Eocene Epoch - Florida Fossils: Evolution of Life and Land
This video from the Museum's Florida Fossils exhibit describes the Eocene, 55 million to 34 million years ago. During this period, lush tropical forests blanketed much of the world's landmasses and oceans were generally warmer than today. Florida was underwater with a rich mosaic of shallow and deeper water habitats on a submerged limestone platform. The coastlines of southeastern North America were patrolled by large predators, including sharks, crocodilians and primitive toothed whales called archaeocetes, while four-legged, primitive sea cows waded and swam in the shallows. Tropical ocean currents bathed the carbonate banks marine habitats. The Tethys Sea provided an east-west throughway for dispersal of sea creatures and plants from far and wide. Produced, directed and filmed for the Florida Museum of Natural History by Wes C. Skiles/Karst Productions, Inc.

Eocene Invasion: Darwinius
Charlie Darwinius the Eocene primate is causing trouble in the JOIDES Resolution's core lab! Who took my sample? Darwinius has a skeleton very similar to modern day lemurs with additional primate-like characteristics. It is believed to have lived close to when lemurs and modern primate's branched apart in the primate family tree. Darwinius had grasping hands, opposable thumbs, and digits with nails instead of claws. A fossil found in Germany still had remains of its last meal in its stomach-- fruit, seeds, and leaves. Eocene Invasion: Hyracotherium
Horatio Hyracotherium is missing the Eocene - let's see what earth was like 55 million years ago and figure out how this little guy turned into modern horses! Hyracotherium was an ancestor to horses, tapirs, and rhinos. It was small in stature, only about two feet tall, but was heavy for it's size (maybe up to 50 pounds). Hyracotherium was an herbivore and lived in sheltered woodlands. This horse relative had yet to develop hooves, instead it had paws similar to a dog. They had four toes in the front, and three in the back! Fossil Hyracotherium are found in the Northern Hemisphere.
