Roman Forum and Roman Colosseum, Rome Italy
Italy Rome. The Roman Forum is located in a valley that is between the Palatine hill and the Capitoline hill. It originally was a marsh, but the Romans drained the area and turned it into a center of political and social activity. The Forum was the marketplace of Rome and also the business district and civic center. It was expanded to include temples, a senate house and law courts. When the Roman Empire fell, the Forum became forgotten, buried and was used as a cattle pasture during the Middle Ages. The Colosseum or Flavian Amphitheater was begun by Vespasian, inaugurated by Titus in 80 AD and completed by Domitian. Located on marshy land between the Esquiline and Caelian Hills, it was the first permanent amphitheater to be built in Rome. Its monumental size and grandeur as well as its practical and efficient organization for producing spectacles and controlling the large crowds make it one of the great architectural monuments achieved by the ancient Romans. k where do i begin?!!
this summer has been incredibly busy, from vancouver, to miami, to sydney, to hawaii, to niagara falls (haha k this is only a 200km drive) shooting weddings, teaching workshops, shooting corporate promos + commercials and of course shooting more weddings.
things are taking longer then expected but b4 i launch my website + 2010 highlights; i want to quickly share with you the first ever myw multi day south asian wedding that i attended this past weekend.
while i've had the oppurtunity to shoot hindu and sikh indian weddings in the past this was the first time i've shot a 5 day (yes 5 day) Ismaili wedding; and i sure had a TON of learning to do. I was up with farzana + shameer @ their place (luckly they live 2 mins away from me!! hehe) till 5 am, after a 4 hour pre-wedding consultation to learn exactly all of the different rituals, ceremonies, scarves, certain drinks that have cultural/religious/mythological significance to them and their culture. needless to say my head pretty much exploded but i was pumpppppeed to make this happen.
and while its hard to not notice, farzana + shameer are obviously a stunning looking couple, but they are also super warm, down to earth, approachable, caring and just all around awesome!!! their bridal party, friends and family were supppper amazing as well.
i REALALLLLLLYY love you guys!!! thank you for having me document your wedding.
TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
- being a multi-day event requiring many symmetrical ceremonies happening @ the same time, I contracted my internationally acclaimed wedding cinematographer/educator/best friend konrad czystowski to help me shoot the events that i couldnt personally shoot myself due to logistical limitations. one of the most important lessons l learned from internationally acclaimed ray roman while teaching @ his workshop in miami a month ago; was that he stressed how important it is to build solid relationships with great, honest and genuine ppl who can help us in our journey in this industry. in turn, konrad brings me to shoot a wedding with him in hawaii... WOOHOO!!!
now to give you an idea of how much work was involved in this weddng, here is a breakdown.
-WEDNESDAY henna ceremony - shot by myw + 1 5D mkii. the ceremony was 6 hours.
-THURSDAY henna ceremony for the bridesmaids + women from the grooms side of the family. this is the day where the siblings of both the bride and groom goto the mosque and fill up the guri with holy water and bring it back home for the bride and groom to bathe in it. various other ceremonies (egging of the groom, eating of butter chicken (heheh), more to be explained below) also occur on thursday as well. i would say this was another 7 hours or so. both Konrad and myself used one Canon 5D mkII to cover everything. konrad @ groom's house while I was at the brides.
-FRIDAY this was the day the bride and groom, as well as both their respective families get to finally meet and see eachother, this was @ a reception gathering. I shot this mostly myself with Konrad helping out for 3 hours. Total amount of time I would say I was shooting on and off was another 10 hours.
-SATURDAY this was the break day where no shooting was involved and I basically went through a good 30 hours of footage and edited + transcoded between multiple machines straight an entire day (and night). Konrad's pre sequenced and rough-cut timelines were a huge help in making this possible.
-SUNDAY I marched on the big wedding day on SUNDAY without a single second of sleep. Yes I almost cried in agony from editing during the middle of the night. Nevertheless, Konrad was at my house 7:45am, and the worlds busiest/most talented 16 year old boy wonder cinematographer Mark Klassen arrived too, and my trusty protege from scratch and Troy Turgano also helped with the editing duties all day. This wedding day ran from 8 am to about 1am, and had 2 sets of preps, 2 first meetings, 2 photosessions, 1 wedding ceremony and 1 wedding reception.
this piece was shot entirely with Canon 5DmkII's in 24p mode.
there is no doubt that the 5Dmkii currently provides the highest value/dollar HDSLR in event filmmaking industry today. it is better then the 7D due to it's full frame capabilities, cleaner low light and richer color reproduction. when i compare the 5d to the 1dmk4; I do notice that the 1dmk4 is better in low light, and the 1dmk4's crop factor is better in certain cases (removing mild vignetting in some lenses as well as removing the less sharp image characteristics @ the edges of an image); but for the price of a single 1dmk4, i can purchases 2 5dmkii's. it's a complete no brainer.
