NYC Fact: New York's smallest island
U Thant Island is only 100 by 200 feet. You can't go -- the only inhabitants it has, for a couple early summer months, are cormorants (seen in the video). But Robert Reid of Lonely Planet pointed it out on a recent ride on the East River Ferry, the easiest way to get near it.

Busfanning from Tudor City
Here we are in Tudor City, above 42nd Street between 1st and 2nd Avenue. In the span of 4 minutes and 45 seconds, we see 12 TA buses. I am not going to list every bus I saw but here is a short rundown. I saw an Orion VII next generation bus, along with some New Flyer Artics on the M104, some RTS's on the M42 and M5, an MCI on the X17J, and a few other buses, whose routes I am unsure of. In the distant background, we see Queens, as well as U Thant Island (also known as Belmont Island, which is the small rock outcropping with a warning light for ships) just off of the Manhattan shore in the East River. We also see the UN building. Enjoy the view of all the buses and the other bits of scenery. Happy St. Patrick's Day. If you have any questions about the video, feel free to message me. Comments are welcome. The video was taken on March 17th, 2009.

Gunships Save UN from Circle Line, by InnerCityPress.com
Beside the UN Thursday afternoon just after Ahmadinejad's speech partially cleared the General Assembly, a Circle Line ship full of tourists approached on the East River. It was on the U-Thant Island side of the river. Two gun-equipped boats that had been patrolling -- and racing -- for days sped over and cut off the Circle Line. As tourists craned to see, the Circle Line slowly turned around and headed south. Another security threat was averted. Was this bonus tourism or bogus communications?

August 5, 1963 - Nuclear Test Ban Treaty signed in Moscow, Russia
The Treaty was signed in Moscow on August 5, 1963, by US Secretary Dean Rusk, Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko, and British Foreign Secretary Lord Alec Douglas- Home-- one day short of the 18th anniversary of the dropping of an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The large American delegation included Adlai E. Stevenson, Senators JW Fulbright, Democrat of Arkansas; George D. Aiken, Republicans of Vermont; Leverett Saltonstall, Republican of Massachusetts; John J. Sparkman, Democrat of Alabama; Hubert H. Humphrey, Democrat of Minnesota, and John O. Pastore, Democrat of Rhode Island, and Ambassador to the Soviet Union. Over the next two months, President Kennedy convinced a fearful public and a divided Senate to support the Treaty. The Senate approved the Limited Nuclear Test Ban on September 23, 1963, by an 80-19 margin. Kennedy signed the ratified Treaty on October 7, 1963.

UNU interview with Ms. Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, COP16 Chair
Ms. Patricia Espinosa Cantellano, Mexico's secretary of foreign affairs and the chair of COP16, spoke at UNU July fifth on Mexico's preparations for the COP16 climate summit to be held in Cancún later this year.
As the host country for the 16th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Mexico is determined to push for substantive agreements from all parties.
Ms. Espinosa's lecture followed Mexican president Felipe Calderón's February U Thant Distinguished Lecture at UNU Headquarters in which the president emphasized the need to rebuild confidence and trust following the disappointing COP 15 climate summit in Copenhagen last December.
In her lecture, Ms. Espinosa stressed the need for inclusive dialogue, especially with least developed countries, island states, and the private sector, as a key component in the quest for a binding agreement in Cancún.
Prior to her lecture, Ms. Espinosa met with UNU Rector Konrad Osterwalder to discuss the COP process and UNU's role.
