N/um Tchai: Ceremonial Dance of the Bushmen - PREVIEW
Purchase: www.der.org Tchai is the word used by Ju/'hoansi to describe getting together to dance and sing; n/um can be translated as medicine, or supernatural potency. In the 1950's, when this film was shot, Ju/'hoansi gathered for "medicine dances" often, usually at night, and sometimes such dances lasted until dawn. In this film, women sit on the ground, clapping and singing and occasionally dancing a round or two, while men circle around them, singing and stamping rhythms with their feet. The strength of the songs is their n/um, or medicine, thought to be a gift from the great god. N/um is also in the fire, and even more so in the "owners of medicine," or healers. a film by John Marshall from the !Kung series distributed by Documentary Educational Resources

Tokelau Ceremonial Dance.mp4
Performed at a wedding on the Gold Coast. The dances are traditional ceremonial pieces stitched together for the wedding. Not is known about Tokelau, in fact going to the wedding was the first time I have ever heard of this Island nation. I have monetized this piece for the sole purpose of raising money to produce a film on the island, so please view this and enjoy it many times. I tried to capture the pieces in one shot so I didn't have to do ant editing. My aim was to keep it in one complete piece in case some one needed it for a study. Shot a canon 7D, using the on board mic for sound. Please send this link to as many people as possible, in think more needs to be known about Tokelau.

Mer Island Ceremonial Dance 1967
Malo Ceremonial Dance is a sacred dance from Mer Island, Torres Strait. In the Torres Strait, Malo ra Gelar or Malo's Law is a "set of religiously sanctioned rules which Meriam people feel bound to observe. Stemming from the myth of the Meriam culture heroes Malo-Bomai (Malo and his maternal uncle, Bomai), a need of land tenure and inheritance, into clan unity and Meriam identity, reciprocity with certain neighbours and with departed ancestors, Malo's Law has the authority and force of a religious commandment" (Sharp 1996: 7). Malo ra Gelar has dispute management and decision-making principles inherent within it, it is the basis of Meriam land tenure in practice, and was cited in the Mabo native title case. The following passages and translations are examples of Malo's Law. "Malo tag mauki mauki Teter mauki mauki. Malo tag aorir aorir, Teter aorir aorir. Malo tag tupamait tupamait, Teter tupamait tupamait". (Malo keeps his hands to himself; he does not touch what is not his. He does not permit his feet to carry him towards another man's property. His hands are not grasping, he holds them back. He does not wander from his path. He works on tiptoe, silent, careful, Leaving no sign to tell that this is the way he took) (Marou cited by Lawrie 1970: 337). "Arokak arokak lug-ise waipedawa. deregkak deregkak lug-ise waipedawa" (You would not pluck fruit which was not fit to be eaten. What does not belong to you is as unattractive as the fruit you would shun) (Marou cited by ...

Alma Ceremonial Dance Oct 2011
Celebrating my dear friend, Alma Locquiao, with a ceremony at Aguirre Springs, NM Oct 6, 2011. Alma and I shared many moments dancing, playing and giggling together. This was my way to connect with her and celebrate her life. She very much enjoyed and held a lot of native american energy and thought this would be a magical way to "send her off" to the heavens. Love you, Alma.
