The History of Friesland / Fryslân / Frisia
The Dutch province of Friesland has a rich history. The history of Friesland goes back to the Frisii who lived during the time of the Romans. The Frisii culture declined to make way for the Frisians. They eventually founded the Kingdom of Frisia (Magna Frisia). From that moment the history of Frisia began. The Frisian Kingdom contained large parts that are today part of the Netherlands. Therefore the history of Friesland is part of the history of the Netherlands. Dutch history has been influenced by the Frisians. Also by the Vikings. The Vikings arrived in the Netherlands when a power vacuum was created because of the crumbling of the Frankish Empire (Francia or the Carolingian Empire). In Frisia Vikings raided and traded. The Viking Rorik of Dorestad settled as well. This made the Vikings...

How Did the Viking Age Start in Frisia? | History of the Netherlands c. 700 - 810 AD
The Vikings are famous for their raids in Britain and Ireland, making places like Lindisfarne and York, Dublin and Wexford famous names for people into shows like Vikings on HBO and The Last Kingdom on the BBC/Netflix. But somewhere that doesn't get a lot of attention in the Viking Age is the Netherlands, known as Frisia during this time, even though they have a fascinating Viking Age History of their own from Holland to Friesland. In this video I'll be looking at how the Viking Age started in Frisia, what the situation was in the Low Countries in the Migration Era and the Frankish Conquest over King Redbad's pagan kingdom and how this spilled over into the Viking Age with Danish King Godfred's first raid on Dorestad in 810.

The History of the Vikings in the Netherlands
Did Dutch Vikings exist? In this video I'm going to focus on the history of the Vikings in the Netherlands. The Netherlands were back then referred to as the Low Countries. The Low Countries were closely located to Scandinavia. The Vikings came from Denmark, Norway and Sweden. How were the Netherlands influenced by the Vikings? There was Rorik of Dorestad who took control over large parts of Frisia (or: Friesland). He was named after the place he conquered: Dorestad. So how did the Vikings influenced these areas? The history of Frisia (Friesland) was heavy influenced by the Vikings. Norsemen culture was definitely present in Friesland. In Friesland Vikings raided and settled.

In 1588 Friesland was one of the founding members of the Dutch Republic. After the Batavian Revolution Friesland would be incorporated into the Batavian Republic; the Kingdom of Holland; the First French Empire and then the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. Friesland is a unique province of the Netherlands with its own flag, culture and Frisian language.

The wars were mainly about control of the Rhine delta. After the death of the Frisian king Redbad, the Franks gained the upper hand. In 734 at the Battle of the Boarn the Frisians were defeated and the Franks annexed the Frisian lands between the Vlie and the Lauwers. Only the Frisians east of the Lauwers remained independent. In 772 they lost their independence as well. The wars ended with the last uprising of the Frisians in 793 and the pacification of the Frisians by Charlemagne.
