Afghanistan
Afghanistan ⁱ/æfˈɡænɨstæn/ (Persian/Pashto: افغانستان, Afġānistān), officially the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, is a landlocked country located in the centre of Asia, forming part of South Asia, Central Asia, and Greater Middle East, it is also considered to be part of a broader West Asia. With a population of about 29 million, it has an area of 647,500 km² (250,001 sq mi), making it the 42nd most populous and 41st largest nation in the world. It is bordered by Pakistan in the south and the east, Iran in the west, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan in the north, and China in the far northeast.
Afghanistan has been an ancient focal point of the Silk Road and human migration. Archaeologists have found evidence of human habitation from as far back as 50,000 BC. Urban civilization may have begun in the area as early as 3,000 to 2,000 BC. Sitting at an important geostrategic location that connects the Middle East with Central Asia and the Indian subcontinent, the land has been home to various peoples through the ages and witnessed many military campaigns, notably by Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and in modern era Western forces. The land also served as a source from which the Greco-Bactrians, Kushans, Saffarids, Ghaznavids, Ghorids, Timurids, Mughals and many others have risen to form major empires.

Azad Kashmir
Azad Jammu and Kashmir (Urdu: آزاد جموں و کشمیر, Azaad Jammu o- Kashmir, literally Free Jammu and Kashmir ; AJK) or Azad Kashmir (literally Free Kashmir) for short, is the southernmost political entity within the Pakistani-administered part of the former princely state of Kashmir and Jammu. It borders the present-day Indian-controlled state of Jammu and Kashmir to the east (separated from it by the Line of Control), Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa to the west, Gilgit–Baltistan to the north, and the Punjab province to the south. With its capital at Muzaffarabad, Azad Kashmir covers an area of 13,297 square kilometres (5,134 sq mi) and has an estimated population of about four million. Azad Kashmir and Gilgit–Baltistan together constitute the disputed region, referred to as Pakistan-administered Kashmir by the United Nations and other international organisations, and as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in India in contrast to the name Indian-occupied Kashmir which is given to the Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir by Pakistan. The territories have been under control of the two countries since the first Kashmir war after which Azad Kashmir was successfully captured from the princely state by the rebelling militias with the help of Pakistan army.

Boston
Boston (pronounced /ˈbɒstən/ or locally /ˈbɔstən/ ( listen)) is the capital of and largest city in Massachusetts, and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. The largest city in New England, Boston is regarded as the unofficial "Capital of New England" for its economic and cultural impact on the entire New England region. The city proper, covering only 48.43 square miles, had a population of 617,594 according to the 2010 U.S. Census. Boston is also the anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area called Greater Boston, home to 4.5 million people and the tenth-largest metropolitan area in the country. Greater Boston as a commuting region is home to 7.6 million people, making it the fifth-largest Combined Statistical Area in the United States.
In 1630, Puritan colonists from England founded the city on the Shawmut Peninsula. During the late 18th century, Boston was the location of several major events during the American Revolution, including the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. Several early battles of the American Revolution, such as the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston, occurred within the city and surrounding areas. Through land reclamation and municipal annexation, Boston has expanded beyond the peninsula. After American independence was attained Boston became a major shipping port and manufacturing center, and its rich history now helps attract many tourists, with Faneuil Hall alone attracting over 20 million every year. The city was the site of several firsts, including America's first public school, Boston Latin School (1635), and the first subway system in the United States (1897).

Kashmir
Kashmir (Balti, Gojri, Poonchi/Chibhali, Dogri: कश्मीर; Kashmiri: कॅशीर, کٔشِیر; Ladakhi: ཀཤམིར; Uyghur: كەشمىر; Shina: کشمیر) is the northwestern region of the Indian subcontinent. Until the mid-19th century, the term Kashmir geographically denoted only the valley between the Great Himalayas and the Pir Panjal mountain range. Today Kashmir denotes a larger area that includes the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir (the Kashmir valley, Jammu and Ladakh), the Pakistani-administered Gilgit–Baltistan and the Azad Kashmir provinces, and the Chinese-administered regions of Aksai Chin and Trans-Karakoram Tract.
In the first half of the first millennium, the Kashmir region became an important center of Hinduism and later of Buddhism; later still, in the ninth century, Kashmir Shaivism arose. In 1349, Shah Mir became the first Muslim ruler of Kashmir and inaugurated the Salatin-i-Kashmir or Swati dynasty. For the next five centuries, Muslim monarchs ruled Kashmir, including the Mughals, who ruled from 1526 until 1751, then the Afghan Durrani Empire that ruled from 1747 until 1820. That year, the Sikhs under Ranjit Singh, annexed Kashmir. In 1846, upon the purchase of the region from the British under the Treaty of Amritsar, the Dogras—under Gulab Singh—became the new rulers. Dogra Rule, under the paramountcy (or tutelage) of the British Crown, lasted until 1947, when the former princely state became a disputed territory, now administered by three countries: India, Pakistan, and the People's Republic of China.

The territory of modern Pakistan was the site of several ancient cultures, including the Neolithic Mehrgarh and the Bronze Age Indus Valley Civilisation, and has undergone invasions or settlements by Hindu, Persian, Indo-Greek, Islamic, Turco-Mongol, Afghan and Sikh cultures. Thus the area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Indian Mauryan Empire, the Persian Achaemenid Empire, the Arab Umayyad Caliphate, the Mongol Empire, the Mughal Empire, the Durrani Empire, the Sikh Empire and the British Empire. As a result of the Pakistan Movement led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah and India's struggle for independence, Pakistan was created in 1947 as an independent nation for Muslims from the regions in the east and west of India where there was a Muslim majority. Initially a dominion, Pakistan adopted a new constitution in 1956, becoming an Islamic republic. A civil war in 1971 resulted in the secession of East Pakistan as the new country of Bangladesh.

September 11 attacks
The September 11 attacks (also referred to as September 11, September 11th or 9/11) were a series of four suicide attacks that were committed in the United States on September 11, 2001, coordinated to strike the areas of New York City and Washington, D.C. On that Tuesday morning, 19 terrorists from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger jets. The hijackers intentionally piloted two of those planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center complex in New York City; both towers collapsed within two hours. The hijackers also intentionally crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and intended to pilot the fourth hijacked jet, United Airlines Flight 93, into a target in Washington, D.C.; however, the plane crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after its passengers attempted to take control of the jet from the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks including the 227 civilians and 19 hijackers aboard the four planes, none of whom survived.

Tablighi Jamaat
Tablighi Jamaat (Urdu: تبلیغی جماعت, Arabic: جماعة التبليغ‎, Bengali: তাবলীগ জামাত, English: Society for spreading faith) is a religious movement which was founded in 1926 by Muhammad Ilyas al-Kandhlawi in India. The movement primarily aims at Tablighi spiritual reformation by working at the grass roots level, reaching out to Muslims across all social and economic spectra to bring them closer to Islam.
Tablighi Jamaat came forth as an offshoot of the Deobandi movement. Its inception is believed to be a response to Hindu reform movements, which were considered a threat to vulnerable and non-practicing Muslims. It gradually expanded from local to national to a transnational movement and now has followers in over 150 countries.
Tabligh Jamaat maintains a non-affiliating stature in matters of politics and fiqh (jurisprudence) so as to eschew the controversies that would otherwise accompany such affiliations. Although, Tabligh Jamaat emerged out of the Deobandi sub-school in the Hanafi fiqh, no particular interpretation of Islam has been endorsed since the beginning of the movement. Tabligh Jamaat has largely avoided electronic media and has emphasized a personal communication for proselytizing. The teachings of Tabligh Jamaat are mainly rudimentary and the Six Principles put forward by Muhammad Ilyas influence most of their teachings.

