Nelson Dewey State Park
Nelson Dewey State Park is a land of incredible vistas overlooking the Mississippi River valley. On the site is the home of Wisconsin's first governor, Nelson Dewey. His 2000 acre plantation was considered the state's first large scale farming operation. The governor's first home was gutted by fire in 1873. The current building was built on the original foundation. Across the road, the State Historical Society operates Stonefield Village and the State Farm Museum. There are a number of effigy mounds constructed by the Hopewell Indian group along the bluff trails and overlooks in the 750 acre park. The trail through the dry lime prairie restoration along the edge of the overlook is very scenic. Tent campers will be impressed with the four walk-in sites overlooking the Mississippi River valley. Alliant Energy's proposed 300 megawatt coal burning power plant in Cassville WI It seems as if Wisconsin's electric utilities are racing to build new coal-burning power plants or retrofit their existing bygone-era dinosaurs before new carbon emission regulations penalize the foolishness of such endeavor. This is not a good faith effort by our public utilities who mislead us into thinking that they are leading Wisconsin in the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable future. In Wisconsin, more than 70% of the electricity is produced by burning coal. Coal is abundant, and coal is cheap. But it is cheap only if the environmental and societal impacts are disregarded. New economy rally calls for support of new flexible fuels
New economy rally calls for support of new flexible fuels plant, jobs and affordable electricity Cassville proposal represents the largest bio-fuels project to date in Wisconsin MADISON, WI September 10, 2008 Supporters of a proposed power plant in Cassville took their fight to the capitol city calling the 300 megawatt flexible fuels project a giant step forward in building a new, green economy in Wisconsin. Representatives from the states farming community, organized labor, conservation groups, economic development community, and bio-fuels industry joined Alliant Energy in calling for approval of the expansion of the Nelson Dewey Generating Station by state regulators. This is a tremendous opportunity for the state to meet the governors objectives for increased use of bio-fuels, reduced emissions and economic development, said Barbara Swan, President of Wisconsin Power & Light, an Alliant Energy company. Events began at the State Capitol at noon when four semi-trucks loaded with switchgrass, one of the bio-fuels proposed to be used at the Nelson Dewey 3 plant, circled the state house. Each truck carried enough switchgrass (36 bales) to power 800 homes for a full day. The Cassville project and the burning of renewable fuels will help Wisconsin reduce greenhouse gas emissions and begin down the road to reducing our reliance on coal, said Brett Hulsey, President and Founder of Better Environmental Solutions and former Senior Midwest Representative of the Sierra Club. Enrolling in the CCC and living at camp.
It has been demonstrated that young men can be put to work in our forests, parks, and fields, on projects which can benefit both the nations youth and conservation -- April 17, 1936 Franklin D. Roosevelt. 1933 saw the beginning of the Civilian Conservation Corps(CCC) and the Works Progress Administration(WPA). The youthful labor left behind by these groups, are visible today. During this time, the Wyalusing State Park was known as Nelson Dewey State Park.
