Robert Reich: On the Economy (2009)
chicagohumanities.org - See more Chicago Humanities Festival events. It's rumored the Roman philosopher Seneca once said, Stand back a little further and laugh. This advice might also apply to our present economic situation. In the 2009 Franke Lecture, economist Robert Reich, currently a professor of public policy at the University of California at Berkeley, offers insights as to what levity can be found in tough times. Reich has served in three national administrations, most recently as President Clinton's Secretary of Labor. He is also the author of many books, including The Work of Nations (1991), The Future of Success (2001), Locked in the Cabinet (1997), and Supercapitalism (2008), and his articles have appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Wall Street Journal. Reich is a founding editor of The American Prospect magazine, and his weekly commentaries on public radios Marketplace are heard by nearly five million people. This annual lecture recognizes the significant contributions to the Chicago Humanities Festival made by its founder and chairman emeritus Richard J. Franke.

Bob Moser Evaluates Gov. Rick Perry's Touted Record in Texas. (Democracy Now!) Part 1 of 2
DemocracyNow.org - Since announcing his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination over the weekend, Texas Gov. Rick Perry has already raised eyebrows over a number of heated comments. On Monday Perry accused Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke of treason and suggested he would face physical harm in Texas. His comments were widely criticized from the White House to Republican key strategist Karl Rove. Perry has also drawn criticism for calling Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare "a Ponzi scheme." Perry's record in Texas is also beginning to face increased scrutiny. He claims responsibility for the an "economic miracle" in Texas, but many have questioned the success of his economic policies. Democracy Now! takes a look at Perry's recent comments and his past with Bob Moser, Executive Editor of The American Prospect. Moser is the former editor of The Texas Observer where he spent the last three years in covering Perry. Is Christianity Good for American Politics? - The Debate
Today, many argue that religious liberty is under assault while others believe that faith is meant for the private realm and its public expression stands in the way of a secular political discourse. This issue is certainly apparent in the controversy surrounding the HHS bill. This being the case, a debate over the role of Christianity in American politics could not be more pertinent. Susan Jacoby, program director at The Center for Inquiry and author of New York Times bestseller, The Age of American Unreason (2008)and Alger Hiss and The Battle for History (2009), is an independent scholar whose work focuses on American intellectual history. Jacoby has been a contributor for more than 25 years, on topics including law, religion, medicine, aging, women's rights, political dissent in the Soviet Union, and Russian literature, to a wide range of periodicals and newspapers. Her articles and essays have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Washington Post Book World, Los Angeles Times Book Review, Newsday, Harper's, The Nation, Vogue, The American Prospect, Mother Jones, and the AARP Magazine, among other publications. Dinesh D'souza, recent author of "What's so Great About Christianity?" and president of the King's College, has been called one of the "top young public-policy makers in the country" by Investor's Business Daily. The New York Times Magazine named him one of America's most influential conservative thinkers. D'Souza's articles have appeared in virtually every ...

Sustainability and Resource Depletion: Survival Challenge for the 21st Century
Google Tech Talks October 2, 2008 ABSTRACT Award-winning author Richard Heinberg (The Oil Depletion Protocol; Peak Everything) identifies the essential axioms of sustainability and ties them to current economic trends such as the high and volatile prices of oil and other commodities. Species survival will require more than "Sustainability Lite"a vague commitment to more environmentally benign practices, but instead an all-encompassing effort to live within the ultimate resource limits of the planet. Speaker: Richard Heinberg Richard Heinberg, the author of eight books, is a Senior Fellow of the Post Carbon Institute and is widely regarded as one of the worlds foremost Peak Oil educators. He writes a regular column for The Ecologist magazine and has authored scores of essays and articles that have appeared in such journals as The American Prospect, Public Policy Research, Quarterly Review, The Futurist, and European Business Review; and on web sites such as Alternet.org, EnergyBulletin.net, TheOilDrum.com GlobalPublicMedia.com, and ProjectCensored.com. Opinion Journalism and the Politics of Language
Complete video at: fora.tv Talking Points Memo blogger Josh Marshall discusses the balance an opinion journalist must hold between political advocacy and informative reporting. ----- On the 60th anniversary of Orwell's Politics and the English Language, George Orwell described political speech as consisting "largely of euphemism, question-begging and sheer cloudy vagueness." Some six decades later, many symptoms of manipulation and propaganda diagnosed by Orwell persist on the American political landscape, along with new disinformation techniques enabled by modern technology. Historians, scientists, philosophers, linguists, cognitive experts, journalists, image-makers, and public figures will debate in three separate sessions the current state of political discourse - and journalism's response to it - on the dawn of a bitterly contested presidential campaign - NYPL Josh Marshall is the publisher of Talking Points Memo, TPMmuckraker, TPM Election Central and TPMCafe. He also writes a weekly column for the Capitol Hill newspaper The Hill. His articles on politics and foreign affairs have appeared in numerous magazines and newspapers across the United States as well as abroad, including the American Prospect, the Atlantic Monthly, the Boston Globe, the Financial Times, , the New Republic, the New Yorker, the New York Post, the New York Times, Salon, and Slate. White House 2.0: Social Media and Government Transparency
Complete video at: fora.tv Ellen Miller, Executive Director of the Sunlight Foundation, says it is the responsibility of government to embrace technology and provide political transparency." Government should be born open, not born secret," she says. ----- Technology evangelists believe that Barack Obama has the potential to fundamentally alter communication between the presidency and the people. Wikis in the White House? Online public comments on legislation? A real-time two-way conversation between citizens and their elected officials? For better or worse, however, nothing is as easy as it might seem. Federal regulations, First Amendment issues, and just plain common sense are going to slow -- and potentially stagnate -- technological innovation in Washington. Panelists discussed their hopes for a more transparent Obama administration and the challenges to a more open and participatory government - New America Foundation Ellen S. Miller is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Sunlight Foundation, a Washington-based, non-profit catalyst that is using new technology to open up Congress. In just two years, Sunlight has created more than two dozen Web sites, databases, distributed research projects, tools and widgets to make information about Congress' activities more accessible through the Internet. Dr. Robert Spitzer Retracts 'Ex-Gay' Study and Apologizes to the LGBT Community
In 1973, Dr. Robert Spitzer led the charge to successfully have homosexuality removed from the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM), which is its list of mental disorders. This was a major victory and remains one the gay movement's signature achievements. Given his stature and key role in declassifying gay people as sick, it was quite a surprise when Dr. Spitzer published a non-peer reviewed 2001 study in the prestigious Archives of Sexual Behavior that claimed some "highly motivated" gay people could become straight through prayer and therapy. The study said that some gay people could reach their "heterosexual potential." When he announced his work at the 2001 APA meeting in New Orleans, it created a media sensation. An Associated Press story called his findings "explosive." In 2012, Dr. Spitzer recanted in the American Prospect magazine. In a letter obtained by Truth Wins Out and sent to the Archives of Sexual Behavior, Dr. Spitzer asked that his study be retracted. TWO went to Dr. Spitzer's home in Princeton, NJ and interviewed him. He not only repudiated his study, he also apologized to the LGBT community. He told anti-gay organizations -- such as NARTH, Focus on the Family, and the American College of Pediatricians to stop promoting his invalid study. He even told Parents and Friends of 'Ex-Gays' (PFOX) to take a video they have posted of Spitzer off their website. With Dr. Spitzer's renunciation of his study, a crowning ...

