Short visit of Dali (Yunnan - China)
(EN) Dali City is a county-level city in and the seat of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, northwestern Yunnan province of Southwest China. Dali is the ancient capital of both the Bai kingdom Nanzhao, which flourished in the area during the 8th and 9th centuries, and the Kingdom of Dali, which reigned from 937-1253. Situated in a once significantly Muslim part of South China, Dali was also the center of the Panthay Rebellion against the reigning imperial Qing Dynasty from 1856-1863. Dali is also famous for the many types of marble it produces, which are used primarily in construction and for decorative objects. In fact, Dali is so famous for the stone that the name of marble in Chinese is literally "Dali Stone" Dali is now a major tourist destination, along with Lijiang, for both domestic and international tourists. Dali and Yunnan's capital Kunming are only a 40-minute flight apart. Dali's newly finished administrative district that houses the newly opened Dali International Convention Center is in Longshan District. The Dali government's urban planning keeps its old and new districts separate, so those coming here for the first time often feel they have entered a time tunnel. The "new city" is known as Xiaguan and is south of the old city. The old city was built during Ming Dynasty emperor Hongwu's reign (1368--1398). Owing to the distance between them, the old city is still peaceful and quiet. (wikipedia) VALPARD valpardfilms.awardspace.com Map for Yunnan trip : maps ...

The Three Pagodas (Dali - Yunnan - China)
(EN) The Three Pagodas are an ensemble of three independent pagodas arranged on the corners of a equilateral triangle, near the town of Dali, Yunnan province, China, dating from the time of the Nanzhao kingdom and Kingdom of Dali. The Three Pagodas are located about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) north of scenic Dali, Yunnan province. They are at the east foot of the tenth peak of the massive Cangshan Mountains and face the west shore of the Erhai Lake of the ancient Dali town. The Three Pagodas are made of brick and covered with white mud. As its name implies, the Three Pagodas comprise three independent pagodas forming a symmetric triangle. The elegant, balanced and stately style is unique in China's ancient Buddhist architectures, which makes it a must-see in the tour of Dali. The Three Pagodas, visible from miles away, has been a landmark of Dali City and selected as a national treasure meriting preservation in China. The main pagoda, known as Qianxun Pagoda (pinyin Qian Xun Ta), reportedly built during 823-840 AD by king Quan Fengyou (劝丰佑) of the Nanzhao state, is 69.6 meters (227 feet) high and is one of the tallest pagodas in China's history. The central pagoda is square shaped and composed of sixteen stories; each story has multiple tiers of upturned eaves. There is a carved shrine containing a white marble sitting Buddha statue at the center of each façade of every story. The body of the pagoda is hollow from the first to the eighth story, surrounded with 3.3 meters (10 ...

CIA Archives: Buddhism in Burma - History, Politics and Culture
Buddhism in Burma (also known as Myanmar) is predominantly of the Theravada tradition, practised by 89% of the country's population. It is the most religious Buddhist country in terms of the proportion of monks in the population and proportion of income spent on religion. Adherents are most likely found among the dominant ethnic Bamar (or Burmans), Shan, Rakhine (Arakanese), Mon, Karen, and Chinese who are well integrated into Burmese society. Monks, collectively known as the Sangha, are venerated members of Burmese society. Among many ethnic groups in Myanmar, including the Bamar and Shan, Theravada Buddhism is practiced in conjunction with nat worship, which involves the placation of spirits who can intercede in worldly affairs. With regard to the Daily Routines as Buddhists in Myanmar, there are two most popular practices: merit-making and vipassana (Insight Meditation). The weizza path is the least popular (an esoteric form somewhat linked to Buddhist aspiration that involves the occult).[4] Merit-making is the most common path undertaken by Burmese Buddhists. This path involves the observance of the Five Precepts and accumulation of good merit through charity and good deeds (dana) in order to obtain a favorable rebirth. The vipassana path, which has gained ground since the early 1900s, is a form of insight meditation believed to lead to enlightenment. The weizza path, is an esoteric system of occult practices (such as recitation of spells, samatha meditation, and ...

Yunnan Shangri-La
Yunnan is situated in a mountainous area, with high elevations in the northwest and low elevations in the southeast. Most of the population lives in the eastern part of the province. In the west, the relative height from mountain peaks to river valleys can be as much as 3000 meters. Yunnan is rich in natural resources and has the largest diversity of plant life in China. Of the approximately 30000 species of higher plants in China, Yunnan has perhaps 17000 or more. Yunnan became part of the Han Dynasty (206 BC-220 AD) during 2nd century BC. It became the seat of a Tibeto-Burman speaking kingdom known as the Kingdom of Nanzhao in the 8th century AD. Nanzhao was multi-ethnic, but the elite most likely spoke a northern dialect of Yi, which became established as the prestige dialect. The Mongols conquered the region in the 13th century, with local control exercised by warlords until the 1930s. As with other parts of China's southwest, Japanese occupation in the north during World War II forced a migration of majority Han people into the region. Ethnic minorities in Yunnan account for about 34 percent of its total population. Major ethnic groups include Yi, Bai, Hani, Zhuang, Dai and Miao.

