First edition in Latin. Ptolemy's treatise on astrology, the Tetrabiblos, was the most popular astrological work of antiquity and also enjoyed great influence in the Islamic world and the medieval Latin West. The translation was made from Arabic to Latin in 1138 by Plato of Tivoli, the 12th-century Italian mathematician, astronomer and translator who lived in Barcelona from 1116 to 1138. It has a commentary by Ali ibn Ridwan ibn Ali ibn Ja'far al-Misri (c.988c.1061; known in the west as Haly, or Haly Abenrudian). The work is divided into four books: the first is a defence of astrology and technical concepts, the second deals with the influences on earth (including astrological geography and weather prediction), and the third and fourth discuss the influences on individuals. The present copy confirms to the second copy mentioned in BMC, with the impression of two headings from a law book printed in red on the lower half on verso of the last page.

In this episode we speak with Brazilian researchers Cristina de Amorim Machado and Marcus Reis Pinheiro about their academic work on astrology from the perspective of the history of and philosophy of science. Cristina has researched the translation of the Tetrabiblos in her PhD and Marcus specialises in Ancient philosophy, cosmology and ethics. They have recently translated the first three chapters of Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos from Greek into Portuguese as a part of their ongoing research. They are also part of an academic research group on astrology - Academia Celeste (Celestial Academy) - that gathers researchers of various fields and academic institutions from all over Brazil.

Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss the ancient Greek astronomer and mathematician Ptolemy, and consider how and why his geocentric theory of the universe held sway for so many centuries. In his seminal astronomical work, the Almagest, written in the 2nd century AD, Ptolemy proposed that the Earth was at the centre of the universe and explained all the observed motions of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars with a system of uniform circular motions which he referred to as 'epicycles'. But Ptolemy was a polymath and did not confine his study of the stars to mathematical equations. He was also interested in astrology and his book on this topic, the Tetrabiblos, tackled the spiritual aspects of the cosmos and its influence on individual lives and personalities.Ptolemy's model of the universe remained the dominant one for over a thousand years. It was not until 1543, and Copernicus's heliocentric theory of the world, that the Ptolemaic model was finally challenged, and not until 1609 that Johannes Kepler's New Astronomy put an end to his ideas for good. But how and why did Ptolemy's system survive for so long?

Astrologia Suomessa aloitetaan käsittelemään astrologia tutkielmaa jonka on kirjoittanut Claudius Ptolemy 150-200 AD luvulla. Tämä kirja on ollut erittäin pitkään astrologien arvostama "astrologian Raamattu" ja se on toiminut myös Islamistisen keskiaikaisen astrologian tukipilarina.
Koitan tiivistää tärkeitä ajatuksia kirjasta ja suomentaa jokseenkin vaikea lukuista tekstiä niin hyvin kuin pystyn. Kirjassa Claudius Ptolemy tutkii ja käsittelee auringon, kuun ja tähtien kiertokulkua ja toistensa välisiä suhteita. On mielenkiintoista tutkia kuinka siihen aikaan alettiin tulkita planeettojen vaikutusta maahan ja meihin ihmisiin.

Tetrabiblos
Tetrabiblos (Τετράβιβλος) 'four books', also known in Greek as Apotelesmatiká (Ἀποτελεσματικά) "Effects", and in Latin as Quadripartitum "Four Parts", is a text on the philosophy and practice of astrology, written in the 2nd century AD by the Alexandrian scholar Claudius Ptolemy (c. AD 90–c. AD 168).
Ptolemy's Almagest was an authoritative text on astronomy for more than a thousand years, and the Tetrabiblos, its companion volume, was equally influential in astrology, the study of the effects of astronomical cycles on earthly matters. But whilst the Almagest as an astronomical authority was superseded by acceptance of the heliocentric model of the solar system, the Tetrabiblos remains an important theoretical work for astrology.
Besides outlining the techniques of astrological practice, Ptolemy's philosophical defense of the subject as a natural, beneficial study helped secure theological tolerance towards astrology in Western Europe during the Medieval era. This allowed Ptolemaic teachings on astrology to be included in universities during the Renaissance, which brought an associated impact upon medical studies and literary works. The book's intellectual standing had collapsed by the end of the 17th century, when Ptolemy's work and the principles it presented faced criticisms of being outmoded and based on superstition.

