In Search of Wabi Sabi (Part 1 of 7)
British novelist Marcel Theroux is fascinated by Wabi Sabi, a theory of Japanese aesthetics in which imperfection and transience are the touchstone of beauty. The Japanese say that if you can understand Wabi Sabi, you will understand Japan and the Japanese. Yet at the same time they have immense difficulty in explaining the concept themselves, so Marcel travels across Japan, from Tokyo to Kyoto and then on to the mountains of Fukui, trying to unravel the meaning of this baffling concept that is at the heart of what makes the Japanese tick. It is a challenging, funny and ultimately moving journey that starts under the bright neon lights and craziness of Tokyo and ends in an austere Zen Temple in the snowy foothills of Japan's eastern mountains.

The Japanese Sword and the Japanese Aesthetic
Learn more about the exhibition Art of the Samurai: Japanese Arms and Armor, 1156—1868, on view at the Met October 21, 2009 — January 10, 2010: tinyurl.com Victor Harris, Keeper Emeritus of Japanese Antiquities, British Museum; honorary librarian, The Japan Society; and author and art consultant This is the first comprehensive exhibition devoted to the arts of the samurai. Arms and armor is the principal focus, bringing together the finest examples of armor, swords and sword mountings, archery equipment and firearms, equestrian equipment, banners, surcoats, and related accessories of rank such as fans and batons. Drawn entirely from public and private collections in Japan, the majority of objects date from the rise of the samurai in the late Heian period, ca. 1156, through the early modern Edo period, ending in 1868, when samurai culture was abolished. The martial skills and daily life of the samurai, their governing lords, the daimyo, and the ruling shoguns will also be evoked through the presence of painted scrolls and screens depicting battles and martial sports, castles, and portraits of individual warriors. The exhibition concludes with a related exhibition documenting the recent restoration in Japan of a selection of arms and armor from the Metropolitan Museums permanent collection. This is the first exhibition ever devoted to the subject of Japanese arms and armor conservation. This Sunday at the Met is supported by the Japan Foundation.

Unusual Designs And Japanese Aesthetics: Teuffel Guitars
Teuffel guitars have some of the most unusual designs of any six-stringed instrument on display at Winter NAMM 2007. Can you get your head around a guitar with three moveable (and removable) pickups? What about an axe with buttons you can push to simulate a guitar cable with a short in it? Or A 60-cycle hum? Mic feedback? Those features are included with the Teuffel Tesla model. Check out the Gearwire interview video with Ulrich Teuffel about his latest guitar creations, including the Birdfish, the Tesla, and the newest model called the Ni-Wa.

Japanese Majora's Mask v1.1: Aesthetic Differences
--READ COMPLETELY BEFORE WATCHING-- After a few weeks of playing through the Japanese version extensively, and after a few days of capturing and editing footage, I have finally created an exhaustive video detailing the differences between Japanese MM v1.1 and US MM. Due to the sheer number of differences, I decided to split the videos into thematic parts. This part details the changes to the aesthetics of MM, the changes that alter the sounds and sights of the game. Though some differences are difficult to notice, most can be easily picked out with an observant eye. If you would like to see the other part, which deals with changes to alter the way you play the game, please see: www.youtube.com I would HIGHLY recommend turning on both Annotations and the Interactive Transcript. The Interactive Transcript, in particular, is invaluable tool, as it lists every version difference in text and highlights the difference that you are currently watching. Annotations are used to explain some things visually and also are used to give credit to the people of ZSR who have discovered other differences; this video would not be as complete without their commendable effort. There are a few things that I did not include in this video, mostly because they already exist in some shape or form on my Youtube account. See: Bizarre Fiery Death: www.youtube.com Mailbox Sound Differences: www.youtube.com Miscellaneous Differences: www.youtube.com Edit: I actually discovered another version ...

YOHJI YAMAMOTO: THIS IS MY DREAM
Notoriously private Japanese fashion design icon Yohji Yamamoto lets his guard down in an exclusive, intimate short documentary film about life and the creative process, from Tokyo to New York.
Opening up about his artistic motivations, his love of music, and his aesthetic vision, the documentary follows Yamamoto through the entire creative cycle of a collection for his revolutionary line in collaboration with adidas, Y-3.
Beginning with the finalization of the collection and styling for the show in Tokyo, followed by his arrival in New York City to oversee the final touches for the presentation of Y-3’s Spring/Summer 2010 collection, the documentary turns an intimate eye on Yamamoto during fittings, model castings, guitar-playing, philosophical musings, and interactions with his staff and the global team bringing his ideas to life.
This is the official trailer for the documentary.

USUGROW
With mind bending meticulous detail, Usugrow’s work crosses the line between bad ass and refined elegance.
While developing his vision and technique, Usugrow worked designing promotional graphics for Japan's punk and metal scenes, Usugrows unique, stylized combination of traditional Japanese artwork and punk iconography soon made him the visual identity of Tokyo’s underground,
But Usugrows’ global notoriety begun when overseas brands saw the potential for collaborative projects, resulting in a series of collectable products and feature articles in leading counterculture and art publications. A global cult following quickly resulted.
As a conscious leader of his community, Usugrow has been using his fame to organize and promote a new Japanese art movement consisting of a tribe of highly talented artists with roots in the metal, punk, hip hop and tattoos, all of whom share his elegant aesthetics.
This group, known as The Shinganists (The Outsiders) consists of Usugrow, Mozyskey, Toshikazu Nozaka, Bene & Jun Kaneko and have exhibited collectively and individually across the globe, representing a true and revolutionary art movement.
Motifs of skulls and death are commonly depicted Usugrows black and white artwork, however instead acting as reminders our own mortality, Usugrow endeavors to represent them as symbols of rebirth and beauty.
Toshikazu exhibited along side fellow Shinganist artist Usugrow at Backwoods Gallery in July 2011

Amsterdams Blauw Denim Spring/Summer 2011
Amsterdams Blauw® is the colour of paint that was used in the golden century between 1500-1750 to paint dutch porcelain. The striking blue colour was obtained by mixing indigo from china and japan with an oil based paint. Nowadays you will still see the colour present on Amsterdam street signs and
house number plates. We use the name Amsterdams Blauw® for the denim collection of Scotch & Soda.
A Dutch based brand from the denim capital of the world Amsterdam.
Scotch & Soda Amsterdams Blauw® is an ambitious young denim project that draws inspiration from American and Japanese denim aesthetics. We're constantly inspired by our great city, Amsterdam which allows us to be free in our approach to things. We want to play the maverick card and be the new and
fresh alternative for the denim establishment. We are going to portray the Scotch & Soda Amsterdams Blauw® collection as the challenger brand.
