing, Rich explored topics such as women's rights, racism, sexuality, economic justice and love between women. Rich published more than a dozen volumes of poetry and five collections of nonfiction. She won a National Book Award for her collection of poems "Diving into the Wreck" in 1974, when she read a statement written by herself and fellow nominees Alice Walker and Audre Lorde, "refusing the terms of patriarchal competition and declaring that we will share this prize among us, to be used as best we can for women." In 2004, she won the National Book Critics Circle Award for her collection "The School Among the Ruins." According to her publisher, WW Norton, her books have sold between 750000 and 800000 copies, a high amount for a poet. She gained national prominence with her third poetry collection, "Snapshots of a Daughter-in-Law," in 1963. Citing the title poem, University of Maryland professor Rudd Fleming wrote in The Washington Post that Rich "proves poetically how hard it is to be a woman — a member of the second sex." She was, like so many, profoundly changed by the 1960s. Rich married ...

'song' - adrienne rich
You're wondering if I'm lonely: OK then, yes, I'm lonely as a plane rides lonely and level on its radio beam, aiming across the Rockies for the blue-strung aisles of an airfield on the ocean. You want to ask, am I lonely? Well, of course, lonely as a woman driving across country day after day, leaving behind mile after mile little towns she might have stopped and lived and died in, lonely If I'm lonely it must be the loneliness of waking first, of breathing dawns' first cold breath on the city of being the one awake in a house wrapped in sleep If I'm lonely it's with the rowboat ice-fast on the shore in the last red light of the year that knows what it is, that knows it's neither ice nor mud nor winter light but wood, with a gift for burning