United States

Virginia
Virginia (ⁱ/vərˈdʒɪnjə/), officially the Commonwealth of Virginia, is a U.S. state located in the South Atlantic region of the United States. Virginia is nicknamed the "Old Dominion" and sometimes the "Mother of Presidents" after the eight U.S. presidents born there. The geography and climate of the Commonwealth are shaped by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Chesapeake Bay, which provide habitat for much of its flora and fauna. The area's history begins with several indigenous groups, including the Powhatan. In 1607 the London Company established the Colony of Virginia as the first permanent New World English colony. Slave labor and the land acquired from displaced Native American tribes each played a significant role in the colony's early politics and plantation economy. Virginia was one of the 13 Colonies in the American Revolution and joined the Confederacy in the American Civil War, during which Richmond was made the Confederate capital and Virginia's northwestern counties separated to form the state of West Virginia. Although the Commonwealth was under conservative single-party rule for nearly a century following Reconstruction, both major national parties are competitive in modern Virginia.

The Republic of Yemen (Arabic: الجمهورية اليمنية‎ al-Jumhūrīyah al-Yamanīyah), commonly known as Yemen ⁱ/ˈjɛmən/ (Arabic: اليَمَن‎ al-Yaman), is a country located in Western Asia, occupying the southwestern to southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, the Red Sea to the west, and Oman to the east. Yemen is considered one of the poorest countries in the Arab world. Its capital and largest city is Sana'a. Yemen's territory includes over 200 islands, the largest of which is Socotra, about 415 km (258 mi) to the south of mainland Yemen, off the coast of Somalia. It is the only state in the Arabian Peninsula to have a purely republican form of government. Approximately 53% of Yemenis are Sunnis, while 45% are Zaydi Shias.
One etymology derives Yemen from yamin, meaning "on the right side", as the south is on the right when facing the sunrise. Another derives Yemen from yumn, meaning "felicity", as the region is fertile. The Romans called it Arabia Felix (Happy Arabia) as opposed to Arabia Deserta (Deserted Arabia), which was their term for northern Arabia.

Aafia Siddiqui
Aafia Siddiqui (Urdu: عافیہ صدیقی; born March 2, 1972) is an American-educated Pakistani cognitive neuroscientist, related by marriage to terrorist-mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. Not long after the September 11 attacks, Dr. Siddiqui left the United States for Pakistan in 2002. After the capture of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in March 2003 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, by the Inter-Services Intelligence, he has stated he gave names of innocent people under torture to "please his captors" and Siddiqui’s lawyers believe her name was one of these.. After she was named by him, Siddiqui disappeared off the grid for five years. Siddiqui and her children's whereabouts and activities from March 2003 to July 2008 are a matter of dispute. She reappeared in Afghanistan under detention in 2008. Although authorities claimed she was found in possession of bomb-making instructions and materiel (including sodium cyanide) at the time of her arrest in Afghanistan, Dr. Siddiqui would come to be charged, tried and convicted in U.S. federal court not for terrorist-related activities, but instead for assault with intent to murder her U.S. interrogators in Afghanistan - charges that carried a maximum sentence of life in prison. Siddiqui was ultimately sentenced by a United States district court to 86 years in prison in a trial that critics have called "a grave miscarriage of justice".

Abdulrahman Farhane was a New York bookstore owner arrested in 2005 as part of a sweep against Americans accused of supporting terrorism.
He was convicted after he was asked by a government informant to donate money to help Islamic fighters purchase weapons to fight against American and other foreign governments in the Middle East.

Adam Yahiye Gadahn
Adam Yahiye Gadahn (Arabic: آدم يحيى غدن‎, Ādam Yaḥyā Ghadan; born Adam Pearlman, September 1, 1978) is an American who is a senior operative, cultural interpreter, spokesman and media advisor for the islamist group Al-Qaeda. Since 2004, he appeared in a number of videos produced by Al-Qaeda as "Azzam the American" ('Azzām al-Amrīki, عزام الأمريكي, sometimes transcribed as Ezzam Al-Amerikee). Gadahn converted to Islam in 1995, at the age of 17, at a California mosque and is described as a "homegrown," meaning that he has converted to an ideology so firmly that he is now willing to harm his country of origin. He is believed to have inspired the 2007 Osama bin Laden video.
In 2004, he was added to the FBI Seeking Information – War on Terrorism list. On October 11, 2006 he was removed from that list, and placed on the Bureau of Diplomatic Security Rewards for Justice Program list of wanted criminals. On the same day, Gadahn was indicted based on the testimony of the FBI case agent E.J. Hilbert II, in the Southern Division of the United States District Court for the Central District of California by a federal grand jury for the capital crime of treason for aiding an enemy of the United States (i.e. Al-Qaeda). Gadahn is the first American charged with treason since Tomoya Kawakita in 1952.

Ahmed Bilal
Ahmed Ibrahim Bilal was a member of a terrorist group dubbed the Portland Seven, some members of which attempted to travel to Afghanistan shortly after 9/11 in order to aid the Taliban. He was indicted and arrested in Malaysia in October of 2002. In 2003, he was sentenced to ten years on gun charges and for conspiracy to aid the Taliban in fighting the United States and coalition forces.
Patrice Lumumba Ford, Jeffrey Leon Battle, October Martinique Lewis (Battle's ex-wife), his brother Muhammad Ibrahim Bilal, Maher "Mike" Hawash, and Habis Abdulla al Saoub made up the original seven members wanted by the FBI.
According to the FBI, in plea agreements Muhammad and Ahmed Bilal admitted to engaging in martial arts and firearms in order to prepare themselves for military jihad in Afghanistan or elsewhere:
On September 29, 2001, Battle, Ford and al Saoub were discovered while engaged in shooting practice in a gravel pit in Skamania County, Washington. Also present was Ali Khalid Steitiye, who did not become an indicted member of the Portland Seven on terrorism charges, but who was separately charged with other crimes.

Ahmed Omar Abu Ali
Ahmed Omar Abu Ali (Arabic: احمد عمر أبو علي‎) is an American who was convicted of providing material support to the al Qaeda terrorist network and conspiracy to assassinate President George W. Bush.
Born in Houston, Texas, in 1981 and raised in Falls Church, Virginia, Abu Ali was valedictorian of his class at the Islamic Saudi Academy high school in nearby Alexandria. Abu Ali entered the University of Maryland in the fall of 1999 as an electrical engineering major, prayed at the Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Falls Church, Virginia (where two of the 9/11 hijackers and the suspected shooter in the Fort Hood shooting prayed), but withdrew in the middle of the 2000 spring semester to study Islamic theology at the Islamic University of Medina in Medina, Saudi Arabia.
In June 2003, Abu Ali was arrested by Saudi authorities while taking exams at the Islamic University of Medina. He was held for approximately 20 months by the Saudi government without charges or access to an attorney, and given the paucity of information coming out of Saudi Arabia about the case, many human rights organizations speculated that Abu Ali's situation was actually a case of extraordinary rendition and that he might be subject to torture. In addition, comments allegedly made by Gordon Kromberg, a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia, heightened the concerns that Abu Ali had faced torture during his detention and interrogation in Saudi Arabia. In 2003, Kromberg was asked by a defense lawyer whether Abu Ali would be brought to the United States to face charges. Kromberg responded: "He's no good for us here. He has no fingernails left," according to an affidavit filed in court by the lawyer, Salim Ali.

