The Ethical movement, also referred to as the Ethical Culture movement or simply Ethical Culture, is an ethical, educational, and religious movement that is usually traced back to Felix Adler (1851–1933). Individual chapter organizations are generically referred to as "Ethical Societies", though their names may include "Ethical Society," "Ethical Culture Society," "Society for Ethical Culture," "Ethical Humanist Society," or other variations on the theme of "Ethical."
Ethical Culture is premised on the idea that honoring and living in accordance with ethical principles is central to what it takes to live meaningful and fulfilling lives, and to creating a world that is good for all. Practitioners of Ethical Culture focus on supporting one another in becoming better people, and on doing good in the world.
The American Ethical Union is a federation of about 25 Ethical Societies in the United States, representing the Ethical Culture movement. It is one of the founding member organizations of the International Humanist and Ethical Union.
Ethical Culture Fieldston School (ECFS), known as Fieldston, is a private independent school in New York City. The school is a member of the Ivy Preparatory School League. The two lower schools feed into Fieldston Middle (grades 6-8) and Fieldston Upper (grades 9-12)—also located on the Fieldston campus in Riverdale. Ethical Culture is headed by Rob Cousins, Fieldston Lower is headed by George Burns, Fieldston Middle is headed by Kevin Jacobson, and Fieldston Upper is headed by Robert J. Cairo (Interim Principal). Tuition and fees for ECF were $43,265 for the 2014-15 school year.
Reuben Garrett Lucius "Rube" Goldberg (July 4, 1883 – December 7, 1970) was an American cartoonist, sculptor, author, engineer, and inventor.
He is best known for a series of popular cartoons depicting complicated gadgets that perform simple tasks in indirect, convoluted ways, similar to Heath Robinson devices in the UK, as well as the Storm P devices in Denmark. Goldberg received many honors in his lifetime, including a Pulitzer Prize for his political cartooning in 1948 and the Banshees' Silver Lady Award in 1959.
Goldberg was a founding member and the first president of the National Cartoonists Society, and he is the namesake of the Reuben Award, which the organization awards to the Cartoonist of the Year. He is the inspiration for various international competitions, known as Rube Goldberg Machine Contests, which challenge participants to make a complicated machine to perform a simple task.
Reuben Lucius Goldberg was born July 4, 1883, in San Francisco, California, to Jewish parents Max and Hannah (Cohen) Goldberg. He was the third of seven children, three of whom died as children (older brother Garrett, younger brother Walter, and younger sister Lillian also survived).

Please join Peter Watts for a gallery lecture in conjunction with his exhibition at PAAM, on view September 24-November 14, 2010. The paintings of Peter Watts, in the words of the artist, “condense the richness of the landscape of Wellfleet,” where he has lived for over forty years. “I have absorbed this landscape and considered its every nuance of light, and change of topogra- phy and weather.” As art critic Margaret Sheffield noted, Watts “expresses thought, emotion, and mood through color,” working with high contrast and simplified form. Peter Watts first came to Cape Cod as a child and returned in 1954 with the artist teacher La Force Bailey. He has taught at the Ethical Culture Fieldston School, C.W. Post College, and Trinity School among others, and he is represented by the Berta Wa...
Iowa Summer Writing Festival Instructors Melanie Braverman and Michael Morse will read from their poetry. Melanie Braverman will read from Red, winner of the Perugia Press Prize, the Publishing Triangle Audre Lorde Poetry Prize, and a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award. This peninsular shoreline setting informs her poetry, poetry that is unselfconsciously about the search for love and security in the face of grief and within a community. Her work has appeared in Poetry, The American Poetry Review, and The New York Times Sunday Magazine, and she was a 2014 Pushcart nominee. Former Writer in Residence at Brandeis University, she currently serves as Cultural Director for the Alzheimer’s Family Suppo...
