British Cyprus/The Sovereign British Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia
The Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia are two UK-administered areas on the island of Cyprus that comprise the Sovereign Base Areas military bases of the United Kingdom. The bases were retained by the UK following the granting of independence and the eventual transition of Cyprus from a crown colony to an independent sovereign state. The United Kingdom demanded and succeeded in continuing to occupy a portion of Cyprus in the form of military bases because of the strategic location of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea in pursuit of UK interests.
The bases are split into Akrotiri / Ακρωτήρι / Agrotur, along with Episkopi Garrison, is part of an area known as the Western Sovereign Base Area or WSBA. Dhekelia / Δεκέλεια / Dikelya, along with Ayios Nikolaos, is part of the Eastern Sovereign Base Area or ESBA.

Aftermath of Cyprus explosion 12.07.11
Schools remain closed across all four British military bases in Cyprus following yesterday's explosion that knocked out the island's largest power station. Twelve people were killed in the blast including the head of Cyprus' Navy Andreas Ioannides. The commander of the Evangelos Florakis base, Lambros Lambrou, also died. Power was restored to RAF Akrotiri, Episkopi, Dhekelia and Ayios Nikolaos overnight and things are currently running as normal. The Cyprus Electric Authority have said they are trying to keep the impact on vital sectors to a minimum but the Sovereign base areas have been warned that they may experience power interruptions over the next 24 hours The majority of shops and cafes are open for business but due to the power uncertainty Service Children's Education took the decision to close the schools for another day. They will assess the situation and decide later on whether or not they open for the rest of the week. The Vassilikou power station went offline when containers of Iranian arms seized from a vessel in 2009 exploded at a Cypriot naval base yesterday morning. The Defence Minister and Military Chief have resigned over the incident.

Death toll rises to 15 in Cyprus naval base explosion 11.07.11
Cyprus's defence minister and army chief have resigned after a massive explosion at a munitions dump killed at least 15 people. The blast happened at a military base where confiscated Iranian munitions were being held. It shut down the island's largest power station, causing widespread power cuts, including to the four British military bases on the island. The Ministry of Defence says no British personnel were injured. It's believed the explosion at the Evangelos Florakis naval base near Zygi between Limassol and Larnaca may have been caused by a brush fire. The British military bases of RAF Akrotiri, Episkopi, Dhekelia and Ayios Nikolaus have all been hit by power shortages. With criticism mounting over how the material that exploded had been handled and stored, Defence Minister Costas Papacostas and the country's top military official, National Guard Chief General Petros Tsalikides, resigned. A government spokesman said investigators had ruled out sabotage as a cause for the blast. He said experts will be called from abroad to help determine the exact cause of the explosion. President Dimitris Christofias had asked Tsalikides and Papacostas to remain in their posts until replacements were found. The government has declared a three-day mourning period with all flags at public buildings flying at half staff. State funerals will be held for those killed. The concussion wave from the blast damaged houses in nearby villages, and knocked out the island's main power station, leading to power cuts in several areas. Authorities appealed to the public to limit their electricity consumption, which has spiked amid a three-day heatwave that has led to temperatures of about 40C. Airport authorities said both Paphos and Larnaca airports were reducing power consumption to the minimum possible and had turned on their generators. The Agriculture Ministry also urged the public to reduce water consumption as much as possible because desalination plants had been taken offline due to power problems. The blast occurred just one day shy of the ninth anniversary of a fatal national guard helicopter crash that killed then National Guard commander Evangelos Florakis - for which the naval base is named - and four other officers.

Forces help preserve Cyprus wildlife 12.08.11
The Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus are not only home to British Forces based on the Island, but also provide a haven for wildlife. The environment surrounding Akrotiri, Episkopi and Dhekelia is largely unspoilt - and thanks to the work of volunteers and British Forces Personnel - endangered species are being given a helping hand.

Cipro
( source Wikipedia )

Republic of Cyprus
Cyprus i/ˈsaɪprəs/ (Greek: Κύπρος, Kýpros, IPA: [ˈcipɾos]; Turkish: Kıbrıs, IPA: [ˈkɯbɾɯs]), officially the Republic of Cyprus (Greek: Κυπριακή Δημοκρατία, Kypriakī́ Dīmokratía, IPA: [cipɾiaˈci ðimokɾaˈtia]; Turkish: Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti, IPA: [ˈkɯbɾɯs dʒumhuɾijeˈti]), is an island country in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea,[5][6], east of Greece, south of Turkey, west of Syria, Lebanon, northwest of Israel and north of Egypt. Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, a member state of the European Union.
The earliest known human activity on the island dates to around the 10th millennium BC. Archaeological remains from this period include the well-preserved Neolithic village of Khirokitia, which has been declared a World Heritage Site with an "enhanced protection" status in the event of armed conflict[7] by UNESCO, along with the archaeological sites of Paphos and the Painted Churches of the Troodos Region. Cyprus is home to some of the oldest water wells in the world.[8]
Cyprus was settled by Mycenean Greeks in two waves in the 2nd millennium BC. As a strategic location in the Middle East,[9][10][11][12] it was subsequently occupied by several major powers, including the empires of the Assyrians, Egyptians, and Persians, from whom the island was seized in 333 BC by Alexander the Great. Subsequent rule by Ptolemaic Egypt, the Roman Empire, the Byzantines, Arab caliphates for a short period, the French Lusignan dynasty, and the Venetians, was followed by the Ottoman conquest in 1571. It remained under Ottoman control for over three centuries. Cyprus was placed under British administration in 1878 until it was granted independence in 1960,[13] becoming a member of the Commonwealth the following year.
In 1974, seven years after the intercommunal violence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots,[14] an attempted coup d'état by Greek Cypriot nationalists[15][16] and elements of the Greek military junta[17] with the aim of achieving enosis (union of the island with Greece) took place.[17] Turkey used this as a pretext to invade the northern portion of the island. Turkish forces remained after a cease-fire, resulting in the partition of the island; an objective of Turkey since 1955.[17] The intercommunal violence and subsequent Turkish invasion led to the displacement of over 150,000 Greek Cypriots[18][19] and 50,000 Turkish Cypriots,[20] and the establishment of a separate Turkish Cypriots political entity in the north. These events and the resulting political situation are matters of ongoing dispute.
The Republic of Cyprus has de jure[21] sovereignty over the island of Cyprus and its surrounding waters, except for the British Overseas Territory of Akrotiri and Dhekelia, administered as Sovereign Base Areas. However, the Republic of Cyprus is de facto partitioned into two main parts; the area under the effective control of the Republic, comprising about 59% of the island's area, and the Turkish-controlled area in the north,[22] calling itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and recognised only by Turkey, covering about 36% of the island's area. The international community considers the North as occupied territory of the Republic of Cyprus.
Cyprus is the third most populous island in the Mediterranean Sea and one of its most popular tourist destinations.[23] An advanced,[24] high-income economy with a very high Human Development Index,[25][26] the Republic of Cyprus was a founding member of the Non-Aligned Movement until it joined the European Union on 1 May 2004.[27][28] On 1 January 2008, the Republic of Cyprus joined the Eurozone.
