The East India Company.mov
The East India Company was the worlds first multinational company, dominating world trade for centuries. Their merchants traded fabrics, spices, tea coffee and crafts, bought distant ports closer and help blend and introduce distant cultures. The company developed administrative systems, signed treaties, fought wars with kingdoms and set up an empire far larger than the small island from which it came.

In East India Company, players will assume the role of Governor Director of one of the East India Companies or other rival companies. There are eight nationalities to choose from: British, Dutch, French, Danish, Portuguese, Swedish, Italian or Spanish with the goal of bringing new colonies and wealth such as: tea, spices, gold, diamonds and other precious cargo back to Europe, but they must dominate the other rival empires along the way. Wars will be waged and blood will be spilled. Players will also conquer the open sea and explore 40 different cities, towns and villages. Starting modestly, you will build your fleet, establish connections to far away countries, and keep the rivaling nations at bay. Choose from an array of ship classes and types of transport and military vessels: small sloops, schooners, brigantines, frigates and ship-of-the-line. Create different fleets and assign them to specific trading routes. Controlling well situated ports and upgrading them is one key to success. Conflicts and wars are inevitable. When hostile fleets engage each other, the spectacular naval battles are fought at a real-time tactical level. Devastating broadsides are fired with a deafening roar and cannon balls tear through enemy ships and their crew. SILENCE OF DEATH directed by Mani Nasry (16MM FILM) 1ST YEAR RYERSON UNIVERSITY STUDENT FILM
IMDB PAGE
www.imdb.me/maninasry
This Scene expresses- FEAR- noun: an emotion experienced in anticipation of some specific pain or danger (usually accompanied by a desire to flee or fight). noun: a feeling of anxiety and agitation caused by the presence or nearness of danger, evil, pain, etc.; timidity; dread; terror; fright; apprehension. Terrify not your soul with vain imaginary fears. By realizing that you are the one feeding the fire, you can start to take control of your fears. Panic is a vicious cycle that can be broken. When you start to have irrational fears you need to take action quick. Eleanor Roosevelt once said: "You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing, which you think you cannot do." We must stop running away from things that frighten us, face our fears head on, and do the thing we fear the most. Most of the time we'll find out that the "thing" was not that scary after all. Our imaginations had behaved like a super fertilizer and grown a grotesque monstrosity in our minds. Remember, our imaginations are incredibly powerful. They can work against us, creating horrible images that leave us paralyzed with fear and they can also work for us, building a world where everything we do is an adventure, a miracle. And the most amazing thing is that we hold the power to control our minds - we allow fear to dominate our lives or we choose to dominate fear. Those are our only two choices.

The Ship-boys of Bontekoe (De Scheepsjongens van Bontekoe) | vfx making-of (2007) | PLANET X FX
This reel is an abridged selection of the many visual effects PLANET X FX created for 'De Scheepsjongens van Bontekoe' ('The Ship-boy of Bontekoe').
During a 4 month period all the 3D and 2D components necessary to bring the 17th century East India Company ship to life were created. An entire 3D replica of the 'Nieuw Hoorn' formed the basis for many shots depicting the ship on open stormy seas practically impossible to shoot on a set.
With photo realism being the main goal, the ship was constructed from scratch using the original blueprints of the Batavia. Also the tiniest motions and behaviors of the entire rigging and sails were set up using special dynamic systems. The same goes for the turbulent swells on which some of the stormy scenes take place: a 3D sea was custom designed for this project.
Also in the field of 2D composting a significant contribution was made. Apart from processing the entire 3D share a significant effort went into matte-paintings, various removals, day for-night-shots and the adding of several elements to the 2D track.
A green screen shoot was especially set up for post production. In this shot several actors climbed in to a mock mast with rigging so that they could be superimposed on to the background in the 3D scenes featuring the ship. Thus further obscuring the boundaries between life-action and computer generated.
The press especially was extremely positive about the total look and visual effects in the movie:
'The special effects used to unleash a gigantic storm on the silver screen have an international allure'
--Sp!ts
'Reality has its boundaries, even though you don't notice it as a member of the audience. The storms that ravage the Batavia are beautiful just as the drowning scenes'
--De Telegraaf
'With the help of impressive visual effects the ship has to withstand cape storms, scurvy, corporal punishment and fires on its voyage to the east indies'
--FilmFocus.nl

The Dutch East Indies Company - The First 100 Years - Dr Thomas Crump
Dr Thomas Crump moved to Amsterdam in 1972 to take up an appointment in the University's Social Sciences Faculty, which occupies the original corporate headquarters of the VOC - the Dutch East Indies Company. His interest in the VOC goes back to 1980, when he set up a research project in Japan, where, for a period of more than 200 years, starting in the mid-17th century, the Company enjoyed a complete monolopy of foreign trade granted by the ruling shoguns. This was a extension of its successful exploitation of the wealth of the East Indies during the 16th and 17th centuries.
In the first hundred years, by facing off all its european rivals - where necessary by force of arms - the company brought unprecedented wealth to the Netherlands. This will be the subject of the first lecture.

The Dutch East Indies Company: The Second 100 Years - Thomas Crump
This second lecture will focus on the VOC's second hundred years and will explain hows it slowly lost out on almost everything it had gained, to become bankrupt by the end of the 18th century - ending a remarkable period in the history of European colonialism.

Marjiet Omar and the Golden City Dixies - Nellie Gray (±1957)
From the time the Dutch East India Company established their first outpost at the Southern tip of Africa to 1808 (when the British abolished the slave trade) around 63000 slaves were brought into the Cape Colony. To avoid trouble with the local Khoikhoi people, South Africa's slaves were obtained mainly from Indonesia, Madagascar, and India. After the slaves were freed a great number of people of mixed heritage intermingled with the Europeans, remnants of the Khoikhoi, and some Xhosa, to create what became known as the "Coloured" (as opposed to Black) people of South Africa. en.wikipedia.org Disadvantaged from the beginning, Apartheid created additional hardship for these folks. However, on the "Tweede Nuwejaar" (Second New Year = January 2nd, which was originally a day off for the farm workers in the Cape) they cast their troubles away and formed groups of "Kaapse Klopse" (Cape Minstrel Bands) which would swarm the city of Cape Town in their brightly colored outfits. Their "Goema" (Dixieland) style of music and merry performances won the hearts of many, and this was the one day in which they would board "whites only" busses and trains and could get away with it -- as long as the ride included a performance. As a white Afrikaner kid growing up in Cape Town I remember those days fondly; however it was not only me who was taken by their music -- soon many of their minstrel songs (eg "So lank as die Rietjie in die Water Lê", "Kossies van die Kaap", "Sousboontjies", etc ...
