Hey, there! This is a series I've been wanting to do: Sega Genesis at 60 frames per second! Why? Well... have you ever watched an older game on YouTube and noticed the main character turn invisible when hit, or some other such nonsense? That's because some older games use some ridiculously high speed flicker effects to achieve those crazy hitflashes on bosses or that "ouch I'm hurt!" flicker! These are not displayed properly at 30 fps, but now that we're able to upload at 60 fps we can see all the special effects that older games would use! (They'll be smoother, too!)

End of the line, folks! Last stop: Shipwreck City! First we've got to escape this whale of a problem, though! Fortunately, Geppetto's been working out and can easily vault stone arches more'n his height! UNfortunately... I didn't know you can move the raft while in mid-air for the first bit of a while. So's I lose a bunch'a lives! Then the game FREEZES. Yeah... I had to play through the whole game up to this point again after that. Yeah..
Anyway! Game's Over folks! Hope you enjoyed this strange choice outta the Virgin/Disney team-up! See you another day!

Virgin Interactive is known for doing great things with their games, especially Disney-wise! This one though... this one... I didn't even know this one existed! And well, it's kinda, uh, haphazard, to put it nicely. You'll go through the Disney movie with totally random minigame-type things thrown in, like fighting fireflies as Jiminy, or riding a ROLLERCOASTER (???) at Pleasure Island. There's also a memorization game during the puppet show when you perform as Pinocchio.
Anyway, this game just feels like it coulda had a bunch more polish applied. I mean, it has some neat ideas and the animation is pretty good for the parts they focus on (Oddly, Pinocchio has Mickey's weird standing pose from Mickey Mania), but it just feels slightly incoherent/not... "good". I'm happy I gave it a go, though, Virgin Interactive makes solid stuff! It was crazy when I found out they made a PINOCCHIO game of all things! (And somehow I never knew about it!)

Some additional notes for those technically inclined:
This was captured from an original Sega Genesis system via composite output along with stereo sound to get as authentic a recording as possible. The Genesis used is one of the "good" models with proper sound and video output. Genesis can also output an RGB signal which is clearer, but I vetoed the idea because it breaks the dithering effect (color blending and transparencies) as seen here:

Also, the vast majority of people could not use the RGB signal even if they wanted to, so the experience they remember would be the composite signal as shown in this video.

The capture device I use is considered one of the most capable when it comes to older systems, but the Genesis' video signal still introduces some inconsistencies. Also, the original sega genesis resolution is, in essence, 240p at 60 frames per second. To take advantage of YouTube's higher bitrate offerings and to enable 60 fps I need to upscale that resolution to 1080p. There is also a step of video deinterlacing before that to create crisp video. That is a significant amount of video processing to the image, so I want to note that here as well.

Not a big fan of this level in the big whale, nope. You scrounge around looking for wood so as to build a conga line of barrels and stuff at the bottom which reaches a (somehow burning) lantern that you use to smoke yourself outta Monstro. Yeah. Just kinda a blah level.

Pinocchio is a 1940 American animated film produced by Walt Disney and based on the story The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. It is the second film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics, and was made after the success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. It was released to theaters by RKO Radio Pictures on February 7, 1940.
The plot of the film involves an old wood-carver named Geppetto who carves a wooden puppet named Pinocchio who is brought to life by a blue fairy, who tells him he can become a real boy if he proves himself "brave, truthful, and unselfish". Thus begin the puppet's adventures to become a real boy, which involve many encounters with a host of unsavory characters.
The film was adapted by Aurelius Battaglia, William Cottrell, Otto Englander, Erdman Penner, Joseph Sabo, Ted Sears, and Webb Smith from Collodi's book. The production was supervised by Ben Sharpsteen and Hamilton Luske, and the film's sequences were directed by Norman Ferguson, T. Hee, Wilfred Jackson, Jack Kinney, and Bill Roberts.

The journey of the puppet who wishes to be a real boy, now in pixellated form by Virgin Interactive on the SNES, was actually quite a decent short game and followed the movie earnestly so. Fortunately, Geppetto's been working out and can easily vault stone arches more'n his height! UNfortunately... I didn't know you can move the raft while in mid-air for the first bit of a while. So's I lose a bunch'a lives! Then the game FREEZES. Yeah... I had to play through the whole game up to this point again after that. Yeah..

Virgin Interactive is known for doing great things with their games, especially Disney-wise! This one though... this one... I didn't even know this one existed! And well, it's kinda, uh, haphazard, to put it nicely. You'll go through the Disney movie with totally random minigame-type things thrown in, like fighting fireflies as Jiminy, or riding a ROLLERCOASTER (???) at Pleasure Island. There's also a memorization game during the puppet show when you perform as Pinocchio.
Anyway, this game just feels like it coulda had a bunch more polish applied. I mean, it has some neat ideas and the animation is pretty good for the parts they focus on (Oddly, Pinocchio has Mickey's weird standing pose from Mickey Mania), but it just feels slightly incoherent/not... "good". I'm happy I gave it a go, though, Virgin Interactive makes solid stuff! It was crazy when I found out they made a PINOCCHIO game of all things! (And somehow I never knew about it!)