Ali Mohamed
Ali Abdul Saoud Mohamed, (علي محمد) (born June 3, 1952) is a double agent who worked for both the CIA and Egyptian Islamic Jihad simultaneously, reporting on the workings of each for the benefit of the other.
He came to the United States working as a translator for Ayman al-Zawahiri, who toured California mosques to raise money to fight the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. While there, Zawahiri encouraged him to infiltrate the United States, to whom he later presented himself as defecting. Since he simply walked into the CIA office in Cairo and asked to speak to the station chief and offered his services, the Americans assumed he was an Egyptian spy, but nevertheless recruited him to be a junior intelligence officer. When tasked to infiltrate a mosque with ties to Hezbollah, he simply informed the leadership he was an American spy intending to collect information; since a loyal American spy was also in the congregation, he reported Mohamed's bizarre behaviour to the CIA, who dismissed him and sought to ban him from entering the United States. Ironically however, he was simply picked up by the Special Forces in the American army, who sent him to the Special Warfare school and encouraged him to pursue a doctorate in Islamic Studies and teach courses on the Middle East.

Bassam Kanj
Bassam Kanj was one of four men, Mohamad Elzahabi, Nabil al-Marabh, Kanj and Raed Hijazi, who met each other at the Khalden training camp where they were during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Although the four men each went their separate ways following the war, in 1998 they were all working as cab drivers in Boston, Massachusetts, the first three of them all working for the same company.
Bassam moved to Boston in 1995, and immediately took work as a cab driver.
He was killed by Lebanese soldiers in 2000, while taking part in an Islamist coup.

Bryant Neal Vinas
Bryant Neal Vinas (born December 4, 1983, in Queens, New York; also Ibrahim, Bashir al-Ameriki and Ben Yameen al-Kanadeeis) is a Hispanic Muslim American convicted of participating in and supporting Al-Qaeda plots in Afghanistan and the U.S.
After converting to Islam in 2004, he traveled to Waziristan, Pakistan in 2007 with the intention of meeting and joining a jihadist group to fight U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan. He was accepted into al-Qaeda and received training in general combat and military explosives.
He also volunteered detailed information about the operation of the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) system to a senior al-Qaeda leader to help plan a bomb attack on an LIRR commuter train in New York's Penn Station. Subsequently, he participated in two al-Qaeda rocket attacks on U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan in September 2008.
He was captured by Pakistani forces in 2008 and transferred to FBI custody. In January 2009 he pled guilty to all three charges against him.
Vinas lived on Long Island, with his parents and his sister, Lina. His parents had both immigrated to the U.S., his mother from Argentina and his father, now a retired engineer, from Peru. A one-time Boy Scout who grew up in Medford, New York, Vinas was raised Catholic.

Colleen LaRose
Colleen Renee LaRose (born June 5, 1963), also known as JihadJane and Fatima LaRose, is an American citizen charged with terrorism-related crimes, including conspiracy to commit murder and providing material support to terrorists. Most recently, she lived in the Philadelphia suburb of Pennsburg, in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. She is being prosecuted in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.
She was taken into custody in October 2009, and her arrest was made public on March 9, 2010, when seven of her alleged co-conspirators were arrested in Ireland (five were later released by the Irish authorities). Among those arrested in Ireland (later released by the Irish authorities, but then arrested by U.S. authorities and charged as a co-defendant with LaRose in a superseding indictment) was Jamie Paulin-Ramirez, an American woman from Colorado whose parents say she was recruited by LaRose. Specifically, LaRose is accused of actively trying to recruit Islamic terrorists to wage violent jihad and of plotting to murder Swedish artist Lars Vilks, who had faced outrage by some Muslims for having made a drawing depicting the Prophet Muhammad's head on the body of a dog.

Daniel Maldonado
Daniel Maldonado, also known by his adopted Muslim name Daniel Aljughaifi, is a U.S. convert to a fundamentalist Islam who faces charges for an alleged association with terrorism.
Maldonado converted to Islam in 2000 in Methuen, Massachusetts. According to the Boston Globe his views became so extreme his mosque's imam asked him to either quit criticizing the mosque's other members, or to leave, according to a friend of Maldonado, Soner Uguz, of Lawrence, Massachusetts:
In mid-February 2007 Maldonado was charged with playing a role in terrorist activities in Somalia. Maldonado is notable because his charge, in a Houston, Texas court, was the first time a US citizen faced charges for participating in terrorism in Somalia.
The Boston Globe reported that, as a youth, Maldonado had minor brushes with the law, but nothing serious. Maldonado, his wife, Tamekia (née Cunningham) and three young children, moved to Egypt in November 2005. The Boston Globe reports that an FBI affidavit asserts he moved to Somalia a year later, where he undertook training in bomb-making and military skills.

Daniel Patrick Boyd
Daniel Patrick Boyd (born 1970, also known as Saifullah) is an American who in July 2009 was accused of leading a jihadist terrorist cell in North Carolina.
Boyd is the youngest of five children born to Thornton and Patricia Boyd. Thornton Boyd (died 2005) was a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. The family frequently moved. His parents separated in 1974 (divorcing in 1977), and his mother and siblings lived at times in poverty. Patricia Boyd remarried William Saddler, an American Muslim and Washington, D.C.-area lawyer from whom Daniel Boyd developed his interest in Islam. Raised Episcopalian, Boyd converted to Islam at age 17.
Boyd graduated from T. C. Williams High School in Alexandria, Virginia, where he was a defensive lineman on the football team. He married his girlfriend, Sabrina, who converted to Islam hours before their wedding.
Boyd worked in construction before moving to Peshawar, Pakistan, in October 1989. He was sponsored by a Muslim relief group to help refugees from the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan by working as a mechanic. He trained with the mujahideen and fought against the Soviet-backed forces in Afghanistan. He took the Muslim name Saifullah ("Sword of God").

David Headley
David Coleman Headley (born Daood Sayed Gilani; 30 June 1960) is a Chicago-based Pakistani American, with distinctive heterochromic eyes (one brown, one blue), who conspired with Lashkar-e-Taiba and, he claims, Pakistani military officers to launch the 2008 Mumbai attacks and other terrorist activity. He changed his South-Asian name to an English name to hide his Pakistani-Muslim identity to make travel to India easier.
Between 2002 and 2005, Headley made several trips to Pakistan for terror training while simultaneously working as an informant for the Drug Enforcement Administration. Between 2006 and 2008, he performed five spying missions in Mumbai scouting targets for the 2008 attacks, on behalf of Lashkar-e-Taiba and Pakistani ex-military officers. The attacks killed 168 people. In 2009, Headley traveled to Britain to help plan an attack against the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten, which had published cartoons of the prophet Muhammad. He was arrested in October 2009 at O'Hare International Airport on his way to Pakistan.

Detroit Sleeper Cell
The Detroit Sleeper Cell is a group of men of Middle-Eastern descent who the United States Department of Justice believed were plotting an attack on Disneyland. The members of the alleged cell were Farouk Ali-Haimoud, Ahmed Hannan, Karim Koubriti, and Abdel Ilah Elmardoudi.
While on a trip to Disneyland, the four men recorded a home video. The Justice Department believed that this recording was reconnaissance for a future terror attack. This video, combined with the testimony of self-described con-artist Youssef Hmimssa, and what the defense called doodles in a day planner, but the prosecution called terror plans, led to the conviction of Koubriti and Elmardoudi.
The prosecution claimed the five were "Takfiris" — followers of a radical Islamic sect that allowed mujahideen to drink alcohol, use narcotics, and refrain from praying, in order to blend in to Western societies, so they could mount clandestine attack on them.
Youssef Hmimssa, who plead guilty to multiple charges of credit card fraud and identity theft, agreed to testify against the four men, in a deal that would allow him to consolidate his other charges, and avoid further charges, reducing his sentence to between 37 and 46 months in prison.