Dali the Ancient Capital City in Yunnan, China
Terry Hodgkinson aka "wandering ninja" wanders through Dali the first of Yunnan's northwestern unique village cities. "What a beautiful village/city. Just loved the old pagodas and temples even out on Lake Dali." - Terry Bacground Info: Dali is situated near the foothills of the Himalayas, on the southern end of the legendary Silk Road, in Yunnan province, south of Tibet. The Erhai Lake (Dali - Yunnan - China)
(EN) Er Lake, Chinese Erhai (ěrhǎi, 洱海), is an alpine fault lake in Yunnan province, China. Its name means "Ear-shaped Sea", due to its shape as seen by locals and travellers. Er Lake was also known as Yeyuze or Kunming Lake in ancient times. A commonly-seen mistranslation is Erhai Lake. Erhai is situated at 1972 metres (6470 ft) above sea level. In size, the North-South length of the lake is 40 kilometres (25 mi) and the East-West width is roughly 7--8 kilometres (4.3--5.0 mi). Its area is 250 square kilometres (97 sq mi), making it the second largest highland lake of China, after Dianchi Lake. Its circumference reaches 116 kilometres (72 mi), its average depth is of 11 metres (36 ft) and the total storage capacity of 2.5 billion cubic metres (2000000 acre·ft). The lake is sandwiched between the Cangshan Mountains to the West and Dali City. It starts at Dengchuan at its northern extremity and finishes at Xiaguan city in the South, receiving water from the Miju and Mici Rivers (in the North), the Bolou River (in the East) and smallers streams from the Cangshan Mountains. Yangbi River is the lake's outlet in the South and eventually flows into the Lancang River (Mekong River). The lakeshore can be explored by hiking. Highlights include Erhai Lake Park and the Butterfly Springs on the Western bank. Islands on the lake -- including Guanyin Ge, Jinsuo Island ("Golden Shuttle Island"), Nanzhao Fengqing Island and Xiaoputuo Island -- are also available for visits. The lake is ...

Lands of Thailand
PLEASE READ BEFORE YOU WATCH THE VDO. The Facts of Thailand history as follows: - The earliest mention of the Thai, as a nation in south China call NAN-JOA (Nanzhao or Nanman), comes from Chinese records dating back to the sixth century BCE. These early Thai emanated out of the Yunnan region and dispersed into the general area of what is today Thailand. - The known early history of Thailand begins with the earliest major archaeological site at Ban Chiang that at least by 3600 BC. Meanwhile, Malay, Mon, and Khmer civilizations flourished in the region prior to the domination of the Thais, most notably the kingdom of Srivijaya in the south, the Dvaravati kingdom in central Thailand and the Khmer empire based at Angkor. Sukhothai Kingdom (1238-1448): - Chiang Saen was established in the early 700s and Mueang Sua (Luang Prabang) around AD 728 making them the first kingdoms established by the Tai-speaking people in southeast Asia, prior to the migration and expansion of the Tai-speaking people into northern Thailand, Laos, and eventually into central Thailand and central Laos. - The city of Sukhotai was part of the Khmer empire until 1238, when two Tai chieftains, Pho Khun Pha Muang and Pho Khun Bang Klang Hao, declared their independence and established Sukhotai Kingdom (1238-1448) as known the Thai-ruled kingdom. To form the Thai Kingdom, Thai annexed some parts of prior regions until Rattanakosin Kingdom (1782), which shown by Franco-Siamese records and others. - Most of ...

The Guanyin Tang temple (Dali - Yunnan - China)
(EN) Guanyin Temple (Guanyintang in Chinese) is located in the south of Old Town of Dali, about 10 minutes' drive. Popularly enshrined and worshipped in Dali area, Guanyin has been regarded as a Patron God or Goddess of Bai minority. Buddhism in Dali could be taken as Yunnan Esoteric or Dian Mi, in which Guanyin is much more important than Buddha; experts referred to the Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) there as Arcarya Guanyin (A Cuo Ye in Chinese) who is much slimmer than those elsewhere. It's even said that Pi Luoge, the founder of the Nanzhao Kingdom, had been nominated by Guanyin as the governor of the Six Tribes at that time. Among Buddhist temples in Dali, Guanyin temples or shrines are the majority, and Guanyin Tang or Guanyin Temple is the most famous one. Chinese Civilization 2010-02-09 Classic and Immortal: Sanxingdui Culture and Yi Culture
In the songs of the Hmong people, the Yi were known as southern Man people. To this day, the Yi are still called Man by the Hmong. The Yi people are also the largest Tibeto-Burmese group in China with a history of 5000 yrs old. Once lived along the Weihe River under Yandi. The Yi people established the Nanzhao Kingdom as well as the ancient culture of southwest China, known as Sanxingdui. There were many unforgetable paintings about Yi Ethnic Minority culture in Pang Maokun 's works. In recent years, Pang Maokun has drawed many paintings to introduce Yi Ethnic Minority culture.
