MOMENT Massive Transformer Explosion at a Con Edison Power Plant in NY
New York faces the prospect of being without power for a week today after Superstorm Sandy caused mass blackouts and triggered a series of explosions. In total, more than six million Americans across the Eastern Seaboard have been affected after the devastation wreaked by Superstorm Sandy caused power cuts on an unprecedented scale. In New York City alone, more than 250000 residents are without power after an explosion at a Manhattan power plant. Around 50000 power outages in downtown Manhattan in Battery Park and the Financial District were part of a planned cut and will take around three days to restore, but much of the damage was caused by the explosion at the 14th street power station and will take up to a week to repair. A company statement said: 'Con Edison is reporting power outages to a large section of Manhattan stretching from East 39th Street to the lower tip of Manhattan. 'The outage was caused by flooding in company substations and engineers are working to correct the problem. 'Restoring electrical service to underground equipment demands cleaning all components of sea water, drying and testing to make it safe to restore power.' In addition to the flood waters, heavy winds have downed power lines across the region. 'This will be one for the record books,' said John Miksad, senior vice president for electric operation at Con Edison. 'This will be the largest storm-related outage in our history.' The previous record was more than 200000 customers affected by ...

Hurricane Sandy Transformer Explosion at NY Power Plant
MANHATTAN — A massive explosion rocked a Con Edison plant near East 14th Street and the FDR on Monday evening as Hurricane Sandy continued to batter New York City. Area residents shared photos and video footage of the explosion, which plunged much of the neighborhood into darkness, via social media websites shortly after it happened. A New York camera operator has filmed a transformer erupting in a huge ball of blue light in downtown Manhattan after Hurricane Sandy made landfall. Shot from across the East River in Brooklyn, the video posted online shows a series of bright blue flashes illuminating the sky from explosions at the Con Ed (Consolidated Edison) power plant. Con Ed has announced that it has already shut off power to customers to part of Lower Manhattan so it can be restored faster after the storm passes. Much of Manhattan is now without power, with millions of homes elsewhere also facing blackouts. Water levels are now at record highs in the city, with the Fire Department of New York headquarters evacuated by boat. The sea surged a record of nearly four metres at the foot of Manhattan.

SHOCKING Explosion Flashes Across New York from Con Edison Plant Caught on Tape
A New York camera operator has filmed a transformer erupting in a huge ball of blue light in downtown Manhattan after Hurricane Sandy made landfall. Shot from across the East River in Brooklyn, the video posted online shows a series of bright flashes illuminating the sky from explosions at the Con Ed (Consolidated Edison) power plant. An Australian living in Brooklyn told ninemsn she saw a series of blue flashes before hearing a whooshing sound. "My heart dropped into my stomach and for a few seconds I thought we were all going to die," she said. "Then I doubted what I saw because it seemed too crazy." Con Ed has announced that it has already shut off power to customers to part of Lower Manhattan so it can be restored faster after the storm passes. Much of Manhattan is now without power, with millions of homes elsewhere also facing blackouts. Water levels are now at record highs in the city, with the Fire Department of New York headquarters evacuated by boat. The sea surged a record of nearly four metres at the foot of Manhattan. Authorities worried that seawater would seep into the New York subway and cripple it, along with the electrical and communications systems that are vital to the nation's financial centre. The saltwater has the capacity to spark dangerous fires and manhole explosions, the Wall Street Journal reports. At least 12 people have been reported dead in the US, while Canadian police have said a woman was killed by flying debris in Toronto. news.ninemsn.com.au

Hurricane Sandy 14th Street Con Edison command center Power Station Massive Explosion (Raw Video)
Hurricane Sandy 14th Street Power Station Massive Explosion (Raw Video) massive explosion at 14th Street in the East Village, shortly before power was lost throughout much of lower Manhattan. A power failure struck the Con Edison command center near Union Square around 8pm, according to the Wall Street Journal, following a substation failure that is reportedly responsible for loss of power in Greenwich Village and Lower Manhattan. There had been reports of 19 Con Ed workers trapped at a power station in Manhattan, but Con Ed has since dispelled those reports as rumor. Con Ed had preemptively cut power to residents south of the Brooklyn Bridge to protect underground equipment from water damage, in a move described as unprecedented. Many New Yorkers south of 36th Street received warning calls from the power company earlier in the day. TWU Local 100 Supports Locked-Out Con Ed Workers
A TWU Local 100 contingent joined hundreds of chanting Utility Workers Union Local 1-2 members who have been locked out of their electrical service and repair jobs at Con Edison. The 8500 workers were negotiating for a new contract this past Saturday night when management pulled the plug on the talks and told the union members not to report to work, and that managers would be handling repairs and system maintenance in the interim. The talks broke down because Con Ed management wants health care givebacks, pay freezes, and to convert defined benefit pensions to 401 (k) accounts. The Union wants decent raises -- and points to Con Ed CEO Kevin Burke's $11 million salary and the company's profitability (the company reported a profit of $280 million last quarter, according to Dow Jones) -- as the main reason why its demands should be met. On Tuesday morning TWU Local 100 Director of Organizing Charles Jenkins told Con Ed workers that transit workers have committed ourselves to the fight to help them win a decent contract. You can sign the NYS AFL-CIO's pledge and leave a statement of support for Con Ed workers here: nysaflcio.org

In OTHER Con Edison strike/lockout related news....
That banging/knocking you hear is actually the wires shorting out.. Here we are at 108 ST. Apparently due to the wires overheating and then eventually shorting out, a fire erupted near the underground substation. At first i thought a car was on fire until i saw the smoke was coming out of the vents. I don't realize it was the substation (thought the building's basement was on fire) until later in the video. Parts of the block has been left without power, including the buildings behind me. Earlier, a tree knocked down a power line, during the downpour earlier, causing my bus to be delayed for nearly an hour.

Con Ed Brings In Out-of-State Workers: Union Cites Extreme Provocation
NEW YORK, July 2, 2012 (updated July 6 & July 9, see below)--In a clear instance of 1% hauteur, Con ED CEO Kevin Burke locked out 8500 members of Local 1-2, Utility Workers Union of America when contract negotiations broke down ten days ago over pensions , sick leave, raises, and a 7-day advance notice for strikes--at the onset of a heat wave that threatened to put a strain on the grid and shortly before a national holiday. Sticking points: Con Ed wants to change the kind of pension benefits that union workers get from a fixed benefit based on a portion of their salaries to a (401K) type of benefit. UPDATE july 25 Memo from Public Service Commission www.docstoc.com Filmed by Liza Béar at Irving Place and East 14th Street, Manhattan, With the union's 4-year contract due for renewal on July 1, the lock-out is now in its second week. In a new development today, July 9, John Melia , spokesman for Local 1-2 UWUA, told this reporter that "Now we have out-of-state scabs arriving, and that's extremely provocative, to say the least. The workers are from Virginia and Alabama and they're showing up with their own rigs from out-of-state,. That's strike-breaking in the extreme. It's provoking types of reactions one hasn't seen since the 1930s practically. I mean, they're on a dangerous course." Asked what expectations the union had for the contract negotiations due to resume tomorrow, Melia said the union hadn't heard from the company yet. "Let's hope they show up tomorrow and want to ...