Faisal Shahzad
Faisal Shahzad (Urdu: فیصل شہزاد; born June 30, 1979) is a Pakistani American who attempted the May 1, 2010, Times Square car bombing. On June 21, 2010, in Federal District Court in Manhattan he confessed to 10 counts arising from the bombing attempt. Throughout his court appearance, Shahzad was unrepentant, and the United States attorney indicated there was no plea deal, so Shahzad faced the maximum sentence, a mandatory life term.
Shahzad was arrested approximately 53 hours after the attempt, at 11:45 p.m. EDT on May 3, 2010, by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. He was taken into custody at John F. Kennedy International Airport, after boarding Emirates Flight 202 to Dubai. His final destination had been Islamabad, Pakistan.
A federal complaint was filed on May 4, alleging that Shahzad committed five terrorism-related crimes, including the attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction. Shahzad waived his constitutional right to a speedy hearing.
Shahzad has reportedly implicated himself in the crimes, and has given information to authorities since his arrest after receiving Miranda warnings. CBS News reported that Shahzad admitted training in bomb-making at a camp run by a militant Islamist faction in the Waziristan region along the Afghan border. As of May 7, Shahzad was continuing to answer questions and provide intelligence to investigators. Over a dozen people were arrested by Pakistani officials in connection with the plot.^{[citation needed]}

Farooque Ahmed

Ahmed, 34, was born in Pakistan and is a naturalized US citizen. He was born in Lahore and became a US citizen in 2002. He has lived in the US since 1993. He holds a bachelor's degree in Computer Science from the College of Staten Island and worked as a network design contractor for Ericsson. He was enrolled in an online degree in risk management from Aspen University. He is married and has a son. He has a history of several speeding violations and credit problems. At his initial court appearance he claimed that he could not afford a lawyer.

Fayez Banihammad

Banihammad arrived in the United States in June 2001. On September 11, 2001, Banihammad boarded United Airlines Flight 175 and participated in the hijacking of the plane, so it could be flown into the South Tower of the World Trade Center.
Both Banihammad and the media would often refer to him by one of his aliases, including "Fayez Ahmad", "Banihammad Fayez Abu Dhabi Banihammad", "Fayez Rashid Ahmed", "Rasid Ahmed Hassen Alqadi", "Abu Dhabi Banihammad Ahmed Fayez", and others.
Banihammad was from Khor Fakkan in the United Arab Emirates and was born to Muhammad Fayez Banihammad, a school principal. He typically went by the name "Ahmed".

Hani Hanjour
Hani Saleh Hasan Hanjour (Arabic: هاني صالح حسن حنجور‎, Hānī Ṣāliḥ Ḥasan‎ Ḥanjūr) (August 13, 1972 – September 11, 2001) was the hijacker-pilot of American Airlines Flight 77, crashing the plane into the Pentagon as part of the September 11 attacks.
A Saudi, Hanjour first came to the United States in 1991, enrolling at the University of Arizona, where he studied English for a few months before returning to Saudi Arabia early the next year.^{[citation needed]} This was prior to any intentions for a large-scale attack.^{[citation needed]} He came back to the United States in 1996, studying English in California before he began taking flying lessons in Arizona.^{[citation needed]} He received his commercial pilot certificate in 1999, and went back to his native Saudi Arabia to find a job as a commercial pilot. Hanjour applied to civil aviation school in Jeddah, but was turned down. Frustrated, his views of Islam became increasingly radical.^{[citation needed]} Hanjour left his family in late 1999, telling them that he would to be traveling to the United Arab Emirates to find work. According to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Osama bin Laden or Mohammed Atef identified Hanjour at an Afghanistan training camp as a trained pilot and selected him to participate in the September 11 attacks.^{[citation needed]}

Iyman Faris
Iyman Faris (aka Mohammad Rauf; born June 4, 1969 in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan) is a Pakistani American former truck driver from Columbus, Ohio who was convicted of providing material support to Al Qaeda, for his role in a plot to destroy the Brooklyn Bridge. His name has sometimes been mistranscribed or reported as Lyman Harris.
On June 22, 2003, the United States Department of Justice revealed to Time that Faris had served as a double agent for the FBI for months. Faris was detained two weeks after Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was arrested in Pakistan on March 1. While installed as a double agent for the U.S. government, Faris sent messages to his terrorist commanders by mobile phone and email from an FBI safe house in Virginia. A senior Bush administration official told Time, "He was sitting in the safe house making calls for us. It was a huge triumph."
He first entered the United States in 1994, and married Geneva Bowling the following year. Faris became a U.S. citizen in 1999, and allegedly returned to Pakistan the following year, and moved along to Afghanistan, where he is accused of having met Osama bin Laden. While in the region, documents provided to the court show that Faris was asked to investigate the possibility of using an ultralight aircraft as an "escape plane" for bin Laden. He used an internet cafe in Karachi, Pakistan to research ultralights and purchased 2000 sleeping bags.

Jeffrey Battle
Jeffrey Leon Battle was a member of a terrorist group dubbed the Portland Seven, some members of which attempted to travel to Afghanistan shortly after 9/11 in order to aid the Taliban. He refused to cooperate with the government and was sentenced to eighteen years in prison after pleading guilty to seditious conspiracy and levying war against the United States. He had two years added to his sentence for refusing to testify before a grand jury.
Jeffrey Battle had a checkered past. According to an article in the Star-Ledger, "Battle was a ne'er-do-well, a one-time Mary Kay cosmetics representative who was trying to wriggle out of his commitment to the U.S. Army reserves after washing out in boot camp."
Battle moved to Portland in the late 1990s from Houston, Texas, where he served as a bodyguard for New Black Panther leader and community activist Quanell X.

John Walker Lindh
John Phillip Walker Lindh (born February 9, 1981) is a United States citizen who was captured as an enemy combatant during the United States' 2001 invasion of Afghanistan. He is now serving a 20-year prison sentence in connection with his participation in Afghanistan's Taliban army. He was captured during the Battle of Qala-i-Jangi, a violent Taliban prison uprising during which Central Intelligence Agency officer Johnny "Mike" Spann was killed.
Lindh received training at Al-Farouq, a training camp in Afghanistan associated with Al-Qaeda. There, he attended a lecture by Osama bin Laden and is said to have found him "unimpressive". He was not aware of the planned September 11, 2001 attacks. After the attacks occurred, he continued to stay and fight even after he knew the US was now allied with the Northern Alliance. Lindh had previously received training with Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, an internationally designated terrorist organization based in Pakistan.
Lindh went by the name Sulayman al-Faris during his time in Afghanistan, but prefers the name Abu Sulayman al-Irlandi today. In early reports following his capture, he was usually referred to by the news media as just "John Walker".

Lars Vilks
Lars Endel Roger Vilks (born 20 June 1946) is a Swedish artist. He is best known for his drawings of Muhammed, prophet of Islam.
Vilks was born in Helsingborg, Sweden. His father is from Latvia and his mother is Swedish. He earned a Ph.D. in art history from Lund University in 1987, and worked at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts from 1988 to 1997. From 1997 to 2003, he was a professor in art theory at the Bergen National Academy of the Arts. As an art theorist, Vilks is a proponent of the institutional theory of art.^{[citation needed]}
Although an academically trained art theorist, Vilks is a self-taught artist. In the 1970s, he started painting, and in 1984, he embarked on creating the idiosyncratic sculptures that have been his hallmark, starting with Nimis. At this time, in the early 1980s, postmodernism made its definite entry into the Swedish art scene, using inspiration from e.g. the French art philosopher Jean-François Lyotard. Conceptual artists took the place of the earlier modernists on the contemporary art scene. These conceptual artists did not want their art to have any aesthetic or programmatic content, but instead often focused on the artist's self. Vilks was part of this movement in Sweden, and among other things turned himself in as a piece of art to the spring saloon at Vikingsberg in Helsingborg, and turned his own car into a piece of art at the fall exhibition at Skånes konstförening.

