Javier Colon (alternately styled Javier Colón, born April 29, 1978) is an American singer and songwriter. He has referred to his style of music as being "acoustic soul." He was a member of EmcQ and The Derek Trucks Band, and worked with many musicians before going solo. From 2002 to 2006, he was signed to Capitol Records, known as artist Javier. But in 2006, the contract was terminated and Javier Colon became an independent artist with his own label, Javier Colon Music. In 2011, he was the winner of the inaugural season of the U.S. television show on NBC, The Voice, receiving $100,000 and signing a recording contract with Universal Republic Records.

Colon was born in Stratford, Connecticut,^[1] the son of a Dominican father and Puerto Rican mother,.^[2] His father worked in a radio station.^[3] He went to Frank Scott Bunnell High School in Stratford, Connecticut, where he started writing songs. Then he pursued a degree in music education from the University of Hartford's Hartt School. While studying, Javier also performed as vocalist and percussionist in EmcQ, a soul/funk band led by lead guitarist Ian McHugh and mainly dedicated to the legacy of Stevie Wonder.

When EmcQ opened a show for the soul-jazz trio Soulive, the group's guitarist, Eric Krasno, was impressed by Javier's vocals and recommended him to his friend Derek Trucks, who he knew was looking for a lead vocalist for The Derek Trucks Band.^[2] Following his college graduation^[2] and a successful audition in July 2000, Javier joined the band in August 2000.^[4]

After touring with the band for nearly two years, Javier, then 24 years old, left the band in April 2002 to pursue a solo career,^[4] having been signed by Capitol Records. He went on to release two albums with Capitol Records, the first the self-titled Javier in 2003, and the second entitled Left of Center in 2006.^[2]

Since parting ways with Capitol Records, Javier has performed with such diverse acts as Joss Stone, Darius Rucker, the Indigo Girls, Stevie Nicks, Adam Levine, and Anthony Hamilton,^[5] and recorded an EP on his own label, Javier Colon Music.^[6] On stage, Javier's primary instruments are steel and nylon stringed acoustic guitars by Larrivée (guitar company) and Taylor Guitars.^{[citation needed]} In 2009 he was featured as singer and songwriter for song, "October Sky", on Vanessa Williams's vocal album, The Real Thing.

Javier^[7] (2003)

On August 5, 2003 - Javier released his debut album, self-titled album on Capitol Records. His first single, entitled "Crazy", debuted at #95 on Billboard Hot 100 and reached #42 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.^[8] The second single, "Beautiful U R", did not have the same commercial success as his first release. The album reached #91 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and #18 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Javier consisted of mainly R&B songs, with a mixture of other genres such as Jazz and Funk, as well as a little influence of Javier's Latin roots. After the release, Javier's music style drew comparisons to the likes of Brian McKnight, Babyface, and Kenny Lattimore.^{[citation needed]} Pianist Mulgrew Miller and trumpeter Roy Hargrove both performed on the final track "October Sky," the only featured artists to appear on the album.

Left of Center^[9] (2006)

On March 7, 2006 - Three years after his self-titled debut, Javier released his second album Left of Center.^[10] The album title was used to demonstrate that Javier was not like the rest of the present Contemporary R&B artists. Javier did keep to his main R&B/Neo-soul genre, but again mixed in other styles and genres. Three singles from album were released: "Indecent Proposal", "Dance for Me", and "The Answer is Yes". None of them had any major success, and the album only reached #37 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. Like Javier, Left of Center had minimal artist features, namely just fellow R&B artist Anthony Hamilton who appeared on the song "Count On Me". Although the album was not successful commercially, multiple reviews praised Javier for his unique style and willingness to do his own thing.^{[citation needed]}

The Truth-Acoustic - EP^[11] (2010)

On August 3, 2010 - This six-song EP entitled "The Truth"^[12] was released on Javier's own label. In the Album Notes for the EP at CD Baby, Javier is quoted as saying, "The Truth-Acoustic EP is part 1 of a larger project that I've been working on for over 3 years. I've taken a few songs that will be on my upcoming album Ok... Here's The Truth^[13] and recorded them acoustically for this EP."

