Downhill highlights @UCI Mountain Bike World Cup 2012
The Gravity series for the RockyRoads UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano returned on Sunday with round two in Val di Sole, Italy, and both the men's and women's competitions saw dominating performances by the winners. Rachel Atherton (GT Factory) beat the rest of the women's field by nearly five seconds, while 2011 World Cup Champion Aaron Gwin (Trek World Racing) was almost eight seconds ahead of his nearest competitor in the men's race. Val di Sole is known for its highly technical, rough and dusty track, and this year was no different, with new sections of the course buried under soft, loamy dirt that was nearly 30 centimeters deep in places. Sabrina Jonnier (Labyrinth Shimano) was the first woman to spend an extended time in the Hot Seat, but she was then bumped out of contention by a pair of Austrian riders - Anita Molcik (Four Elements) and Petra Bernhard (Alpine Commencal Austria) - before a trio of French riders took the top spot in quick succession, with Myriam Nicole (Commencal/Riding Addiction) the first to break the four minute barrier. However, Nicole's reign at the top was brief, with Atherton the next rider on course. Atherton, the World Champion here in Val di Sole in 2008, and coming back from a shoulder injury that derailed most of last season and saw her missed the opening round this year, was noticeably faster than any other woman, finishing 4.485 seconds ahead of Nicole. Minnaar digs deep to scoop emotional win at UCI MTB downhill World Cup victory Pietermaritzburg - Hometown hero Greg Minnaar sent the massive crowd into hysterical celebrations by winning the downhill title at the RockyRoads UCI MTB World Cup, while Australian speedster Tracey Hannah completed a fairytale comeback to MTB downhill racing by winning the women's title in emphatic fashion at the Cascades MTB course. Minnaar, fronting the Santa Cruz Syndicate team, started last as the quickest qualifier, and initially looked behind the blisteringly fast time laid down by seasoned Australian star Mick Hannah and who looked poised to make it a family one-two after his sister had scooped the women's title. However 30 year old Minnaar, who won here in 2009, had to dig deep over the tough final third of the course to make up two crucial seconds to finish six tenths of a second faster than Gwinn, sending the crowd into raptures. His race was far from perfect however. A clearly nervous Minnaar missed a few key lines and went wide into the big drop at Cloud 9, leaving him off Gwin's pace. The women's title race ended in a heady victory for comeback kid Tracey Hannah, the former junior world champ, making a comeback to downhill racing after a four year layoff. Starting last after posting the fastest time in qualifying, Hannah scorched down the lower section of the course to complete her dream return to the gravity discipline after a four year layoff. Over 20.000 spectators in Val di Sole for the final stage of the 2011 World Cup Aaron Gwin wins the last race and the Cup Tracy Moseley comes in 5th and wins the overall Italy's Val di Sole has celebrated today the new Downhill World Cup champions Aaron Gwin and Tracy Moseley. The American rider had already wrapped up his first World Cup title in France at the beginning of August, but wanted to prove anyway that this year is absolutely unstoppable. Today he finished his race run with an astonishing time of 3mins and 10 seconds, more than 1.2 seconds over the fast time set by British Danny Hart, and over 41 km/h average speed. Gee Atherton of the UK, the 2008 World Champion in Val di Sole, jumped on the third step of the podium. Tracy Moseley drove quite cautiously, especially in the third section of the course, and finished 5th. The last race of the 2011 World Cup season was won by French national champion Myriam Nicole, ahead of countrywoman Floriane Pugin and Rachel Atherton of the UK. Despite this, Moseley earned enough points to eventually grab her second world cup title in career (the first was in 2006). Among Juniors, Troy Brosnan of Australia and Manon Carpenter of the UK won the overall standings. This morning, the Junior XC race took place in Val di Sole, and both Jolanda Neff (SUI) and Anton Cooper (NZL) easily won their respective race.