Brinkema was a U.S. Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of Virginia from 1985 to 1993.
On August 6, 1993, President Bill Clinton nominated Brinkema to a seat on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia vacated by Albert V. Bryan. She was confirmed by the United States Senate on October 18, 1993, and received her commission on October 20, 1993. She took up her post on October 23, 1993.

Majed Moqed
A former law student, Majed Mashaan Ghanem Moqed (Arabic: ماجد مشعان موقد‎, Mājad Mashaʼān Mūqad; also transliterated as Moqued) (June 18, 1977 – September 11, 2001) was one of five hijackers of American Airlines Flight 77 as part of the September 11 attacks.

On September 11, 2001, Moqed boarded American Airlines Flight 77 and assisted in the hijacking of the plane so that it could be crashed into the Pentagon.
Moqed was a law student from the small town of Al-Nakhil, Saudi Arabia (west of Medina), studying at King Fahd University's Faculty of Administration and Economics. Before he dropped out, he was apparently recruited into al-Qaeda in 1999 along with friend Satam al-Suqami, with whom he had earlier shared a college room.^{[citation needed]}

Michael Finton
Michael C. Finton, also known as Talib Islam (Arabic: طالب إسلام – Ṭạlib Islām‎; born in 1980 (age 31–32)), a convert to Islam and a part-time cook at a fish and chicken restaurant, attempted to bomb the Paul Findley Federal Building and the adjacent offices of Congressman Aaron Schock in downtown Springfield, Illinois, on September 24, 2009. Pled guilty on May 9, 2011 and was sentenced to 28 years in prison.
Finton, of Decatur, Illinois, was arrested by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Anti-Terrorism Task Force for attempted murder and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.
On his MySpace page, Finton listed his hometown as Visalia, California, and wrote he attended high school in Warren, Michigan; on Classmates.com he wrote that he was expelled for fighting with a teacher, and eventually moved to Illinois.
According to charges against him, on February 3, 1999, Finton indicated to a woman in Olney, Illinois, that he had "a firearm or other dangerous weapon”, took $323 and eight cartons of cigarettes “by the use of force,” and “caused great bodily harm” to the woman “in that he struck (her) in the face and pushed her into a desk.” Finton was convicted of aggravated assault and aggravated robbery and spent 1999–2005 in prison, during which time he converted to Islam. After prison, Finton sporadically attended Decatur’s only mosque, the Masjid Wali Hasan Islamic Center.

Mike Hawash
Maher Mofeid "Mike" Hawash is a Palestinian-born American engineer who was convicted and sentenced to a seven-year prison sentence in 2003 for conspiring to aid the Taliban in fighting against U.S. forces and their allies in Afghanistan. Six weeks after 9/11, Hawash secretly traveled to China with a group of Portland-area Muslims, dubbed the Portland Seven, with the intent of entering Afghanistan to aid the Taliban. Over a year later, after continuing to live and work near Portland, Hawash was arrested outside his office at Intel, setting off a heated debate about material witness arrest and detention and the USA PATRIOT Act, and galvanizing a movement to free Hawash. Hawash eventually pleaded guilty to conspiring to aid the Taliban in exchange for a reduced, seven-year sentence. He was released from prison in early 2009.
Mike Hawash was born in Nablus in the West Bank on December 12, 1964. A Jordanian citizen, in 1990 Hawash became a naturalized U.S. citizen.

Mohamad Elzahabi
Mohamad Kamal Elzahabi (aka Mohamad Kamal El-Zahabi) is a Lebanese national who worked as a small arms instructor at an Afghan training camp in the 1990s. During the War on Terror, he was arrested based on his past associations,and was convicted of immigration fraud.
Elzahabi entered the United States in 1984 on a student visa. He was married that year, but divorced in 1988. The marriage later led to his criminal conviction of immigration fraud. In 1986, he was granted permanent resident status.
In 1988, Elzahabi attended a religious conference in the Mid-Western United States, where he was persuaded to travel and help repel the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
He was a sniper and trained others on the use of the Dragunov sniper rifle at the Khalden training camp.
He became acquainted with Abu Zubaydah, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi and others during his time in the country. He also met Nabil al-Marabh, Bassam Kanj and Raed Hijazi at Khalden, relationships he would continue in the United States a decade later.

Mohamed Atta

Born in 1968 in a small town in Egypt's Nile Delta, Atta moved with his family to the Abdeen section of Cairo at the age of 10. Atta studied architecture at Cairo University, graduating in 1990, and continued his studies in Hamburg, Germany at the Technical University of Hamburg. In Hamburg, Atta became involved with the al-Quds Mosque, where he met Marwan al-Shehhi, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, and Ziad Jarrah, together forming the Hamburg cell. Atta disappeared from Germany for periods of time, spending some time in Afghanistan, including several months in late 1999 and early 2000 when he met Osama bin Laden and other top al-Qaeda leaders. Atta and the other Hamburg cell members were recruited by bin Laden and Khalid Sheikh Mohammed for the "planes operation" in the United States. Atta returned to Hamburg in February 2000, and began inquiring about flight training in the United States.

Najibullah Zazi
Najibullah Zazi (born August 10, 1985) is an Afghan-American who was arrested in September 2009 as part of the 2009 U.S. Al Qaeda group accused of planning suicide bombings on the New York City subway system, and has pled guilty as have two other defendants. U.S. prosecutors said Saleh al-Somali, Al-Qaeda's head of external operations, and Rashid Rauf, an Al-Qaeda operative, ordered the attack. Both were reportedly later killed in drone attacks.
Zazi underwent weapons and explosives training at an al-Qaeda training camp in Pakistan in 2008. On September 9, 2009, he drove from his home in the Denver, Colorado, area to New York City, intending to detonate explosives on the New York City subway during rush hour as one of three coordinated suicide "martyrdom" bombings. Spooked, however, by surveillance by U.S. intelligence, and warned by a local imam that the authorities were inquiring about him, he abruptly flew back to Denver. He was arrested days later.
On February 22, 2010, he pled guilty to conspiring to use weapons of mass destruction, conspiring to commit murder in a foreign country, and providing material support to a terrorist organization. He said he was recruited by al-Qaeda in Pakistan for a suicide "martyrdom" attack against the U.S., and that his bombing target was the New York City subway system. Zazi faces a possible life sentence without possibility of parole for the first two counts, and an additional sentence of 15 years for the third count. Sentencing was initially scheduled to take place on June 24, 2011.

Nidal Malik Hasan
Nidal Malik Hasan, USA (Arabic: نضال مالك حسن‎; born September 8, 1970) is a United States Army officer and sole accused in the November 5, 2009, Fort Hood shooting, which occurred less than a month before he would have deployed to Afghanistan.
Born in Virginia to parents who moved to the United States from a Palestinian town near Jerusalem, Hasan joined the Army while in college and became a psychiatrist at Fort Hood, Texas. Prior to the shooting, Hasan had expressed extremist views which had been brought to the attention of his superiors and the F.B.I.. Hasan was discovered to have exchanged emails with Imam Anwar al-Awlaki asking for spiritual guidance regarding violence. Al-Awlaki has since been linked to other attacks by radical Muslims, and he quickly blessed the Fort Hood operation because it was against a military target. Al-Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn also praised the "Mujahid brother" as a "pioneer, a trailblazer and a role-model." The attack was described by a Senate report as "the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil since September 11, 2001." General Jack Keane testified before a Senate committee that his first reaction was "...just how unacceptable the military’s failure to deal properly with Major Hasan’s radicalization to violent Islamist extremism was." He also agreed with "...the report’s conclusion that Hasan’s open displays of violent Islamist extremism was (sic) a violation of military rules calling for good order and discipline." He listed what he believed to be "...some of the obvious signs that Hasan should have been discharged..."

