The Role of Red Blood Cells in Anemia
Watch this video to learn about how the body makes red blood cells, which contain hemoglobin and carry oxygen throughout the body. Anemia occurs when there are too few red blood cells or not enough hemoglobin. Find out more about anemia and other blood disorders by visiting ASH's patient resources webpage hematology.org This animation was featured in the documentary film "Blood Detectives." Iron Deficiency Anemia is a condition in which Blood lacks adequate Healthy Red Blood Cells, Medical
Definition Iron deficiency anemia is a common type of anemia — a condition in which blood lacks adequate healthy red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the body's tissues. As the name implies, iron deficiency anemia is due to insufficient iron. Without enough iron, your body can't produce enough hemoglobin, a substance in red blood cells that enables them to carry oxygen. As a result, iron deficiency anemia may leave you tired and short of breath. You can usually correct iron deficiency anemia with iron supplementation. Sometimes, additional treatments for iron deficiency anemia are necessary, especially if you're bleeding internally. Symptoms Initially, iron deficiency anemia can be so mild that it goes unnoticed. But as the body becomes more deficient in iron and anemia worsens, the signs and symptoms intensify. Iron deficiency anemia symptoms may include: Extreme fatigue Pale skin Weakness Shortness of breath Headache Dizziness or lightheadedness Cold hands and feet Irritability Inflammation or soreness of your tongue Brittle nails Fast heartbeat Unusual cravings for non-nutritive substances, such as ice, dirt or starch Poor appetite, especially in infants and children with iron deficiency anemia An uncomfortable tingling or crawling feeling in your legs (restless legs syndrome) When to see a doctor If you or your child develops signs and symptoms that suggest iron deficiency anemia, see your doctor. Iron deficiency anemia isn't something to self-diagnose or ...

Sickle Cell Anemia -- Hope from Gene Therapy
This inherited red blood cell disorder is the most common genetic disease in America, and one of the most painful and debilitating. Until now, bone marrow and cord blood transplants have been the only treatment available to patients, and matched donors are hard to find. But an experiment at Genetix in Cambridge, Massachusetts is raising hopes. By treating the bone marrow of mice with anti-sickling gene therapy, scientists saw great improvement in normal red blood production. All 50 Secrets of the Sequence videos have an accompanying classroom-tested lesson that encourages students to further explore the video topics. Each lesson includes background information, state and national science standards, discussion questions and answers, teacher notes and an activity that will ensure a hands-on, "minds-on" experience. Sickle Cell Anemia: A Patient's Journey
As a young child, Alexandria, now age 17, endured near-constant feelings of exhaustion and general sickness, which turned into severe pain at night. After experiencing a "silent stroke" as a young girl, Alexandria was diagnosed with sickle cell anemia, a disease in which the blood cells become deformed and unable to function properly. To learn more about SCA and other blood disorders, visit ASH's patient resources webpage hematology.org This clip was excerpted from the documentary film "Blood Detectives." Candida Yeast, Anemia and Anxiety
Candida is such a nasty parasitic yeast and once you get it and don't treat it right away it can make itself at home in your body living off of you and what you eat. Most people do not realize that their symptoms are a result of Candida and like me do nothing about it for many years. Going to a primary care physician about Candida can be very frustrating because they don't seem to be very informed about it. I asked my physician about this study that shows how Candida can cause anemia in its host by utilizing its iron for growth. jem.rupress.org To this day he has not gotten back to me. I also have anxiety issues that have resulted in obsessive compulsive disorder. Mainly about safety and having to wash my hands several times and check plugs and the stove to make sure they are not on. Anxiety and OCD can be a result of Candida or other digestive issues. Here is a study that found that giving Probiotic Treatment to chronic fatigue syndrome patients helped to reduce their anxiety. www.ctv.ca Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can also be a symptom of Candida Yeast www.naturalnews.com I just found it upsetting when I was asking the doctor about Candida Symptoms and Candida Treatment options that I was given a prescription for Prozac. Drugs for the anxiety and OCD would do nothing at treating the cause of my symptoms. It would just be a band aid solution. I urge everyone to be crusaders for their own health.

Iron Deficiency Anemia
In anemia, there is inadequate red blood cells to transport oxygen from the lungs to the tissues. Although there are many different types of anemia, the most common cause of anemia is due to excessive blood loss, leading to iron-deficiency anemia (IDA).

Sickle Cell
"Sickle cell anemia is a genetic disease that affects hemoglobin, the oxygen transport molecule in the blood. The disease gets its name from the shape of the red blood cells under low oxygen conditions. Some red blood cells become sickle-shaped and these elongated cells get stuck in small blood vessels so that parts of the body don't get the oxygen they need. Sickle cell anemia is caused by a single letter change in the DNA. This in turn alters one of the amino acids in the hemoglobin protein. Valine sits in a position where glutamic acid should be. The valine makes the hemoglobin molecules stick together when oxygen tension is low, forming long fibers that distort the shape of the red blood cells, and this brings on an attack."
