Rev. Patrick Brontë's Biographical Letter to Mrs.Gaskell
The Reverend Patrick Brontë pens an informative letter to, Mrs. Gaskell, the first biographer of his world-famous writer daughter the peerless prose-stylist Charlotte. Since, at Mr. Nicholls' request and mine, you have kindly consented to give a brief account of my Daughter Charlotte's life, I will state a few facts, which, as her biographer, you might wish to know. For the gratification of those who might be desirous of knowing anything of me - I will, in as few words as I can, gratify their curiosity. My father's name, was Hugh Brontë - He was a native of the South of Ireland, and was left an orphan at an early age - It was said that he was of an Ancient Family. Whether this was, or was not so, I never gave myself the trouble to inquire, since his lot in life, as well as mine, depended, under providence, not on family decent, but our own exertions. He came to the North of Ireland, and made an early, but suitable marriage. His pecuniary means were small - but renting a few acres of land, He and my mother, by dint of application, and industry, managed to bring up a family of ten Children, in a respectable manner. I shew'd an early fondness for books, and continued at school for several years - At the age of sixteen, knowing that my Father could afford me no pecuniary aid I began to think of doing something for myself - I therefore opened a public school - and in this line, I continued five or six years ; I was then a Tutor in a gentleman's Family - From which situation I ...

Cardiff Morris dance The Bell at Evesham National Morris Weekend, 16th June 2012.
Bell was the surname that the Brontë sisters used to publish their works. Brontë actually comes from an Irish clan: Ó Pronntaigh. In England this was often Anglicised to Prunty or Brunty. it is thought that Patrick Brontë, the sisters' father, added the 'diaeresis' (ie double dots) over the final 'e' in the family name. The double dots emphasise that the surname has 2 syllables rather than one. Why he chose to do so is open to speculation. perhaps he wanted the surname to sound posher, perhaps he wanted to associate the family with the cyclops Brontes (Patrick Brontë was a classical scholar). The cyclops Brontes was a son of the god Uranus, and his name meant 'The Thunderer' (his brother was Steropes whose name meant 'Lightening'). The three Brontë sisters, Emily, Charlotte and Anne, chose to publish their writings under the names Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell (pretending that they were brothers). In doing so the sisters were able to keep their own initials.

Thornton St James Old Bell Chapel Cemetery Graveyard War Graves West Yorkshire WW1 & WW2 2010
A wonderfully restored cemetery in the West Yorkshire Village of Thornton. A perfect example of what can be done with people power and community spirit. As much a part of the Bronte history as the story in Haworth, Patrick Bronte was curate at the Old Bell Chapel between 1815 and 1820, his children were born in Thornton. The Bronte family later moved on to Haworth Parsonage.

PRAYER (the Brontës)' OUR (Worth) FATHER TAUGHT US - Lord's Prayer Parody
Immersion reading Spoof version of The Lord's Prayer as re-imaDjinned delivered to describe the Reverend Patrick Brontë by "No. 1 Son" (Patrick) Branwell. He sounds like he's in the cellar (if NOT the Sellar('s)) - and not "his cups" ; the DUMPS - perhaps, but the thumps of "the dumps" is always the ("Beat") beat (replete in the) heart of art.

SuTCo: Brontë trailer
'Brontë' by Polly Teale 22nd - 25th February 2012 The Drama Studio, Glossop Road Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Brontë are three of the most well-known sisters in literary history. Not only did they write some of the most outstanding literature to come out of the Victorian era, but they did it all in isolation on the wet and windy Yorkshire Moors. Written and directed first in 2005 by Polly Teale, this play explores the lives and relationships of the Brontë family. We see the real and imagined worlds of these women, as their fictional characters are lifted from the page and brought to life; to haunt both them, and the audience. As we move back and forth in time to recount scenes from their lives, which are documented as well as imagined by the author, we learn how these sisters were affected by their desperate desire to escape from such a mundane reality. The men in their lives are protective, but also destructive. Their father Patrick hopes for nothing but his children's success, whilst their brother Branwell spirals into alcoholism and insanity following his failures. This play finally gives us the opportunity to understand how these three lonely Victorian sisters came to write some of the most powerful and passionate fiction of all time.