October Lewis
October Martinique Lewis was a member of a terrorist group dubbed the Portland Seven, some members of which attempted to travel to Afghanistan shortly after 9/11 in order to aid the Taliban. Lewis was sentenced to three years in a federal prison camp after cooperating with the government and pleading guilty to six counts of money laundering. Lewis admitted to transferring money abroad to Jeffrey Leon Battle, her ex-husband, in order to assist him in his efforts to aid the Taliban.
Lewis and Battle were married in 1999, divorcing after five months, although they continued to live together. According to Lewis' mother, Lewis and Battle had worked in a Portland retirement home. [1]

The members of the Portland Seven "were all named in the 15-count superseding indictment that included charges of conspiracy to levy war against the United States, conspiracy to provide material support and resources to al Qaeda, conspiracy to contribute services to al Qaeda and the Taliban, conspiracy to possess and discharge firearms in furtherance of crimes of violence, possessing firearms in furtherance of crimes of violence and money laundering." A Pakistani American is any citizen or resident of the United States who has Pakistani heritage.
Muslim immigrants from areas that are now part of Pakistan have been migrating to America and first entered the United States as early as the eighteenth century, working in agriculture, logging, and mining in the western states of California, Oregon, and Washington. The passage of the Luce-Celler Act of 1946 allowed these immigrants to acquire U.S. citizenship through naturalization. Between 1947 and 1965, only 2,500 Pakistani immigrants entered the United States; most of them were students who chose to settle in the United States after graduating from American universities, according to reports from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service. This marked the beginning of a distinct 'Pakistani' community in America. However after President Lyndon Johnson signed the INS Act of 1965 into law, eliminating per-country immigration quotas and introducing immigration on the basis of professional experience and education, the number of Pakistanis immigrating to USA increased dramatically. By 1990, the U.S. Census bureau indicated that there were about 100,000 Pakistani Americans in the United States and by 2005 their population had grown to 210,000.

Patrice Lumumba Ford
Patrice Lumumba Ford has been accused of membership in a terrorist group dubbed the Portland Seven, members of which attempted to travel to Afghanistan shortly after 9/11 in order to aid the Taliban. He refused to cooperate with the government and was sentenced to eighteen years in prison (avoiding a possible life sentence) after pleading guilty to seditious conspiracy and levying war against American and allied forces.
Patrice Lumumba Ford was Ford's birth name -- he is named after Patrice Lumumba. Ford's father, Kent Ford, had been a local leader in the Black Panther Party in the 1960s.
A family friend and political activist, Kathleen Sadat commented that "Lumumba was raised by people who taught that we exist in a multicultural world and the trick is learning how to get along with other people, not to destroy them."
Ford dropped out of Morehouse College shortly after enrolling 1989 and later enrolled at Portland State University, majoring in Chinese and International Studies. He studied for three semesters in China, where he eventually converted to Islam. Reflecting on Ford's attitude after his return to Portland, one of his instructors, professor Gerald Sussman "Ford was head and shoulders above everybody in the class... He was a very nice guy, smart and tremendously responsible."

Pervez Musharraf
Pervez Musharraf (Urdu: پرویز مشرف, born 11 August 1943) is a retired four-star general who served as the 13th Chief of Army Staff and tenth President of Pakistan as well as tenth Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee. Musharraf headed and led an administrative military government from October 1999 till August 2007. He ruled Pakistan as Chief Executive from 1999 to 2001 and as President from 2001 to 2008. Facing impeachment, he preferred to resign on 18 August 2008.
After years of military service, he rose to prominence when Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appointed him as the Chief of Army Staff in October 1998. Musharraf was the mastermind behind the controversial and internationally condemned Kargil infiltration, which derailed peace negotiations with Pakistan's long standing enemy India. He previously also played a vital role in the Afghanistan civil war (1996–2001) both in peace negotiations and in trying to end the bloodshed. After months of contentious relations with Sharif, Musharraf was brought to power through a bloodless military coup. Subsequently Nawaz Sharif was placed under a house-arrest, later shifting him to Adiala Jail.

Raed Hijazi
Born in California,Raed Hijazi was one of four men, Mohamad Elzahabi, Nabil al-Marabh, Bassam Kanj and Hijazi, who met each other at the Khalden training camp where they met during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Although the four men each went their separate ways following the war, in 1998 they were all working as cab drivers in Boston, Massachusetts, the first three of them all working for the same company.
He was roommates with Nabil al-Marabh for at least two months in Boston, while they both worked as cab drivers.
He was convicted in Jordan of planning Millennium attacks within the country.

Rafiq Abdus Sabir
Rafiq Abdus Sabir, an American doctor convicted of supporting terrorism, had agreed to provide medical treatment to insurgents wounded in the US-led Invasion of Iraq.
Born in New York, Sabir was raised by his mentally ill mother after his father abandoned the family. He graduated from Columbia University and worked as an emergency room physician in Boca Raton, Florida (including at Glades General Hospital) and Saudi Arabia, paying off $750,000 from medical school debts, living with his common-law wife Arlene Morgan, and their two sons.
He was approached by undercover FBI agent Ali Soufan, who pretended to a member of al-Qaeda wanting to set up medical care for injured fighters. Sabir was arrested on May 28, 2005 at his home in the Villa San Remo gated community, where he had lived for the past two years.
Sabir is a friend of Tarik Shah, a New York jazz musician and martial-arts expert who was convicted of agreeing to provide training to Iraqi insurgents. Shah pled guilty and agreed to serve 15 years in prison, and was the one who gave the FBI Sabir's name as a "co-accomplice". Brooklyn bookstore owner Abdulrahman Farhane and Washington D.C. cabdriver Mahmud al-Mutazzim received 13 and 15 years imprisonment respectively, in the same FBI sting operation.

Rezwan Ferdaus
Rezwan Ferdaus is a U.S. citizen, born and raised in Massachusetts, of Bangladeshi descent, who was arrested by the FBI on September 28, 2011, for allegedly plotting to attack The Pentagon and United States Capitol with remote-controlled model aircraft packed with explosives. He was also charged with supporting Al-Qaeda and plotting attacks on U.S. soldiers abroad, by making IED detonators. Ferdaus, who is unmarried with no children, graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in Physics. If convicted he faces more than 20 years in prison. Ferdaus' only known previous crimes are a senior prank, pouring cement on ground in front of the doors of his high school and possession of marijuana.
Rezwan played drums in the Goosepimp Orchestra but has been gone from the band for over 6 years. He went by the name "Bollywood" when he played in the band.

Sahim Alwan
Sahim Alwan is a Yemeni-American who grew up in the suburbs of Buffalo, New York. In 2002, he was arrested and charged as part of the War on Terror together with the other members of the "Lackawanna Six", based on the fact the group of friends had attended an Afghan training camp together years earlier.
Described as the "clean-cut" son of a steelworker, Alwan was noted for always wearing a shirt and tie, every day of his adult life, and studied criminal justice at the local community college. During the Gulf War, he and a group of friends were assaulted for their ethnicity outside a Lackawanna restaurant.
In the late 1990s, while working for Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association, he cooperated with the FBI to help investigate a fraud case, and asked them about the possibility of working for them as a career.
A "local success story", he maintained a stable marriage, had three children, and worked with the Iroquois Job Corps Center to help employ indigent and troubled youth.
At al-Farooq, he was the first to announce he wanted to leave and return home. He met personally with Osama bin Laden, who wanted to convince him to stay and finish his training, but ultimately made it clear that he was discouraged by the fact they were training for offensive wars and wars against fellow Muslims, rather than in defence of Muslim populations.