Starting April 26, 2011, Javier Colon^[14] appeared as a contestant on NBC's reality talent show The Voice. The show, produced by John de Mol and Mark Burnett, features a group of contestants competing for a $100,000 grand prize and a Universal Republic recording contract.

On the first show, Javier sang the Cyndi Lauper classic "Time After Time".^[15] All four judges, Adam Levine, Cee-Lo Green, Blake Shelton and Christina Aguilera, opted to take him as one of their finalists, with both Levine and Shelton giving him a standing ovation. He was the only contestant in blind auditions stage besides Jeff Jenkins to win all four judges. As judge Shelton was very late in hitting his "I Want You" button, despite urging by the other judges, show host Carson Daly jokingly said, "Oh Blake, you're an idiot!"^{[citation needed]}

In comments, Cee Lo Green called him a "soul brother" and said "it was perfect". Levine added: "It was so perfect, it was so tasteful too.. I wanna win this (expletive), so I really need, really need for you to pick me..." Blake added: "I'm clearly over my head here... and I'm already a fan of yours already". Javier eventually chose Adam Levine as his coach/mentor.^[16]

On May 17, 2011, in the Battle Round (the Final 32), Javier's coach Adam Levine put him against Angela Wolff choosing that they both sing "Stand By Me",^[17] originally by Ben E. King. As a result, Levine picked him to continue in the show in the live shows, as part of the Final 16.

On June 14, 2011, Javier Colon sang Sarah McLachlan's song "Angel".^[18]

On June 21, 2011, Javier Colon sang Coldplay's "Fix You".^[19] The judges and the audience seemed to be thrilled that he took his signature hat off. Colon's coach, Adam Levine, said "You are the real deal. Competition or no, you have one of the best voices I've ever heard, ever!"

On June 22, 2011, Javier Colon advanced in the competition by accumulating the highest score on Team Adam. The highest score was determined by coach Adam Levine's score in combination with all America's votes. He beat out fellow team member Casey Weston to move on in the music competition.

On June 24, 2011, Javier Colon and the rest of The Voice "Final Four" contestants appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.^[20] During each commercial break each contestant sang a song that he or she had previously performed on The Voice. During one of the commercial breaks, Javier sang "Time After Time". At the end of the broadcast, The Voice "Final Four" joined in song and performed The Beatles song "Come Together".^[21]

On June 28, 2011, Javier Colon sang an original song titled "Stitch by Stitch".^[22] The song was produced by himself, his coach Adam Levine and Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins. Later in the show, Javier and his coach Adam Levine performed a cover together of "Man In the Mirror" by Michael Jackson.^[23]

On June 29, 2011, Javier Colon and Stevie Nicks performed "Landslide" together. At the end of the show, the voting results were announced. With more votes than any other contestant, Javier Colon won the first season of NBC's "The Voice", receiving $100,000 in cash and a Universal Republic recording contract.^[24]

Javier Colon has launched his new album Come Through For You that was released on Universal Republic Records. The debut single from the album is "As Long As We Got Love" and features Natasha Bedingfield. The album also includes "Stand Up", a song that features his mentor during The Voice, Adam Levine and a song "Raise Your Hand" ^[25] co-written by Season 8 American Idol Winner, Kris Allen.

Taylor Reuben Hicks (born October 7, 1976) is an American singer who achieved fame in 2006, when he won the fifth season of American Idol. Hicks got his start as a professional musician in his late teens and performed around the Southeastern United States for well over the span of a decade, during which he also released two independent albums. Upon winning Idol, he was signed to Arista Records, under which his self-titled major label debut was released on December 12, 2006. His energetic stage performances and influences derived from classic rock, blues, and R&B music had earned him a following of devout fans, who have been dubbed the "Soul Patrol." He performed on Broadway in 2008 and on national tour in 2009 in Grease playing Teen Angel, the role originated by Alan Paul.^[1] The new CD, The Distance, was released March 10, 2009, with the first single, "What's Right Is Right", going to AC adds January 27, 2009. The second single was confirmed to be "Seven Mile Breakdown" via his Myspace page.^[2] In May 2011, Taylor Hicks opened ORE Drink and Dine restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama’s Crestline Park. Taylor Hicks was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on October 7, 1976,^[5] to Bradley Hicks and Pamela Dickinson. His hair started turning gray by the time he was 14. He and his family had moved to suburban Hoover, Alabama when he was eight years old. His parents divorced, and stepmother Linda shared custody of their son until he became of age. Hicks has suggested his difficult childhood as the reason for his turning to soul and blues music for solace.^[6] He has a younger half-brother, Sean, who later convinced him to audition for American Idol.^[7]

