Lokon-Empung is a twin volcano lying on the rim of the Tondano Caldera in northern Sulawesi, Indonesia. In addition to Lokon-Empung, the volcanoes Mahawu, Sopotan and Sempu are located along the perimeter of the 20x30 km wide caldera which was formed by a massive eruption in the Late Miocene or Early Pliocene period. Nested within Tondano lies the more recent 3.5x5 km Pangolombian caldera and several subsequently formed volcanic edifices. The North Sulawesi-Sangihe Islands magmatic arc which encompasses the volcanoes around Tondano, including Lokon-Empung, is related to subduction of oceanic crust of the Molucca plate in a westward direction (thus sliding under Northern Sulawesi). The nearby Halmahera arc is associated with eastward subduction of the Molucca plate. The Molucca Sea Collision Zone is a presently unique example of the beginning of the orthogonal collision of two active subduction zones. The Molucca Sea plate lies between the two subduction systems and has been progressively subducted under the westward moving Halmahera Plate as well as the eastward moving Sangihe Plate, since about 7-17 and 25 million years ago, respectively. Whilst the subduction zones have yet to meet, the oceanic lithosphere of the Molucca Sea plate is no longer found at the surface but has been buried by about 20 km thick sedimentary formations being pushed infront of the two systems and referred to as the collision complex. Under this complex, the Molucca Plate is gradually sinking into the earths mantle. The Sangihe Plate is gradually starting to override the Halmahera forearc and eventually as the systems meet the Halmahera Plate will start to be subducted. The process is described in detail and related to the volcanic activity in the arcs in e.g. Clor et al. 2005 (Geochem. Geophys. Geosyst. 6(3), pp1-20), Elburg and Foden, 1998 (Earth Plan. Sci. Lett. 163, p.381-398), and MacPherson et al. 2003 (Geol. Soc. London, Special Publ. 219, p.207-220). The active crater of the Lokon-Empung complex, Kawah Tompaluan (1140m), lies on the saddle connecting Lokon and Empung volcanoes. No historical activity has been documented at Lokon (1579m), whilst moderate explosive eruptions occurred at Empung (1340m) around 1375 and 1775 (exact dates not known). Activity has since only been observed at Kawah Tompaluan. The first eruption at Tompaluan was recorded in 1829, with further eruptions in 1893-94, 1930, 1942, 1949, 1951-53, 1958-59, 1962-66, 1969-71, 1973-80, 1984, 1986-88, 1991-92, 2000-2003 and 2011-2012 (list last updated 2012). The 1991 eruptive phase produced particularly powerful eruptions. On 19. September, volcanic bombs falling in a radius of 500m of the crater set fire to nearby plantations. On 24-25 October significant ash emission occurred, sometimes associated with short pyroclastic flows. Up to one meter of ash fell around the crater and 2.5 cm in Kinilow, 4 km east of Tompaluan. About 10000 people were evacuated, particularly from Kinilow, about 3 square km of clove tree and coconut plantations were damaged, as well as nearly 1900 buildings (although presumably not badly). The eruption accounted for one fatality, a swiss volcanologist, who ventured too close to the crater on 24 October and was sadly killed by volcanic bombs before being buried in ash. Manado airport was closed due to volcanic ash for several days. The data in this text is largely derived from the Smithsonian GVP, as only few publications on Lokon exist. The documented activity was from 05.12-10.12, 2012. A week beforehand eruptions were occuring almost daily although activity was approximately at 3-day intervals at the time of the visit. Lokon-Empung volcanic complex lies in northern Sulawesi, about an hours drive from Manado airport. The volcano is best viewed from the resort town of Kinilow, which lies close to the city of Tomohon. The Highland Resort hotel offers a good view of the volcano and friendly staff. The crater zone is extremely hazardous during eruptive phases and is off limits to visitors. When activity is low, guides are available to take visitors on the about 1 hour climb to the crater rim. The KKVO Volcano Observatory on the outskirts of Kinilow. The observatory is responsible not only for Lokon-Empung and nearby Mahawu (see images below), but also for monitoring a number of other volcanoes in northern Sulawesi, including Soputan and several volcanoes on islands extending off the northern coast. The staff are friendly and will show interested visitors the monitoring equipment. Information panels showing the monitored volcanoes are also available.
Indonesia quake triggers brief tsunami alert- 15-11-2014 Brief tsunami warnings have been lifted after a 7.3-magnitude earthquake under the Molucca Sea in eastern Indonesia. The earthquake struck at a depth of 46km (28 miles) northwest of Kota Ternate in the Maluku islands, according to the US Geological Survey. A 9 cm (3.5 inch) wave reached the island of Jailolo but caused no damage, according to Indonesia's meteorological agency. There were no immediate reports of casualties. Shortly after the first quake, another measuring 6.2 was monitored off the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, the US Geological Survey said. Indonesia lies on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" plate boundaries, and is prone to frequent earthquakes. On Boxing Day in 2004, a 9.1-magnitude earthquake off the coast of Banda Aceh triggered a tsunami that killed more than 230,000 people, the majority in Indonesia.

