Run batted in or RBI is a statistic used in baseball and softball to credit a batter when the outcome of his at-bat results in a run being scored, except in certain situations such as when an error is made on the play. The first team to track RBI was the Buffalo Bisons.

Common nicknames for an RBI include "Ribby" and "Rib."

The plural of RBI is "RBIs". A common mistake is to conclude that the plural should be "RBI" because "runs" is the pluralized noun, but the entire acronym is properly pluralized.^[1]

Major League Baseball Rules[link]

The official rulebook of Major League Baseball states in Rule 10.04:

(a) The official scorer shall credit the batter with a run batted in for every run that scores:

(1) unaided by an error and as part of a play begun by the batter's safe hit (including the batter's home run), sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly, infield out or fielder's choice, unless Rule 10.04(b) applies;

(2) by reason of the batter becoming a runner with the bases full (because of a base on balls, an award of first base for being touched by a pitched ball or for interference or obstruction); or

(3) when, before two are out, an error is made on a play on which a runner from third base ordinarily would score.

(b) The official scorer shall not credit a run batted in

(1) option when the batter grounds into a force double play or a reverse-force double play; or

(2) when a fielder is charged with an error because the fielder muffs a throw at first base that would have completed a force double play.

(c) The official scorer's judgment must determine whether a run batted in shall be credited for a run that scores when a fielder holds the ball or throws to a wrong base. Ordinarily, if the runner keeps going, the official scorer should credit a run batted in; if the runner stops and takes off again when the runner notices the misplay, the official scorer should credit the run as scored on a fielder's choice.

Criticism[link]

The perceived significance of the RBI is displayed by the fact that it is one of the three categories that compose the triple crown. In addition, career RBI are often cited in debates over who should be elected to the Hall of Fame. However, critics, particularly within the field of sabermetrics, argue that RBI measures the quality of the lineup more than it does the player himself since an RBI can only be credited to a player if one or more batters preceding him in the batting order reached base (the exception to this being a solo home run, in which the batter is credited with driving himself in).^[2][3] This implies that better offensive teams—and therefore, the teams in which the most players get on base—tend to produce hitters with higher RBI totals than equivalent hitters on lesser-hitting team.^[4]

Bimal Jalan (born 1941) is a former Governor of India's Reserve Bank and a nominated member of the Upper House of India's Parliament, the Rajya Sabha during 2003-2009.^[1]

Education and career[link]

Jalan graduated from Presidency College, Calcutta, and later was at Cambridge and Oxford.

A leading economic bureaucrat, Jalan held several administrative and advisory positions in the Government of India. He was the Chief Economic Adviser in the 1980s, Banking Secretary between 1985 and 1989 and Finance Secretary, Ministry of Finance. As Finance Secretary, he was also on the Central Board of Directors of the Reserve Bank of India. He has also been the Chairman of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister between January 1991 and September 1992. Jalan has served as the Executive Director representing India on the Boards of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. At the time of his appointment as the Governor of the Reserve Bank, Jalan was the Member-Secretary, Planning Commission in New Delhi.

He was the Governor of Reserve Bank of India for two terms. The Government of India reappointed Jalan as Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, first for a period of two years commencing November 22, 2000 to November 21, 2002 and again for a further period of two years commencing from November 22, 2002 and ending November 21, 2004. He was succeeded by Y. Venugopal Reddy on September 6, 2003.^[2] During his tenure the Indian Rupee note of 1000 denomination was introduced.^[3]

Subir Vithal Gokarn,(born October 3, 1959) is one of the four Deputy Governors of the Reserve Bank of India (equivalent of U.S. Federal Reserve)along with Anand Sinha, K C Chakrabarty and H.R.Khan.^[1]

Appointed by the Government Of India on November 19, 2009 for a three year term ^[2] beginning November 24, 2009,^[3] he succeeded Rakesh Mohan^[4] after the latter took up an assignment for six months and joined the Stanford Center for International Development at Stanford University, US.^[5]

Prominent economists like Jahangir Aziz (Chief Economist, JP Morgan) and Dr.Arvind Virmani ( Senior Economic Advisor -Ministry of Finance (India)) were also considered for the post that was eventually handed to Dr.Gokarn after a decision by a search panel headed by Duvvuri Subbarao and comprising Janki Ballabh (former SBI Chairman) and Vepa Kamesam (former Deputy Governor- RBI).^[6]

Prior to his appointment as the Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Dr.Gokarn was the Chief Economist of global rating agency Standard and Poor's (S&P ) Asia-Pacific since August 2007.^[7] He is the head of CRISIL's Research and Information business ^[8] and also a nominee Board Member of the State Bank Of India.^[9]

Appointed at the age of 49, Dr.Gokarn is one of the youngest Deputy Governors of RBI in its 76 year history and will supervise the Monetary Policy Department,Department of Statistics and Information Management, Department of Economic Analysis and Policy,Credit Guarantee Corporation, Department of Communication and Deposit Insurance and also represent the Reserve Bank at the G-20 Deputies’ forum.^[10]

Dr.Gokarn completed his B.A in Economics (Hons.) from St Xavier’s College, Mumbai, M.A in Economics (Hons.) from Delhi School of Economics and pursued his Ph.D in Economics from Case Western Reserve University of Cleveland, Ohio.^[11] He is a Fulbright Scholar ^[12] and spent an academic year at the Economic Growth centre at Yale University,USA on a Fulbright Research Fellowship which he was awarded in 1997.

Dr.Gokarn has previously held the position of Associate Professor at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research(IGIDR) in Mumbai and then the Chief Economist and Industrial Finance Corporation of India (IFCI) Chair at the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) in New Delhi ^[13] prior to his move to CRISIL. He was the Chief Economist, Centre for Economic Research and Executive Director of CRISIL Ltd. till August 2007 and then served as the Chief Economist at Standard and Poor's (S &P) Asia Pacific (which acquired a majority stake in CRISIL in 2005) ^[14] till his appointment in the RBI in 2009 and has been a Member on the Boards of organisations like Global Data Services of India Ltd, EconoMatters Ltd and CRISIL MarketWire Ltd.^[15] He has also served as the former Chairperson of the Economic Affairs Committee of the ASSOCHAM.^[16]