He bought his first harmonica when he was 16, for $2 at a flea market in Bessemer, Alabama,^[6] and taught himself to play blues harp. He discovered that he possessed absolute pitch when he was able to recognize the pitches of ordinary noises and mimic them on the harmonica.^[8] Hicks was 18 when he wrote his first song, "In Your Time", and he taught himself to play electric guitar when he was 19.^[9]

Hicks graduated from Hoover High School in 1995. He played varsity baseball, soccer, and basketball while studying in Hoover. He then pursued a major in business and journalism at Auburn University, but lost interest and dropped out after three years.^[10]

While in college, Hicks was part of a band called Passing Through, which he later quit to start his own band.^[12] In 1997, he independently recorded In Your Time, an album which included both studio and live tracks. In 2000, he moved to pursue a music career in Nashville, Tennessee, where he worked with Nashville veterans Billy Earl McClelland and Percy Sledge^[6] to record a three-track demo but was unable to find a label that would sign him. He left Nashville after a year due to what he called the "oversaturation of the market".^[13] Hicks returned to Alabama and launched a professional music career, performing at various venues and parties mostly around the Southeastern United States, including The War Eagle Supper Club (a popular college bar) in Auburn, Alabama.^[14] Hicks has performed with the likes of Widespread Panic, James Brown, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, Drive-By Truckers, Robert Randolph, Snoop Dogg, and Keb Mo.^[15] He also performed in the huge infield of Talladega Superspeedway in 2004 during a NASCAR race weekend.^[16]

He recorded, produced, and released a second album, Under the Radar, in 2005. Despite releasing two albums prior to appearing on American Idol, he did not violate their requirements for contestants, as he had never held a recording contract.^[17]

Hicks has allowed audience members to record his concerts for personal, non-commercial use, and has authorized the Internet Archive to create a section for fans to upload and share their recordings. The Archive does not accept the upload of concerts recorded after January 1, 2006 due to the terms of his "American Idol" contract.^[18]

Hicks auditioned for American Idol in Las Vegas, Nevada, on October 10, 2005. Hicks passed the audition with the approval of judges Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, but not Simon Cowell, who said that Hicks would never make it to the final round. On Hicks' first performance for the voting public, Cowell called back to this quote, admitting he was wrong.

On the May 10, 2006, results show, Hicks along with Katharine McPhee and Elliott Yamin, were announced as the Top 3 finalists. On May 12, Idol producers brought Hicks to Birmingham for a weekend of promotional events including television interviews for the local Fox affiliate, a downtown parade, concerts, and an audience with Governor Bob Riley.^[19][20] May 12 was proclaimed "Taylor Hicks Day" and Hicks was given the key to the city.^[21] Also on May 12, Gov. Riley issued a proclamation making May 16 "Taylor Hicks Day".^[22]

Hicks was named the new American Idol on May 24, 2006, winning the title over McPhee, with over 63.4 million votes cast in total. The proclamation was aired to a worldwide audience of 200 million television viewers.^[23] With his win at age 29, Hicks became the oldest contestant to win American Idol. He was the first male contestant to win American Idol without ending up in the bottom two or three.

In June 2006, Ford Motor Company, the show's major sponsor, signed Hicks to promote Ford's "Drive on Us" year-end sales event.^[24] He was also named Hottest Bachelor by People magazine for 2006, appearing on the magazine's cover.^[25]

Hicks played harmonica and guitar on every date of the American Idols LIVE! Tour.