- as both konrad and I taught in sydney australia 2 weeks ago and did a

ok wow its been a while (yet again).
this wedding was one of my first 2010 weddings (yet another one which prevented me from partying the weekend of my birthday *ROAR*) but nonetheless it was an incredible experience having met, befriended and worked with paulina + michael.
paulina is a romantic at heart and from the onset having met her i knew that their wedding story would be driven strongly by voiceovers and a more heartfelt and slower soundtrack.
this more traditional approach which most of my couples (or the industry for that matter) has been opting against these past few years; has almost become obsolete in the international circuit of wedding films.
but i find that by being challenged by a different style and approach, it forces and teaches one to be become a more flexible, discrete, yet refined storyteller.
one must have to look deeper into the day, the couples emotions and feelings vs relying on ridiculous cinematic destination wedding visuals to maintain audience interest.
and while it's impossible not to notice the bride (you too studly michael), the stunning paulina has been modeling for over 14 years, and is currently is represented by NEXT Toronto. You may have seen her face across international and domestic ads for buffalo jeans, coors light, le senza, jacob, dentine gum, winners, etc eTC ETC EC across north america to as far as japan, ny, taiwan spain etc etC ETC ETC. it was super kewl when talking to paulina as i do remember seeing her in the 7up super bowl commercial that played a few years back.
enough rambing; watch, inhale, learn, enjoy + cry as you wish.
TECHNICAL + PRODUCTION TIDBITS for my industry friends and colleagues.
shot with the freshest of the fresh socks out there, my polish brother and best friend konrad czyswtoski with help from the youngest film prodigy of all time; mark a klassen.
cameras used:
2 Canon 5dmkii's for most of the day
2 Canon 7ds for the ceremony bride and groom angles.
everything shot in 24p mode, unless I was running steadicam in some cases where I deliberately slowed things down to 30p -> 24p 80% for a more dreamlike look + feel for certain shots.
this wedding was shot before employing ultra flat low contrast and desaturated profiles for our 5d's. hence i reluctantly admit that color correcting this piece and matching 5ds+7ds was more of a pain in butt then usual; due to a more saturated and crushed images from the camera.
COLOR CORRECTION via combination of fcp rgb balance, 2-way + 3-way colour correcter + newbluefx + modified ancient mb filters.
i seem to be creating more and more custom profiles as I go along to accommodate different exposure/lighting situations that we sorely have to face in the world of event filmmaking.
i will be EXTENSIVEly ripping into and breaking down the topic of color correction at every workshop I teach this year. camera matching, defining what is a 'solid' image and how to achieve it; the WHY, WHY NOT, and equally importantly HOW and HOW ELSE will be addressed in painstaking + meticulous detail. I'll try to throw up a sample on thefilmfoundry twitter tonight.
my glass used:
-zeiss 35/2 zf,
-zeiss 50/2 makro zf,
-zeiss 21/2.8 zf,
-zeiss makro 100/2
-canon 24-70 2.8 on the steadicam pilot
-canon 14mm 2.8 rectilinear on the 7d for fake balcony wide shots.
-canon 70-200 2.8 IS V1
(i stupidly sold my zeiss 50 1.4 around this time before having to buy it back)
konrad's glass used:
-canon 50/1.2 L, canon 24/1.4 L II
-canon 70-200 2.8 IS V1
STABILIZATION tools were handled cinevate atlas 30, manfrotto monopod 561hdv (this is an INCREDIBLE tool) at the BEST price ($300), the 561 serves as a tripod, a fake slider, a fake crane, a fake car/boat mount etc etc etc. just use your imagination and the sky is the limit with this badboy.