Melvyn Bragg and his guests discuss the ancient Greek astronomer and mathematician Ptolemy, and consider how and why his geocentric theory of the universe held sway for so many centuries. In his seminal astronomical work, the Almagest, written in the 2nd century AD, Ptolemy proposed that the Earth was at the centre of the universe and explained all the observed motions of the Sun, Moon, planets and stars with a system of uniform circular motions which he referred to as 'epicycles'. But Ptolemy was a polymath and did not confine his study of the stars to mathematical equations. He was also interested in astrology and his book on this topic, the Tetrabiblos, tackled the spiritual aspects of the cosmos and its influence on individual lives and personalities.Ptolemy's model of the universe remained the dominant one for over a thousand years. It was not until 1543, and Copernicus's heliocentric theory of the world, that the Ptolemaic model was finally challenged, and not until 1609 that Johannes Kepler's New Astronomy put an end to his ideas for good. But how and why did Ptolemy's system survive for so long?

Astrologia Suomessa aloitetaan käsittelemään astrologia tutkielmaa jonka on kirjoittanut Claudius Ptolemy 150-200 AD luvulla. Tämä kirja on ollut erittäin pitkään astrologien arvostama "astrologian Raamattu" ja se on toiminut myös Islamistisen keskiaikaisen astrologian tukipilarina.
Koitan tiivistää tärkeitä ajatuksia kirjasta ja suomentaa jokseenkin vaikea lukuista tekstiä niin hyvin kuin pystyn. Kirjassa Claudius Ptolemy tutkii ja käsittelee auringon, kuun ja tähtien kiertokulkua ja toistensa välisiä suhteita. On mielenkiintoista tutkia kuinka siihen aikaan alettiin tulkita planeettojen vaikutusta maahan ja meihin ihmisiin.
Ensi kerralla käyn läpi Ptolemyn kirjoittamia alkusanoja Tetrabiblos kirjassa.

If you can't finish the test in time, you will lose the chance to become a qualified astrologer and be lost in the forest of the zodiac forever...

First edition in Latin. Ptolemy's treatise on astrology, the Tetrabiblos, was the most popular astrological work of antiquity and also enjoyed great influence in the Islamic world and the medieval Latin West. The translation was made from Arabic to Latin in 1138 by Plato of Tivoli, the 12th-century Italian mathematician, astronomer and translator who lived in Barcelona from 1116 to 1138. It has a commentary by Ali ibn Ridwan ibn Ali ibn Ja'far al-Misri (c.988c.1061; known in the west as Haly, or Haly Abenrudian). The work is divided into four books: the first is a defence of astrology and technical concepts, the second deals with the influences on earth (including astrological geography and weather prediction), and the third and fourth discuss the influences on individuals. The present copy confirms to the second copy mentioned in BMC, with the impression of two headings from a law book printed in red on the lower half on verso of the last page.

In this episode we speak with Brazilian researchers Cristina de Amorim Machado and Marcus Reis Pinheiro about their academic work on astrology from the perspective of the history of and philosophy of science. Cristina has researched the translation of the Tetrabiblos in her PhD and Marcus specialises in Ancient philosophy, cosmology and ethics. They have recently translated the first three chapters of Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos from Greek into Portuguese as a part of their ongoing research. They are also part of an academic research group on astrology - Academia Celeste (Celestial Academy) - that gathers researchers of various fields and academic institutions from all over Brazil.

Tetrabiblos
Tetrabiblos (Τετράβιβλος) 'four books', also known in Greek as Apotelesmatiká (Ἀποτελεσματικά) "Effects", and in Latin as Quadripartitum "Four Parts", is a text on the philosophy and practice of astrology, written in the 2nd century AD by the Alexandrian scholar Claudius Ptolemy (c. AD 90–c. AD 168).
Ptolemy's Almagest was an authoritative text on astronomy for more than a thousand years, and the Tetrabiblos, its companion volume, was equally influential in astrology, the study of the effects of astronomical cycles on earthly matters. But whilst the Almagest as an astronomical authority was superseded by acceptance of the heliocentric model of the solar system, the Tetrabiblos remains an important theoretical work for astrology.
Besides outlining the techniques of astrological practice, Ptolemy's philosophical defense of the subject as a natural, beneficial study helped secure theological tolerance towards astrology in Western Europe during the Medieval era. This allowed Ptolemaic teachings on astrology to be included in universities during the Renaissance, which brought an associated impact upon medical studies and literary works. The book's intellectual standing had collapsed by the end of the 17th century, when Ptolemy's work and the principles it presented faced criticisms of being outmoded and based on superstition.