The quake struck at a depth of 41 kilometres (25 miles), 134 kilometres northwest of Kota Ternate at 0342 IST yesterday, the USGS said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat. Hendra Rahman, an official from Indonesia's meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency, said the quake was felt moderately in Manado, on Sulawesi island, and on the island of Ternate. But he added there had been no reports of damage. Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates collide, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity. A huge undersea quake in 2004 triggered a tsunami that killed more than 170,000 people in Aceh province, on western Sumatra island, and tens of thousands more in other countries with coasts on the Indian Ocean. The Sangihe Islands (also spelled "Sangir", "Sanghir" or "Sangi") – Indonesian: Kepulauan Sangihe – are a group of islands which constitute two regencies within the province of North Sulawesi, in northern Indonesia, the Sangihe Islands Regency (Kabupaten Kepulauan Sangihe) and the Sitaro Islands Regency (Kabupaten Siau Tagulandang Biaro). They are located northeast of Sulawesi between the Celebes Sea and the Molucca Sea, roughly halfway between Sulawesi and Mindanao, in the Philippines; the Sangihes form the eastern limit of the Celebes Sea.[1] The islands combine to total 813 sq kilometers, with many of the islands being actively volcanic with fertile soil and mountains. The main islands of the group are, north to south, Sangir Besar (or Sangir Island), Siau (or Siao), Tahulandang, and Biaro. The largest island is Sangir Besar and contains an active volcano, Mount Awu (1320 metres). Tahuna is the chief town and port, also hosting the islands' sole airport, Naha Airport. The area came under Dutch control in 1677, and became part of Indonesia when it declared independence from the Netherlands in 1945. The Sangir language is spoken in the islands; this Austronesian language is also spoken in some islands in the Philippines, and on the extreme northern tip of Sulawesi.[2] The Sangihe tectonic plate is named after the island arc and is very active. The population for these island groups was 189,676 at the 2010 Census, comprising 126,133 in the Sangihe Islands Regency and 63,543 in the Sitaro Islands Regency. In 2007, Sitaro (Siau island, Tagulandang island and Biaro island) became a new regency by dispart with Sangihe island. In 2014, a first media, in form of newspaper is brought from several young people that have a clean integrity to build Sangihe Region. [3] (source : wikipedia.org)

A strong undersea earthquake has hit Indonesia, but damage was limited and no casualties have been reported. The 7.1 quake was recorded off the Molucca islands and strongly felt in several cities. It caused some power cuts in Manado but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii says there is no risk of hazardous tsunamis in the aftermath of the quake. Indonesia is located inside the so-called “Pacific Ring of FIre”, a seismically active zone where different plates of the earth’s crust meet and create a large number of earthquakes and volcanoes.