GAVIN CECCHINI Under Armour All-America 2011
Gavin Cecchini 2012 SS 6'2 182 Lake Charles, LA Barbe Gavin Cecchini (#2) led off and started the game at shortstop for the American team. His brother Garin, a 4th round pick of the Boston Red Sox in 2010 and current 3B for the Lowell Spinners of the Class A New York Penn League, participated in the 2009 Under Armour All America Game powered by Baseball Factory. While Gavin's physical tools are impressive, his instinctual ability to play the game sets him apart. His hit, field and run tools would be considered plus on the 20-80 scouting scale by most, while power and arm are closer to average at present. He is committed to Ole Miss, along with Southeast Texas Sun Devils teammates Stryker Trahan and Ty Hensley. Gavin earned MVP honors for the American team, and he also took home the Under Armour Silver Spike Award for most outstanding player over the course of the week in Chicago.

Comparing US and Scandinavian Economic Policies
Complete video at: fora.tv Economist, author and commentator Robert Kuttner contrasts US economic policies with those found in most Scandinavian countries. ----- Urban Conversations Conference: Strengthening the Middle Class with opening remarks from Congressman Jerry Nadler and featuring speaker Robert Kuttner. As income disparities between wealthy and working-class families become more pronounced, middle-class neighborhoods are disappearing from many American cities. How are leaders working to make their cities livable for middle-income families and affordable for the millions aspiring to gain a foothold in the middle class? Urban Conversations brings together elected officials and leading thinkers from across the nation to foster fresh perspectives and new insights into the key challenges facing urban America and to discuss strategies for addressing them. - The New School Robert Kuttner is co-founder and co-editor of The American Prospect. Canadiens prospect David Desharnais won't let size get in the way of his dream
At 5-foot-6, David Desharnais is small in stature, but the second-year American Leaguer hasn't let that stop him from dominating at every level he has played. In junior, he improved consistently and in his final season posted an impressive 38 goals and 108 points in 61 games with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the Quebec League. Despite finishing with more than 100 points in each of his last two seasons in the QMJHL, Desharnais went undrafted in 2006 and 2007. His consistent play, however, earned him an invitation to the Montreal Canadiens training camp in 2007. Following camp, he was assigned to the ECHL where he continued to evolve. Desharnais lead the ECHL in scoring and won both the regular season and playoff MVP honors, while guiding the Cincinnati Cyclones to a league championship. His tremendous performance also earned him his first NHL contract when Montreal inked the Quebec City native to a two-year, two-way contract in the summer of 2008. Since then, the 23-year-old center has been plying his craft with the Hamilton Bulldogs of the American League and has continued to show steady improvement. In just 60 games this year, Desharnais had 27 goals and 78 points. Jason Cassidy takes a closer look at one of the Canadiens' hardest-working prospects. REPORTER: Jason Cassidy | PRODUCER: Ted Cooper

BYRON BUXTON Under Armour All-America 2011
Byron Buxton 2012 OF/RHP 6'2 170 Baxley, GA Appling County Bryon Buxton (#11) led off and started in CF for the Home National team. He was originally scheduled to pitch in the 8th inning, but he was scratched in favor of Ryan Kellogg due to worsening weather conditions. Not only did I have Buxton as my top prospect out of this event, I had him with the best OF arm strength (and best overall arm strength) and with the best hitting ability. His right handed stroke was a pleasure to watch, especially when he was somehow able to turn up the bat speed with what seemed like no additional effort during the home run derby - which certainly could have gotten him out of his rhythm. He whistled the bat with ease on an inside 93mph fastball for a rocket line drive to LF - certainly an impressive display for a 17 year old hitter with a wood bat. Buxton is another high school quarterback from this group, and has potential to play both baseball and football in college at the University of Georgia.
