Hand built by a small team in Guild's New Hartford, CT shop, the X-500 Stuart is a 17" archtop built to exacting specifications that have been dialed in for decades. The sound is about as "toppy" as it gets, but it's never brittle or thin. It has that characteristic snappy high-end that defines a good acoustic archtop, but there's also a warm mid-range and smooth, rich bass to balance out the sound. It's reminiscent of great swing guitar tone - think Bucky Pizzarelli, Frank Vignola and Howard Alden. Over time, it's going to get warmer and fuller. The neck is extremely comfortable and won't get in your way when you're reaching for complex chords or picking out fast single note lines. It's perfectly suited for small combo or solo jazz playing, but it'll also thrive in a blues context. Amplifying this guitar won't totally change its tone, either - it's the same thing, just louder. Item Details This Guild X-500 Stuart is a 17" archtop that features a laminated spruce top with laminated figured maple back and sides. The ivory white binding with multiple black/white purfling looks great against the blonde finish. The neck is made of five pieces of maple and walnut, and it has a vintage soft "U" shape. Vintage two-tone mother of pearl/abalone block inlays look great on the bound rosewood fretboard. The 10" fretboard radius along with the 24.75" scale length creates an easy, effortless feel. For pickups, the X-500 features two of Guild's "Frequency Tested" Single Coil pickups. Most electric guitars are inseparable from their pickups. These pickups, however, simply amplify the incredible acoustic tone of this guitar. They barely change or color the sound at all. The two-piece compensated rosewood bridge makes for easy action adjustments, and the gold hardware makes this hollowbody quite a looker. Other features include a black pickguard, bone nut, and deluxe enclosed tuners with cream buttons. Guild continues to craft nearly perfect archtops.