The Tangshan earthquake, also known as the Great Tangshan earthquake, was a natural disaster that occurred on Wednesday, July 28, 1976. It is believed to be the largest earthquake of the 20th century by death toll. The epicenter of the earthquake was near Tangshan in Hebei, People's Republic of China, an industrial city with approximately one million inhabitants. The number of deaths initially reported by the Chinese government was 655,000, but this number has since been stated to be around 240,000 to 255,000.Another report indicates that the actual death toll was much higher, at approximately 650,000, and explains that the lower estimates are limited to Tangshan and exclude fatalities in the densely populated surrounding areas. A further 164,000 people were recorded as being severely injured. The earthquake occurred between a series of political events involving the Communist Party of China, ultimately leading to the expulsion of the ruling Gang of Four by Mao's chosen successor, Hua Guofeng. In traditional Chinese thought, natural disasters are seen as a precursor of dynastic change. The earthquake hit in the early morning, at 03:42:53.8 local time (1976 July 27 19:42:53.8 UTC), and lasted 14 to 16 seconds.Chinese government official sources state a magnitude of 7.8 on the Richter magnitude scale, though some sources listed it as high as 8.2. It was followed by a major 7.1 magnitude aftershock some 16 hours later, increasing the death toll to over 255,000. The earthquake was generated by the 25-mile-long Tangshan Fault, which runs near the city and ruptured due to tectonic forces caused by the Amurian Plate sliding past the Eurasian Plate.

One of two British explorer ships that disappeared in the Arctic nearly 170 years ago has been found, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced Tuesday. The HMS Erebus and HMS Terror were last seen in the 1840s. Canada announced in 2008 that it would search for the ships led by British Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin. Harper, speaking in Ottawa, said it remains unclear which ship has been found, but images show there's enough information to confirm it's one of the pair. http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/3d281c11a96b4ad082fe88aa0db04305/Article_2014-09-09-CN--Canada-Arctic%20Ship%20Found/id-ed50002b3be24c0d96514cca80fbb524 http://www.wochit.com

The tremor was followed by a series of aftershocks that measured between magnitude 4.3 and 5.8, In northern Sulawesi's Gorontalo city, college students ran out of their university building after feeling the strong jolt which was measured at a depth of 47 kilometres, with epicenter 134 kilometres northwest of Ternate, an island in Maluku. ----- A powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake rocked the Maluku Islands in eastern Indonesia Saturday, sparking a tsunami warning and causing panicked people to flee their homes. Small waves generated by the undersea quake were detected in several parts of the sprawling archipelago, local authorities said, although there were no reports of casualties or major damage and the tsunami warning was lifted after a short while. Nevertheless, the prospect of a major tsunami set nerves on edge in one of the most seismically active countries in the world, almost a decade after quake-triggered destructive waves devastated western Aceh province. The Molucca Sea (Indonesian: Laut Maluku) is located in the western Pacific Ocean, within the country of Indonesia. The region is rich in coral and has many diving sites.
The Molucca Sea borders the Banda Sea to the south and the Celebes Sea to the north.
The islands bordering the Molucca Sea include Halmahera to the north east, Buru and Ceram in the centre, and Sulawesi to the west. The Talaud Islands to the north are the general limit of the sea, though the Molucca Sea Plate, the tectonic plate named after the sea, extends further north.
The International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) defines the "Molukka Sea" [sic] as being one of the waters of the East Indian Archipelago. The IHO defines its limits as follows:
On the North. By a line from the Northeast extreme of Celebes [Sulawesi] through the Siau Islands to the South point of Sangi (3°21′N 125°37′E / 3.35°N 125.617°E / 3.35; 125.617) thence to the Southern extreme of the Talaud Group, through these islands to their Northeastern extreme (4°29′N 126°52′E / 4.483°N 126.867°E / 4.483; 126.867) and thence a line to Tanjong Sopi, the Northern point of Morotai Island.
