Triumph (1924 film)

Triumph is a 1924 American silent drama film directed by Cecil B. DeMille.

DeMille fell out with Adolph Zukor, one of the heads of Famous Players-Lasky, over the costs of The Ten Commandments. He completed Triumph and Feet of Clay before he departed Paramount to lead his own production company Producers Distributing Corporation(PDC). He returned to Paramount only after the introduction of sound in the early 30s.

Prints of the film are held at George Eastman House and the Library of Congress.

Lubrication theory

In fluid dynamics, lubrication theory describes the flow of fluids (liquids or gases) in a geometry in which one dimension is significantly smaller than the others. An example is the flow above air hockey tables, where the thickness of the air layer beneath the puck is much smaller than the dimensions of the puck itself.

Internal flows are those where the fluid is fully bounded. Internal flow lubrication theory has many industrial applications because of its role in the design of fluid bearings. Here a key goal of lubrication theory is to determine the pressure distribution in the fluid volume, and hence the forces on the bearing components. The working fluid in this case is often termed a lubricant.

Free film lubrication theory is concerned with the case in which one of the surfaces containing the fluid is a free surface. In that case the position of the free surface is itself unknown, and one goal of lubrication theory is then to determine this. Surface tension may then be significant, or even dominant. Issues of wetting and dewetting then arise. For very thin films (thickness less than one micrometre), additional intermolecular forces, such as Van der Waals forces or disjoining forces, may become significant.

Triumph (sternwheeler)

Triumph was a sternwheel steamboat that ran on the Nooksack River in Whatcom County, Washington in the 1890s.

Career

Triumph is reported to have been built by Capt. Simon P. Randolph (d.1909 at Seattle), either 1889 at Lynden, WA or in 1892 at Whatcom. Randolph, who received his master's license in 1871, had been the first man to operate a steamboat on Lake Washington, had commanded or owned a number of smaller sternwheelers over his career including Fannie, Old Settler, Comet, and the Edith R. His son, Capt. Preston Brooks Randolph (1860-1939), was also involved in ownership and management of the later boats, including Triumph.

Triumph was served on the Nooksack River, which the Randolphs had developed as a steamboat route. In 1897, Triumph was destroyed by fire near the town of Marietta, WA, in Whatcom County.

Triumph 15/50

The Triumph Fifteen saloon, or 15/50, was produced by the British Triumph Motor Company between 1926 and 1930. The car used a 2169cc four cylinder Flathead engine, and was along with the smaller engined Triumph 13/35 the first British car to be fitted with four wheel hydraulic brakes, provided by Lockheed Wagner. The brakes were imported from the USA, with the axles, and have since proven powerful but ultimately problematic. A three speed transmission was used with centrally located gear lever . The suspension was by semi elliptic leaf springs on all wheels.

The '15' was an export success for Triumph, and c.2,000 were produced during the period, with various body styles coachbuilt. Export markets included Australia and New Zealand.

As of 2012, there are only two known examples left in existence and both have been owned by the same person since 1959.