Hicks signed a recording contract with 19 Recordings Limited/Arista Records, managed by American Idol creator Simon Fuller, in May 2006.^[26][27] Hicks' debut single "Do I Make You Proud" debuted on the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and was subsequently certified gold by the RIAA.^[28]

Hicks made guest appearances in concerts by Snoop Dogg, Widespread Panic, and Willie Nelson, among others.^[12] Hicks also joined his fellow Top 10 Idol finalists on the American Idols LIVE! Tour which ran from July to September. The members of the former Taylor Hicks Band, formed by Hicks two years prior, regrouped as the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra and shadowed the Idols' tour route. Hicks occasionally appeared as a "special guest" when circumstances permitted, and was even accompanied at times by the other Idols, such as Elliott Yamin, Chris Daughtry, Ace Young, and Bucky Covington.^[29]

In August 2006, Hicks' lawyers sued a producer with whom he worked in Nashville, for redistributing without permission songs that Hicks had copyrighted in 1997. The lawsuit was dropped when the masters were handed over to Hicks.^[30]

In the same month, it was announced that Hicks received a $750,000 (USD) deal to write a memoir of his life.^[31] Titled Heart Full of Soul: An Inspirational Memoir About Finding Your Voice and Finding Your Way and ghostwritten by Rolling Stone writer David Wild, the book was released in July 2007 by Random House.

On June 6, 2008, Hicks joined the cast of the Broadway musical Grease in the Brooks Atkinson Theatre. He played the role of "Teen Angel."^[32] Once his 18 month tour in the traveling Broadway show 'Grease' ended, Hicks performed in over 20 live shows. He has recently appeared on TV in Don't Forget the Lyrics and appeared on Celebrity Ghost Stories in December 2010.

[edit] 2006–2008: Taylor Hicks and Early Works

Studio recording sessions for the eponymous major label debut Taylor Hicks ran in Calabasas, California between October and November 2006, and took six weeks in total.^[33] The album was released on December 12, 2006 and debuted at the number two spot on the Billboard 200 charts.^[34] It was certified as a platinum album by the RIAA on January 17, 2007.^[35] Hicks embarked on a three-month US promotional tour for his album that started on February 21 in Jacksonville, Florida, and ended in Seattle, Washington on May 12.^[36] December 16, 2007, Hicks performed "Do I Make You Proud" live together with six Asian Idol finalists in Jakarta Indonesia. Hicks also performed on the American Idol (season 6) finale at the Kodak Theatre on May 23, 2007.

In July 2007, Hicks released his autobiography, Heart Full of Soul: An Inspirational Memoir About Finding Your Voice and Finding Your Way.

Despite winning American Idol 2006, Hicks' post-Idol career had its ups and downs. Arista Records confirmed in January 2008 that it had dropped Hicks from its roster.^[37] Hicks had, at that stage, the lowest selling American Idol winner's album.

Early January, Taylor Hicks made this statement on his MySpace page:

"To all my fans and The Soul Patrol, I want to take a moment to talk about the recent news that my label and I have mutually parted ways. The important thing for all of you to remember is that I've been a working musician my whole life. This is turning the page on a new chapter of my career. Artistic freedom and control is an exciting prospect. The things that are most important to me is creating my art, performing it, and my fans. With the momentum that all of you have created over the years, Taylor Hicks is not going to stop anytime soon. I've started working on the new album, writing and scheduling exciting collaborations. The DVD, Whomp at the Warfield, is in its final stages, and will be released soon. So as one door closes, a new one opens for 2008 with more excitement for all my fans than ever before. Sit tight, because the best is yet to come!"^[38]

As of June 2008, Hicks has signed a distribution deal with Vanguard/Welk records to distribute a compilation album Early Works. He also starred in Grease in the national tour as the Teen Angel after playing the role on Broadway.^[39][40] Early Works was released on August 12, 2008.^[41]

In 2009 Hicks released his second album, The Distance, on his own label, Modern Whomp Records, on March 10, 2009. The first single, "What's Right Is Right", was added to AC adds on January 27, 2009. So far the single reached number twenty-four on Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks. It was produced by Simon Climie and Dennis Morgan. On the day of the album's release, Hicks wrote on his MySpace,

