Katherine "Kate" Upton^[1] (born June 10, 1992)^[2] is an American model and actress known for her appearances in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue,^[4] first in 2011, when she was named Rookie of the Year,^[5] and again in 2012, when she was announced as the cover model.

Early life[link]

Upton was born in St. Joseph, Michigan^[6] and raised in Melbourne, Florida.^[7] She attended Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy.^[8] Her uncle is U.S. Representative Fred Upton, Republican of Michigan's 6th congressional district.^[9]

As a young equestrian, Upton showed at the American Paint Horse Association and competed on a national level.^[10] With her horse Roanie Pony, she won three APHA Reserve World Championships – 13 and Under Western Riding, 13 and Under Horsemanship, and 14–18 Western Riding. She was named the 13 and Under Reserve All-Around Champion, giving her a total of four reserve championships (2nd place). In addition, Upton ended up third overall on the APHA youth Top Twenty. With a second horse, Zipped, she won 14–18 Western Riding and was included in the top 5 in 14–18 Horsemanship and 14–18 Western Pleasure in 2009.^[11]

Upton attended a casting call in Miami for Elite Model Management in 2008^[6] and was signed by them the same day. She eventually moved to New York City, where she then signed with IMG Models.^[6]

Upton first modeled for Garage,^[6] then Dooney & Bourke. She is the 2010–11 face of Guess.^[12] In 2011, Upton appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She was featured in the body paint section and named Rookie of the Year for the issue.^[6] She has since modeled for Beach Bunny swimwear and Victoria's Secret,^[3] and has appeared in Complex^[13][14] and Esquire as "The Woman of the Summer".^[15]

In April 2011 an internet video of her doing the "Dougie" at a Los Angeles Clippers game went viral and served to increase her popularity.^[10][16][17] On April 30, 2012, a bikini-clad Upton performing the "Cat Daddy" in a video directed by Terry Richardson also went viral, amassing almost 750,000 views in the 24 hours before it was temporarily removed from YouTube for violating the site's rules on sexual content.^[18][19]

Upton made an appearance in a June 2011 episode of Tosh.0, participating in a segment called "Knife or Banana", emulating a Japanese game show in which she is stabbed with a banana.^[20]

Upton played in the 2011 Taco Bell All-Star Legends & Celebrity Softball Game at Chase Field in Phoenix, Arizona, in July 2011.^[21]

Irina Shayk (sometimes credited as Irina Sheik,^[1] born Irina Shaykhlislamova on January 6, 1986 in Yemanzhelinsk, Russia) is a Russian model known for her 2007 through 2012 appearances in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. She was the cover model for the 2011 issue.^[3]

Early years[link]

Shayk was born in Yemanzhelinsk, Russia. She says she inherited her unusual looks from her father and she has said that people often think she is South American. “My father was dark skinned, because he was Tatar, sometimes Tatars can look Brazilian,” she says. “I get my light eyes from my mother.”^[4] Shayk’s mother was a pianist who was the music teacher in a kindergarten and her father was a coal miner. She has one sibling, an older sister named Tatiana. Shayk started playing piano at age six. At age nine she enrolled in a music school and studied there for seven years, both playing the piano and singing in the choir since her mother wanted her to study music.^[5] Her father died of complications of pneumonia when she was 14, leaving her family with little money and forcing her mother to work two jobs to provide for the family.^[4]

After high school, Shayk studied marketing^[5] but was bored by it and entered a local beauty school with her elder sister. While there, she was noticed by a person from a local modeling agency who was struck by her unusual beauty. She was urged to participate in the "Miss Chelyabinsk 2004" beauty contest and she won.^[6]

Shayk started her career relatively late for a model, at the age of 19, when she began modeling in Paris. In 2007 she replaced Ana Beatriz Barros as the face of Intimissimi and in the same year debuted in the annual Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Since that time, she has appeared in every annual edition, attending photoshoots in such places as St. Petersburg, Naples, Grenada and Chile.

After being the image of Intimissimi for three years, Shayk was made the official ambassador for the brand in 2010.^[5][7] Her other modeling contracts include Beach Bunny (2009),^[8] and Guess spring/summer 2009.^[9] Other work include the Victoria's Secret catalog, Lacoste and Cesare Paciotti.^[10][1] Her magazine covers include Annabelle, Bolero, Woman, Jalouse, and Paris Capital.^[1]

She signed with modeling agency IMG on May 2009.^[11]

2010-present[link]

Shayk modeled the Armani Exchange spring/summer 2010 campaign.^[12] She also starred in Kanye West's “Power”, directed by artist Marco Brambilla.^[13] She was on the cover of Ocean Drive and GQ South Africa for the August issue.^[14][15] She ranked first in the "50 Hottest Russian Women" list by Complex magazine.^[16]

She made a change from swimwear to high fashion with a spread in Spain's Harper’s Bazaar and landed the cover of Elle Spain for their November 2010 issue.^[17] Glamour Spain awarded her "Best International Model of 2010".(Spanish: Mejor Modelo Internacional).^[18] At the end of the year she was pictured nude in the GQ Spain December issue; however, she claimed that she had not stripped for the photoshoot, and that the magazine had digitally altered the images to remove her lingerie.^[19]

On the February 14, 2011 episode of The Late Show with David Letterman, it was revealed via billboard that Shayk was the covermodel for the 2011 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. This is the fifth time she has been featured in the magazine, but the first time she has been on the cover. She is the first Russian to appear on the cover.^[20][21] Shayk became the face of swim label Luli Fama’s 2011 advertising campaign and look book.^[22][23] Appears in the John John Denim ad campaign.^[24]

She currently ranks 10th in the "Top 20 Sexiest Models" list on Models.com.^[25]

Shayk is helping a maternity hospital in her hometown of Yemanzhelinsk. She and her sister helped rebuild the children’s ward of the local hospital, and now Shayk raises money on behalf of a Russian charity, Pomogi, meaning "Help me" in Russian (Russian: Помоги), which provides care to sick children.^[4] Irina is the official ambassador for Pomogi charity in Russia.

Personal life[link]

Shayk has a pet dog named Caesare, after Julius Caesar,^[5] a Lab which, she claims, was fathered by one of the dogs who played the title role in the film Marley & Me.^[4]

Since May/Spring of 2010, she has been dating footballer Cristiano Ronaldo.^[28] Shayk and Ronaldo allegedly met through their Armani Exchange campaigns.

Decker was born in Kettering, Ohio, the daughter of Tessa (née Moore), a nurse, and Stephen Decker, a pacemaker salesman. She has one brother, Jordan, who is three years younger.^[3][4][5] She and her family moved to Middletown, Ohio, then to Matthews, North Carolina, a suburb of Charlotte. She was discovered in a Charlotte shopping mall as a teenager. Decker began her modeling career as the face of Mauri Simone, a popular prom dress maker.
