"The Surprise" - 16mm Film Shoot (Behind The Scenes)
My first project in my Production 1 class this semester was to shoot a short film using a 16mm Bolex film camera. I was given 100 feet of film, roughly 2 minutes and 45 seconds, and a list of camera angles that had to be included. The story could be anything I wanted. Shooting on a film camera is such a tedious and time consuming process, requiring exact measurements of light, distance, focus, and everything else that would only take seconds to set working with a digital camera. It took around 7 hours total to shoot the entire length of film. As of uploading this video, I have no idea how any of the footage turned out. When I get it back in a couple of weeks, I will edit and upload the final product. The entire thing may be completely messed up, but I guess that's part of the learning process.

16mm Film Project PickPocket
This is our 16mm film project which is a group project. It's the very first time we actually use FILM to shoot a film, pretty special expereience. However, because of the length limitation of our film stock, there may have some small shots missing. Anyway, overall I'm pleased about this final output.

Payback (16mm movie)
This was my cinematography 150 assignment. We had to shoot on 16mm and make a 100ft silent movie. (Music and sound added later) I shot on Kodak Tri-X Reversal. It gave me a great contrast and grainy look which is what I wanted. Although the highest ASA was 160T and I was indoors using available light (part of the assign. requirments). I pushed the film one stop but it came back far more underexposed than I wanted. But I suppose it adds to the interesting black and white feel :) This was my first ever "movie" I ever shot on 16mm and edited on the flatbed! I hope to do more. Can you guess what two old classic films the music is from??? *fun fact: Most of the film turned out underexposed and I was only able to edit together what film I could see. So even though it's not the "intended" story, I think it works :) Enjoy

Guard Duty 1971 Fort Ord California 16mm film transfer ♪
1971 FORT ORD CALIFORNIA In 1971 Fort Ord, near Monterey California, was teaming with GIs. I was assigned to the Motion Picture Section of the Combat Developers Command Experimentation Command United States Army as a Motion Picture Photographer (84C20). The Lieutenant in charge of the the film department was a graduate from USC in film. Glenn gave us lessons and assignments using the 16mm cameras. We learned how to use the cameras, how to put a story together and the finer points of film making. I ordered films from external sources. They came to our door via UPS. Raoul was our expert projectionist and he could thread a projector faster than a soldier could lock and load an M16 rifle. We watched the films. The Lieutenant would reverse the projector to review scenes and explain to us the different techniques in editing and timing used in films and cinema arts. Larry was the soldier that kept the cameras and accessories in top notch combat ready condition. He was also an American Indian. One couldn't mistake Larry. He had a distinctive look and his Chevy had a large horse head portrait on both the driver and passenger doors. The men in our unit were exceptional. Each had characteristics that made them individuals. They were friendly and bright. They all brought with them to our lives and to the US Army part of their family they left behind in their hometowns. This film was one of our assignments. It was practice in the use of the camera, exposure, continuity, camera angles ...

Kramme & Zeuthen 16mm film projector in action!
A danish "Kramme & Zeuthen" projector in action. The projector is designed to work at both AC and DC, with voltages ranges from 110V to 220V Even though: The Power Supply is very simple: 115V/500W light bulb and a huge air-cooled drop-down resistor! We are using 230V AC here in Denmark, so the way of halfing the voltage", doesn't make much sence today With my new/modern 230V halogen bulb and homemade rebuild of the optical sound. The projector came alive again!