This was captured from an original Sega Genesis system via composite output along with stereo sound to get as authentic a recording as possible. The Genesis used is one of the "good" models with proper sound and video output. Genesis can also output an RGB signal which is clearer, but I vetoed the idea because it breaks the dithering effect (color blending and transparencies) as seen here:

Also, the vast majority of people could not use the RGB signal even if they wanted to, so the experience they remember would be the composite signal as shown in this video.

The capture device I use is considered one of the most capable when it comes to older systems, but the Genesis' video signal still introduces some inconsistencies. Also, the original sega genesis resolution is, in essence, 240p at 60 frames per second. To take advantage of YouTube's higher bitrate offerings and to enable 60 fps I need to upscale that resolution to 1080p. There is also a step of video deinterlacing before that to create crisp video. Hey, there! This is a series I've been wanting to do: Sega Genesis at 60 frames per second! Why? Well... have you ever watched an older game on YouTube and noticed the main character turn invisible when hit, or some other such nonsense? That's because some older games use some ridiculously high speed flicker effects to achieve those crazy hitflashes on bosses or that "ouch I'm hurt!" flicker! These are not displayed properly at 30 fps, but now that we're able to upload at 60 fps we can see all the special effects that older games would use! (They'll be smoother, too!)

Not a big fan of this level in the big whale, nope. You scrounge around looking for wood so as to build a conga line of barrels and stuff at the bottom which reaches a (somehow burning) lantern that you use to smoke yourself outta Monstro. Yeah. Just kinda a blah level.

Virgin Interactive is known for doing great things with their games, especially Disney-wise! This one though... this one... I didn't even know this one existed! And well, it's kinda, uh, haphazard, to put it nicely. You'll go through the Disney movie with totally random minigame-type things thrown in, like fighting fireflies as Jiminy, or riding a ROLLERCOASTER (???) at Pleasure Island. There's also a memorization game during the puppet show when you perform as Pinocchio.
Anyway, this game just feels like it coulda had a bunch more polish applied. I mean, it has some neat ideas and the animation is pretty good for the parts they focus on (Oddly, Pinocchio has Mickey's weird standing pose from Mickey Mania), but it just feels slightly incoherent/not... "good". I'm happy I gave it a go, though, Virgin Interactive makes solid stuff! It was crazy when I found out they made a PINOCCHIO game of all things! (And somehow I never knew about it!)

Some additional notes for those technically inclined:
This was captured from an original Sega Genesis system via composite output along with stereo sound to get as authentic a recording as possible. The Genesis used is one of the "good" models with proper sound and video output. Genesis can also output an RGB signal which is clearer, but I vetoed the idea because it breaks the dithering effect (color blending and transparencies) as seen here:

Also, the vast majority of people could not use the RGB signal even if they wanted to, so the experience they remember would be the composite signal as shown in this video.
There are a couple things to note about the quality of the video, however. Sega Genesis has a very dirty video signal that often "breaks" attempts to capture it with a capture device. The capture device I use is considered one of the most capable when it comes to older systems, but the Genesis' video signal still introduces some inconsistencies. These usually manifest where there are extremely thin lines in game, mostly the text, and in some other places as well. As a whole, it is more than manageable, but it is worth noting.
Also, the original sega genesis resolution is, in essence, 240p at 60 frames per second. To take advantage of YouTube's higher bitrate offerings and to enable 60 fps I need to upscale that resolution to 1080p. There is also a step of video deinterlacing before that to create crisp video. That is a significant amount of video processing to the image, so I want to note that here as well.

With Agrabah done, we move on to the next world. Sadly this ends up having us get swallowed by of all things... Monstro.
Where do I begin? The world isn't that bad but it's like a maze trying to reach where Pinocchio would be. If you watch the video, make sure you follow where I go. It makes it easy. We reach the Parasite Cage. The boss isn't that bad but Pinocchio's whining is enough to drive anyone nuts. Sheesh. Just focus your attacks on it and it'll go down. Riku will assist you so no worries.
Later the water lowers and you get access to the High Jump. This lets you ump higher and reach places you can't normally access. Very useful if you want to find those hard to reach treasures. We now focus on reaching Monstro's stomach and let me tell you, an angry Parasite Cage is enough to drive anyone nuts.
This time around he has two new attacks: one being a nasty bite attack and the other is spewing out acid. Holy crap that is nasty. If you get hit by the acid then let's just say you suffer poison damage. Just make sure you focus your offense carefully. Once you deal damage, it's mouth opens up and you can deal damage to a black orb. You can get HP orbs this way. It helps. Take your time with this fight and you'll do fine.
After the battle, you'll obtain Stop magic. It'll be helpful later down the road. Believe me. Oh and we get sneezed out of Monstro. Thank goodness.

A small game I encountered when young based on one of my absolute favourite Disney movies ever made. The journey of the puppet who wishes to be a real boy, now in pixellated form by Virgin Interactive on the SNES, was actually quite a decent short game and followed the movie earnestly so.
Though the soundtrack was nothing tremendous, the theme of Monstro's Stomach was the diamond of it all, a gloomy orchestral-synth theme that raises itself up with a stirringly sweet yearning of hope and freedom, something Pinocchio and his father Geppetto are also seeking in their desperate plan to escape the belly of the demonic whale.
