Hungary, Italy and Germany (The 1848 Revolutions Part 2)
http://www.zaneeducation.com - Hungary, Italy and Germany is Part 2 of The 1848 Revolutions - a 19th Century World History title.
Explore the social and economic forces that lay behind the revolutions of 1848 on the Continent, and study the role of nationalism and the political goals of the revolutionaries. Discover why an uprising in Paris against King Louis Philippe by the middle class sparked spontaneous revolts in Austria, Hungary, Italy, and the German state of Prussia. Outline the main stages and see the pattern of events common to the revolutions of 1848. Explain how the French Revolution inspired the growth of liberalism throughout Europe and the social protest against autocratic monarchies and authoritarian governments. Understand how the Industrial Revolution and the growth of the middle class nurtured the public desire for social reform, national independence, and representative government. Discuss how the powerful forces of the "old" Europe crushed the revolutions of 1848.

The Hungarian Revolution of 1848 was one of many of the European Revolutions of 1848 and closely linked to other revolutions of 1848 in the Habsburg areas. The revolution in the Kingdom of Hungary grew into a war for independence from the Austrian Empire, ruled by the Habsburg monarchy.
Many of its leaders and participants, including Lajos Kossuth, István Széchenyi, Sándor Petőfi, Józef Bem, are among the most respected national heroes in Hungarian history. The anniversary of the Revolution's outbreak, 15 March, is one of Hungary's three national holidays.

Egyházi műveinek zöme ebben a római korszakban született, több magyar vonatkozású.

Liszt was Hungarian of origin and he wrote this music when he heard that the revolution in Hungary was overthrown, Prime minister Batthyány was executed with his fellow generals and high ranking officers.
The revolution in the Kingdom of Hungary grew into a war for independence from Habsburg rule.
General Windischgrätz and 70,000 troops were sent to Hungary to crush the last challenge to the Austrian Empire.
In June 1849 Russian and Austrian troops entered Hungary heavily outnumbering the Hungarian army.
Julius Jacob von Haynau, the leader of the Austrian army who then became governor of Hungary for a few months of retribution, ordered the execution of 13 leaders of the Hungarian army in Arad and the Prime minister Batthyány in Pest. (wikipedia)

Görgey was not court-martialed, as his generals were, but kept in confinement at Klagenfurt. He lived there, chiefly employed in chemical work, until 1867, when he was pardoned and returned to Hungary. The surrender, and particularly the fact that his life was spared while his generals and many of his officers and men were hanged or shot, led to his being accused of treason by public opinion. After his release he played no further part in public life.
In 1885, an attempt by a large number of his old comrades to rehabilitate him was not favorably received in Hungary. After some years work as a railway engineer he retired to Visegrád, where he lived in retirement. For decades he had been considered a traitor, often humiliated in public places, but in the last years of his life, his very important role during the War and unique military talent became widely acknowledged by his compatriots.

Josef Bem was a Polish general, an Ottoman Pasha and a national hero of Poland and Hungary. Josef Bem was entrusted with the defence of Transylvania at the end of 1848, and in 1849, as General of the Székely troops, he performed miracles with his little army, notably at the bridge of Piski on February 9, where, after fighting all day, he drove back an immense force of pursuers.