"Well the day is finally here release day of "The Distance". I am writing you all to express how excited I am for everyone to really get a chance to listen to the record!! I also want to send a BIG THANK YOU to all of the fans, friends and family and staff who have worked so hard on this record. I really am in a comfortable place with where I want to be as an entertainer.. I wanted to record songs that can really come to life from a live standpoint as well..There is a wonderful and savvy plan in place for working this record for an extended amount of time. We are still holding some exciting things for the second single as well!! I'm also excited about touring with the Broadway show "Grease" because it allows me to really be with new and old fans all across the country again and I get to sing the single every night as well... I will tour this record. I believe that people have to also understand that the business of tour production is challenging to say the least. Also I just want to pass along that I will be overhauling the HQ site soon with a brand new look and a lot more insight to what's happening out here on the road. Hicks returned to the American Idol stage on April 29, 2009 during Season 8 and performed the second single from The Distance, "Seven Mile Breakdown", which was re-released in a country format.

Both "What's Right is Right" and "Seven Mile Breakdown" were made into music videos.

In May 2009, Taylor Hicks made Forbes' "Top Ten earning American Idol stars" list, coming in at number 10, with over $300,000 earned from album sales and from his role as "Teen Angel" in the national tour of Grease.^[42]

On April 19, 2012, Hicks appeared on American Idol and announced he would begin a residency at Bally's in Las Vegas on June 26.^{[citation needed]} Entertainment Weekly magazine revealed that Hicks would be a celebrity contestant on Fox dating show called The Choice.^{[citation needed]}

Soul Patrol[link]

Hicks's fanbase has been dubbed the "Soul Patrol". The phrase started among his Internet fanbase after the episode of Hicks's Idol auditions aired, but it is difficult to trace its exact origin. Hicks frequently mentioned the Soul Patrol after performances on Idol, which was best shown after winning the competition—Ryan Seacrest asked if he had any parting words and Hicks yelled, "Soul Patrol!"^[43]

During a promotional event for Idol in Alabama, Hicks "inducted" Governor Bob Riley and his wife into the Soul Patrol.^[44] In addition to zealously following the musical career of Hicks and related artists, the Soul Patrol is also known for its charity work on behalf of various organizations such as Studio By The Tracks, Kid One Transport, Habitat for Humanity, and American Red Cross, among others.

Hicks became the subject of two Weekend Update skits on NBC's Saturday Night Live on April 15 and May 20, 2006, portrayed by cast member Jason Sudeikis. In a reference to Hicks's quirkiness and disposition, Sudeikis mocked playing Hicks's trademark harmonica and repeatedly shouted out "Soul Patrol!"^[45] Hicks, when interviewed by Ryan Seacrest on the subsequent episode of American Idol on April 18, 2006, as to whether or not he saw the imitation, admitted that he had and that the impression made him "fall out on the floor" with laughter.^[46]

"Weird Al" Yankovic parodied Hicks on his 2006 album, Straight Outta Lynwood, on a track called "Do I Creep You Out", which is set against the melody of "Do I Make You Proud". In the music video of the song, an animated Yankovic, dressed as Hicks, is portrayed as the stalker. The video can be seen on JibJab.^[47] Hicks is also known to perform Yankovic's version during soundchecks.

Talk show host Jay Leno frequently refers to Hicks as "his son" due to their striking gray-haired resemblance. Seacrest has also mentioned on American Idol that Hicks resembles Leno, Phil Donahue and George Clooney.^[46]

Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, promised to give political pundit Bill O'Reilly a copy of "Do I Make You Proud" upon O'Reilly's appearance on the show on January 18, 2007.^[48]

On the television sitcom The New Adventures of Old Christine, in the episode titled "The Real Thing", Christine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, mentions that she has an imaginary relationship with Taylor Hicks.^[49]

On April 1, 2011, Hicks made a surprise appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon during a cover of Rebecca Black's "Friday," which was being sung by Stephen Colbert. Jimmy Fallon hinted at his upcoming appearance by wearing a sweater with the label 'Soul Patrol' when appearing on stage.
