G. E. Moore's, "Proof of an External World"
Dialogue about G. E. Moore's famous proof, using the following passages from his article, "Proof of an External World":
"proof of the existence of things outside of us... I can now give a large number of different proofs [of the existence of things outside of us], each of which is a perfectly rigorous proof... I can prove now, for instance, that two human hands exist. How? By holding up my two hands, and saying, as I make a certain gesture with the right hand, "Here is one hand", and adding, as I make a certain gesture with the left, "and here is another"
"the proof which I gave was a perfectly rigorous one; and... it is perhaps impossible to give a better or more rigorous proof of anything whatever.... (1)... the premiss which I adduced as proof of the conclusion was different from the conclusion I adduced it to prove; (2)... the premiss which I adduced was something which I knew to be the case, and not merely something which I believed but which was by no means certain, or something which, though in fact true, I did not know to be so; and (3)... the conclusion did really follow from the premiss."

Partially Examined Life podcast - GE Moore et al. on ethics
On G.E. Moore's Principia Ethica, ch. 1 (1903); Charles Leslie Stevenson's "The Emotive Meaning of Ethical Terms" (1937), and Alasdair MacIntyre's After Virtue, ch. 1-2.
Is there such a thing as moral intuition? Is "good" a simple property that we all recognize but can't explain like yellow? G.E. Moore thinks that any attempt to define good in terms of properties like "pleasure," "interest," or "happiness" are doomed. Even if all pleasurable things were good, the word "good" still wouldn't mean "pleasant;" you could always sensibly ask, "but are those pleasant things really good?" This is Moore's "open question" argument, which expresses his objection to the "naturalistic fallacy," which states that you can't derive an "ought" from an "is."
You can find the entire unabridged Ethics podcast, along with dozens of others discussing philosophers from Aristotle to Wittgenstein, at the Partially Examined Life website: http://www.partiallyexaminedlife.com
About PEL: The podcasters were all graduate students in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin back in the Clinton years. They all left the program at some point before getting their doctorates and have consequently since had time to get outside that whole weird world of academia and reflect on it and the various philosophical topics with a different, and probably much more lazy, perspective.

Music by Kris McDaniel/Ben Bradley
Lyrics by Kris McDaniel/Carrie Jenkins
Lyrics:
There's something wrong with this argument,
but I don't know what it is.
The denial of the conclusion is more plausible
than the conjunction of the premises.
There must be something here to reject;
somethings gotta give.
I'm gonna do the G.E. Moore shift.
I wanna do the G.E. Moore shift.
Come on the G.E. Moore shift.
I wanna do the G.E. Moore shift.
I can't believe you think that that's true.
How can you accept the consequence of that view?
I can't believe you think that that's true.
How can you accept the consequence of that view?
There's nothing great about validity;
it depends on where you start.
Don't even try to modus ponens me;
I'm gonna tollens you so hard.
It's obvious something here ain't right;
use a little common sense
And do the G.E. Moore shift.
I wanna do the G.E. Moore shift.
Come on the G.E. Moore shift.
I wanna do the G.E. Moore shift.
I can't believe you think that that's true.
How can you accept the consequence of that view?
I cant believe you think that that's true.
How can you accept the consequence of that view?
It's obvious something here ain't right;
somethings gotta go.
We've gotta do the G.E. Moore shift.
I wanna do the G.E. Moore shift.
Come on the G.E. Moore shift.
I wanna do the G.E. Moore shift.

Analytic Epistemology
This clip discusses some of the schools of thought in contemporary analytic epistemology.
First, the clip mentions Bertrand Russells dislike for the standard notion of what constitutes "knowledge" in philosophy, believing it to be to much too vague. Then there is a brief summary of G.E. Moore's "Proof of an External World" and his views on foundationalism.
The clip then mentions Ludwig Wittgenstein's idea that "meaning is use" within social contexts, and that philosophical obstacles are really just miscommunication within "language games." Simply put, Wittgenstein thought that there were no such things as genuine philosophical problems, and that philosophy was merely a byproduct of linguistic misunderstandings.
The clip then discusses the differences between foundationalism and coherentism and W.V.O. Quine's notion of the seamless "web of belief." Quine was a strong proponent of the natural sciences, and thought that findings in the natural sciences could shed significant light onto age-old philosophical questions concerning the nature of the mind and knowledge.
The clip then summarizes "The Gettier Problem" which challenged the Platonic definition of knowledge as "justified true belief," and then ends with definitions of internalism/externalism, and Alvin Goldman's causal theory of knowledge.

I'm responding to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL6RofIcBaw but really this video is just a stand alone explanation of my meta-ethics. I'm going to continue with macroeconomics, including a series on the history of the business cycle, but Vulcanthug just did a video on noncognitivism http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jk1iP0pt4AM so here's my 2cents.
BTW - being a noncognitivist with taste but not morality is arbitrary and inconsistent. The forces that make me like sugar and curry are the same that make me like generosity and kindness.

GE Cooling Solution - TrueSense and GenGard
Effective cooling water treatment must include careful management of the interrelationships between corrosion, deposition, and microbiological activity. GE's TrueSense Online for Cooling platform directly measures the functional chemistries that drive success for all three of these dimensions. GE uses those measures to control the system that enables one or more levers of optimization to drive total cost out of cooling operations with a smaller environmental footprint.