Sayed Malike
A New York cab driver, Sayed Abdul Malike was arrested after allegedly trying to purchase explosives and investigating bridges and ships near Miami, Florida. He was not accused of ties to any terrorist groups, although false rumors about "known connections to al-Qaeda" were common.
Malike legally entered the United States from Afghanistan on September 26 1996, and was awarded political refugee status in 1998 with help from immigration lawyer Eric Levine. He had also traveled to Italy and Pakistan, and settled in Astoria, Queens. He is married with two children, although his wife lives in Pakistan.
In 2000, he launched a $5,000,000 lawsuit against the New York Port Authority, complaining his civil rights had been ignored in an altercation with police at the 42nd Street bus station. brought about by being issued a fine for jumping to the front of a line of taxicabs. He allegedly ripped his shirt off and "went berserk", and began banging his head on the car shouting about the "Giuliani Police State", while he claims that officer William Finnie beat him. He told the jurors that he was a lowly immigrant driving a cab to raise funds for a human rights organisation in Afghanistan, but the suit was rejected.

Shafal Mosed is a Yemeni-American who grew up in the suburbs of Buffalo, New York. Born in Detroit, Michigan, Mosed moved to Lackawanna as a child when his father's automotive job with Ford Motor Company was relocated to the Buffalo plant.
When his father died of a heart attack, Mosed was left in charge of caring for his sickly mother and three younger siblings. The family lived in poverty, as Mosed worked as a telemarketer and took computer courses at the local community college.
Taher, Moseb and Galeb all decided to leave together after Sahim Alwan made it clear he wanted to return home and was unhappy with the tone of the camp. They were driven to Quetta, and rather than wait a day for the next plane, took a bus to Karachi so they could leave Pakistan immediately.

Sharif Mobley
Sharif Mobley (Arabic: شريف موبلي‎; born January 19, 1984, Buena, New Jersey) is a suspected al-Qaeda and al-Shabab member who was arrested in Yemen in March 2010 by counter-terrorism officers following a shooting in which he was allegedly the perpetrator.^{[citation needed]} Mobley had moved to Yemen two years prior.^{[citation needed]} He was initially arrested along with other suspected militants, before killing a guard during an escape attempt on March 7, 2010.^{[citation needed]}
Mobley is an American citizen who was raised as a Muslim. He claimed to have traveled to Yemen for the purpose of studying Arabic and Islam, although U.S. officials state his purpose was to join a militant group.^{[citation needed]} Mobley had been arrested some time prior to the shooting (for a month according to some reports and several months according to others) in a sweep of suspected al-Qaeda militants.^{[citation needed]} He allegedly shot two guards, one fatally, during an escape attempt from a hospital in which he was undergoing physical evaluation.^{[citation needed]} Mobley was wounded during the ensuing three-hour-long siege before being arrested by Yemeni security forces.^{[citation needed]}

Shirwa Ahmed
Shirwa Ahmed was a 26-year old Somali-American who is the first known American suicide bomber.
Ahmed immigrated to the United States as a child, resided in Minneapolis, Minnesota and entered the Roosevelt High School in September 1996. He became a naturalized American citizen and went on to attend community college before dropping out and worked odd jobs. In 2004, Ahmed began associating with a new group of friends perceived as having been religious; he was "radicalized in his hometown in Minnesota" according to Robert Mueller, the director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He was one of twenty Somali-American men who departed the Minneapolis area for Somalia, a trend which the focus of one of the larger domestic terrorism investigations since September 11, 2001. Motivated by a mixture of politics and religion, he joined the Shabab, a militant Somali group. Then, on October 29, 2008, — or the 28th — he drove a car loaded with explosives into a government compound in Puntland in the northern region of the country. The FBI investigated the incident and returned Ahmed's remains to Minneapolis that November.

Yahya Goba
Yahya Goba is a Yemeni-American who grew up in the suburbs of Buffalo, New York. When Kamal Derwish moved back to Lackawanna in 2000, he lived with his uncle until Goba volunteered to split an apartment with him. Derwish then began holding regular get-togethers at the apartment, where a group of upwards to 25 young Muslim men would get together to discuss religion and eat pizza. Goba and Jaber Elbaneh tended to "compete" for the attention and favour of Derwish, who spoke of his travels abroad and ostensible history fighting in Palestine.
He applied for a new passport, noting that his old one had been destroyed after being thrown in the washing machine in a shirt pocket. Authorities have claimed he was trying to erase the incriminating visa stamps marking his overseas visits.

Yaseinn Taher
Yaseinn Taher is a Yemeni-American who grew up in the suburbs of Buffalo, New York. The Taher household was not considered devoutly Muslim, although they forbade their children to date, they also exchanged gifts for Christmas and weren't "regulars" at mosque worship services.
Taher was captain of the Lackawanna Steelers soccer team, and dated the cheerleader Nicole Frick, whose Catholic parents approved of him since he seemed "more white" than most Muslim-Americans living in the area.
At his 1996 graduation, he was voted "friendliest" person of the graduating class. He attended community college, while working odd jobs and living with his parents. In 1998, when Nicole informed him she was pregnant, the 18-year old Taher arranged a hasty Islamic wedding in his parents' living room.

Zacarias Moussaoui
Zacarias Moussaoui (Arabic: زكريا موساوي, Zakariyyā Mūsawī; born May 30, 1968) is a French citizen who was convicted of conspiring to kill citizens of the US as part of the September 11 attacks. As a result of his conviction, he is serving a life sentence without parole at the Federal ADX Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado, USA.
Moussaoui was alleged to have been a replacement for the "first" 20th hijacker, possibly Ramzi bin al-Shibh. Bin al-Shibh and Zakariyah Essabar were denied visas. However, prosecutors in Moussaoui's drawn-out trial in the US had difficulty directly connecting him to the 19 participants.
Moussaoui's trial was seen in some circles as a barometer of the ability and willingness of the United States to give a fair hearing to terrorism suspects. Others objected to the degree to which the court and especially Judge Leonie Brinkema tolerated the bizarre and threatening courtroom behavior of Moussaoui. Moussaoui expressed contempt for the trial and court by introducing legal motions deriding Judge Brinkema, surprised onlookers by electing to represent himself in court, and rankled federal prosecutors by requesting the presence of captured al-Qaeda members as witnesses in his case. During the course of the proceedings, Moussaoui admitted his guilt in various degrees, and to being a member of al-Qaeda.

Ziad Jarrah
Ziad Samir Jarrah (Arabic: زياد سمير جراح‎, Ziyād Samīr Ǧarrāḥ) (May 11, 1975 – September 11, 2001) was one of the masterminds of the September 11 attacks who served as the hijacker-pilot of United Airlines Flight 93, crashing the plane into a field in a rural area near Shanksville—after a passenger uprising—as part of the coordinated attacks.
After a wealthy and secular upbringing, Jarrah moved to Germany in 1996. He became involved in the planning of the September 11 attacks while attending TUHH in the late 1990s, meeting Mohamed Atta, Marwan al-Shehhi and Ramzi bin al-Shibh, forming in 1998 what is now known as the Hamburg cell. Jarrah was recruited by Osama bin Laden for the attacks in 1999. Unique among the hijackers, he was close to his family and girlfriend.
Jarrah arrived in the United States in June 2000, he trained at Florida Flight Training Center from June 2000 to January 2001, after relocating to Florida from New Jersey.
On September 7, 2001, Jarrah flew from Fort Lauderdale to Newark. On September 11, Jarrah boarded United 93, and he is believed to have taken over as the pilot of the aircraft along with his team of hijackers, which included Saeed al-Ghamdi, Ahmed al-Nami and Ahmed al-Haznawi who together made an unsuccessful attempt to crash the plane into the U.S. Capitol or the White House, since the passengers started a revolt against the hijackers.