STEADICAM; my Steadicam abilities (or lack off) performed the steadicam duties for the photosession on my trusty almost 3 year old (ALREADY) steadicam pilot.
this film is the revised sde, i'll be posting a the reactions from the couple for the sde on the wedding night in a day or two from now.
as always, thank you so much for watching, reading, emails, well wishes across the various forums and online community in these past months, and THANK YOU LOL from the industry who tell me they visit my vimeo all the time to look for my new work(s) and and those whom FB me to tell me to post something new. =)
i swear i have like 200 films hidden on vimeo; just sooooo many different projects to juggle.
can't wait for a wedding and a workshop in Honolulu; hawaii; really really need a vacation.

Marriage is a Love Laboratory
No matter how much we were in love with each other, there will come a time when we think to ourselves: "I love my husband or spouse, but I don’t feel in love." In fact many people come to a place where they may even say, "I don’t think I love my spouse anymore."
The reason is quite simple.
Most of us get married to be loved, not to learn how to love. I know you are probably reacting to that statement. I was convinced I was the best person in the whole world to love my wife. God had given her to me and I was the one who could love her best. I soon discovered there were some things my wife did that I did not know how to love. I soon discovered that my love was selfish. Along with my attempts to love her came my disappointment when she did not love me the way I expected. I discovered my love was rooted in selfishness.
Our reasons for marriage usually have some flavor of selfishness, usually because we believe we will be better off, they will provide for me, they will give me what I need.
Any marriage that begins with some semblance of selfishness (don’t they all?) will be in for some kind of adjustment. At some point your spouse will fail to do something which we expected or counted on. At some point we will encounter disappointment and even hurt because something we counted on did not get done.
Marriage confronts our biggest sin – Pride.
We all bring pride into our marriage, and because of our pride, we have expectations and those expectations will be disappointed, because our spouse also has pride and selfishness.
Melittledina posted this on askmehelpdesk forum, where you can ask experts anything:
I've been with my spouse for now 5 1/2 years. We have two girls. Oldest is 4 years old and the youngest is 2 years old. I am UNHAPPY in my relationship. The first year we where together, when I was pregnant with are first, I discovered that he was sending pornographic photos of himself and his ex-girl-friend on the internet "Live sex chat". I forgave him. After, I discovered that he stole money that we had for the rent and lied to me about it until I caught him red handed. I forgave him. After, I discovered that he stole his best friend’s credit card. I forgive him. After I discovered that he stole money from his boss at work and he lost his job. I forgive him. Last October, I got a phone call from another woman. HE CHEATED on me! I left him. After 1 week, he tried to kill himself, so AGAIN I forgive him. I am so tired!!! I think today that I am with him only for my children... He is a good father to them. But I can’t live like this anymore. I've been thinking of cheating on him to get revenge but that won’t work. I just want him out of my life…
The experts told 'melittledina' she needs to divorce her no-good husband for the protection of the children. Obviously Christ was not in their family. Even if 'Melittledina' had been a Christian, she probably would have divorced her husband. She had discovered that he had serious character flaws. He was not meeting her expectations. She still loved him, but she was no longer in love...she wanted out of the marriage. She had married for love, but she did not marry to learn how to love such a seriously flawed man.
Most of us enter marriage with dreams and expectations. At one time we were active in our love for our spouse. Then, like 'melittledina', we start to see character flaws, some very serious. Then, disappointment, hurt, and bitterness build up stumblingblocks to our love.
What happened to my "Soul-Mate"
The truth is that we have this concept of “soul-mate” floating around our sub-conscious. Plato taught this before Christ was born, that somehow our souls were torn in two and there is someone out there with the other half of our soul. We get married because we think we have found our “soul-mate” and it is just so easy being around them. We have fun, we laugh, there is nothing forced about our relationship. We genuinely believe we have found the one God meant us to be married to the rest of our lives.
Love is largely a feeling that produces long conversations, walks in the park, long slow kisses, and gentle touches. Our feelings are magnified to the 'nth' degree. We are constantly floating on clouds.
Then we get married and life happens. Life is not easy, it is very difficult. The clouds evaporate, the long slow kisses become short little pecks, the walks in the park become falling asleep on the couch.
After months or years, as our disappointment grows and the trials increase, we find ourselves wondering about our “love” and where it went. You tell your friends that you still love your spouse, but the love has changed. The feelings are not there. You wonder about this “soul-mate” thing, especially when days go by without intimacy or involved conversation.
"Bride to Be" becomes the "Bride that Was"
Do you know the difference between the bride to be and the bride that was?
It’s not the veil, or the dress. It’s your att