Among the cities in which he resided at various times were Denver, Detroit, Columbia and Orlando.
In 1991, while living in Denver, he was vice president of the Denver Islamic Society. By 1994 he was residing in Detroit and his name and address were reflected in ledgers taken from the Al Kifah Refugee Center, a financial and strategic arm of al-Qaeda.
Upon moving to Columbia, Missouri, he was known as Ziyad Khaleel, but began using the surname Sadaqa as early as 1996. That year he was a fundraiser and one of eight regional directors of the Islamic African Relief Agency (IARA), which the government later determined was a front for al-Qaeda and Hamas.

Iyman Faris (aka Mohammad Rauf;^[1] born June 4, 1969 in Azad Kashmir, Pakistan) is a Pakistani American^[2]^[3] former truck driver from Columbus, Ohio who was convicted of providing material support to Al Qaeda, for his role in a plot to destroy the Brooklyn Bridge. His name has sometimes been mistranscribed or reported as Lyman Harris.

On June 22, 2003, the United States Department of Justice revealed to Time that Faris had served as a double agent for the FBI for months. Faris was detained two weeks after Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was arrested in Pakistan on March 1. While installed as a double agent for the U.S. government, Faris sent messages to his terrorist commanders by mobile phone and email from an FBI safe house in Virginia. A senior Bush administration official told Time, "He was sitting in the safe house making calls for us. It was a huge triumph."^[4]

Early history [link]

He first entered the United States in 1994, and married Geneva Bowling the following year. Faris became a U.S. citizen in 1999, and allegedly returned to Pakistan the following year, and moved along to Afghanistan, where he is accused of having met Osama bin Laden. While in the region, documents provided to the court show that Faris was asked to investigate the possibility of using an ultralight aircraft as an "escape plane" for bin Laden. He used an internet cafe in Karachi, Pakistan to research ultralights and purchased 2000 sleeping bags.^[1]

At some point Faris was counseled by a local imam for suicidality, and tried to jump off a bridge in Columbus before he was restrained and taken for a psychiatric evaluation.^[5] Faris' five-year marriage ended in 2000. His ex-wife later said he had suffered from hearing imaginary voices and sudden bouts of believing that somebody was choking him.

Brooklyn Bridge plot [link]

In late 2001, while in Pakistan, Faris went to a travel agency to have expired airline tickets to Yemen re-issued for several unknown colleagues. Since he wasn't the original purchaser, he claimed to be a preacher from Tablighi Jamaat.^[6]

In early 2002, Faris was introduced to an operative identified only as "C-2", and learned of a plot allegedly involving the simultaneous destruction of the Brooklyn Bridge by cutting through cables with blowtorches, and a second group that would derail a train in Washington D.C. Faris' investigations into obtaining the necessary tools for the dual-operation involved asking a friend where he might purchase welding equipment, and researching the structure of the bridge on the internet. He concluded that the operation was unlikely, and sent a message back to Pakistan calling off the plot, stating that "The weather is too hot".^{[citation needed]}

Working for FBI [link]

On March 19, 2003, Faris was visited by two FBI agents and an anti-terror officer, who confronted him with testimony from Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, and the results of an intercepted telephone call. Faris was reportedly friendly and accommodating, and agreed to let the agents search his apartment the following day.^[7]

He was then granted a deal to work as a double agent, reporting to the FBI. He was ordered to leave his home in Columbus, and stay at a safe house in Virginia from which he would appear to continue discussions with his contacts, reporting the information back to the authorities. He told authorities that Majid Khan, a Baltimore youth who worked at his father's gas station, had referred to Khalid Sheikh Mohammed as an "uncle" and spoken of a desire to kill Pakistani dictator Pervez Musharraf.^[8] After Khan was taken into custody, sent to a CIA black site and transferred to Guantanamo Bay, Faris said that his accusations were "an absolute lie" and that he had been coerced into making the statements.^[8]

Criminal charges [link]

On May 1, 2003, Faris pled guilty to both charges, providing material support and resources to Al Qaeda and conspiracy for providing the terrorist organization with information about possible U.S. targets for attack.^[9] The documents relating to the charges were not unsealed until June 19, 2003. Shortly after, it was revealed that Faris had in fact been a double agent working under orders from the FBI.^[4]

On September 25 he sought to withdraw his guilty plea, claiming that while he admitted to meeting with Khalid, he had merely been seeking information about Al-Qaeda for a book he wanted to write. He argued that Khalid was giving false information to authorities as revenge, for Faris refusing to be recruited into Al-Qaeda by the lieutenant. The appeal was rejected.^[10] On October 28 he was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by District Court Judge Leonie Brinkema.^[9]

According to the New York Times, the plot was uncovered with assistance from the NSA eavesdropping program. Faris' new lawyer David B. Smith announced that they were looking into a direct lawsuit against George W. Bush, who personally authorized the illegal wiretaps. In 2004, Nuradin Abdi, charged with plotting to detonate explosives in shopping centres, said that Faris had picked him up from Port Columbus International Airport.^[11]

Kelli was born in Brooklyn, New York. She earned a bachelor's degree from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

She started with the network in New York City in 1985, and went on air in 1993. She started as a business/economic journalist, producing and reporting for the award winning "Moneyline with Lou Dobbs". She was named one of the top business journalists under the age of 30 by The Journal of Financial Reporting for 4 years in a row. In 1987, Arena played an integral role in the coverage of the Stock Market crash. She was part of the CNN team that won a Peabody ,Cable Ace and Houston film festival award. Arena moved to London in 1991 to work as an Executive Producer for World Business Today. She started her on-air career in London in 1993. In 1995, she was based in Tokyo as a correspondent and covered the Sarin Gas attacks. In 1995, she moved to Washington DC, just in time to report on the U-S government shutdown. As a business/economic correspondent in DC, Arena covered both Capitol Hill and the White house. In 1999, Arena was the network's lead correspondent investigating the Firestone and Ford tire controversy. In 2000, Arena was named Justice Correspondent. She is noted for her part in reporting CNN's coverage of the September 11th terrorist attacks, the 2001 Anthrax scare, and DC Sniper attacks. In 2006, Arena added the Supreme Court to her beat.^[2] She was frequently a reporter for CNN's morning program "American Morning" and its daily evening newscast "The Situation Room".^[3] She left CNN in January 2009.^[4]^[5] She appears as a panelist on Tru Tv's "In Session".

After leaving CNN, Arena was a lead trainer for the National Democratic Institute's Youth of Today, Leaders of Tomorrow program; a year-long program for women leaders from throughout North Africa. She has also trained women from the Middle East as part of the NDI's Young Women Leaders Academy. Arena has also worked with Women Candidates ,Youth Organizations and non-profits in Egypt and Morocco as a communications strategist, and leadership trainer.

In 2010, Arena joined News Certified Exchange as a Vice President, helping the company populate a database of experts for journalists. Arena works with NCE clients on communications and messaging strategy and trains executives for interaction with the media.

Arena is currently teaching at Sam Houston State University, the recipient of the Dan Rather Endowed Chair.^[6] She is currently married and has 3 children.
