"Smarter on the Way" means connecting seamlessly, serving customers and encouraging sustainability. In recent years it has become one of the most important transport congresses in the world. Hosting the 2012 Congress, the Vice-President of the European Commission and the Austrian Federal Minister for Transport, Innovation and Technology are planning to organise a Ministerial Round Table at the beginning of the Congress on October 22, 2012 to move ITS up the political agenda and foster a coordinated and rapid deployment of ITS. The side event 'Smarter on the way - A vision of a future integrated and user focused transportation system' at the International Transport Forum's 2012 Summit in Leipzig, Germany aimed to link the two events to further create the political framework which is needed for a sustainable transportation system. The side event was devoted to the presentation of the current status of planning and the political and strategic goals of the ITS World Conference 2012, to be held in Vienna, Austria the 22nd until the 26th of October. The Siemens EMU - Metro Trains Melbourne
This video gives you a tour of the Siemens "Nexas" EMU used on the Melbourne suburban rail system. 216 carriages were built from 2002 to 2005 by Siemens AG, comprising of 72 three car sets. These trains were ordered by former operator M Train to run services on their part of the network and to replace their fleet of Hitachi trains. These trains are some of the newest trains on the network and were ordered at the same time as the X'trapolis EMU, ordered by former operator Connex. The train has been very controversial due to braking issues which occured in 2006 following a number of overshoots which led to large parts of the fleet being withdrawn from serivce causing disruptions for commuters and a range of restrictions to the fleet. As of 2012, many of these issues have been fixed and have now proved to become a reliable train for Metro and a very comfortable train for commuters. They have a number of features that other trains in the fleet don't have, including two doors per side on each carriage, plug type doors, 2+2 seating as standard (although newer X'trapolis' are being delivered with 2+2 seating), no interconnecting carriage doors allowing free movement from carriage to carriage. Das Ergebnis Summe Sektoren kletterte im Vergleich zum Vorjahr um 36 Prozent auf 9,1 Milliarden Euro, der Gewinn aus fortgeführten Aktivitäten um fast zwei Drittel auf sieben Milliarden Euro. Auch Umsatz und Auftragseingang legten zu. Während die Umsätze im fortgeführten Geschäft um sieben Prozent auf 73,5 Milliarden Euro stiegen, erhöhte sich der Auftragseingang um 16 Prozent auf 85,6 Milliarden Euro. Peter Löscher, Vorstandsvorsitzender der Siemens AG: "Mit einem starken vierten Quartal haben wir in einem unruhigen wirtschaftlichen Umfeld das Geschäftsjahr 2011 mit einem operativen Rekordergebnis beendet. Mit unserer neuen Aufstellung in vier Sektoren haben wir uns noch enger an unseren Kunden ausgerichtet. Siemens hat ein starkes Portfolio und steht auch in unruhigen Zeiten für Stabilität und Vertrauen. Wir sind gut gerüstet für ein moderates Umsatzwachstum im Geschäftsjahr 2012 und das mittelfristige Überschreiten der 100-Milliarden-Euro-Schwelle."

Germany and Israel share close economic ties. Israel is Germany second largest trading partner in the Middle East, while Germany is Israel's third largest trading partner after the United States and China. In 2010, Israel imported 3.3 billion Euros worth of products from Germany -- mostly high-quality processed goods. In that same period, Israel exported 1.5 billion Euros worth of products to Germany -- mostly high-tech products. Owing to the high priority given the defense sector, Israel possesses the prerequisite of an advanced industrial base able to keep abreast of technological innovation. Software AG, Germany's second largest software systems developer, acquired Israel's SPL Software in 2007. In recent years it has bought other Israeli firms, totaling over 77 million Euros. Through shared innovation platforms Israeli and German companies cooperate in technology and science. For instance, the German company Siemens made its first solar energy investment in Israel in August 2010, acquiring a 40 percent stake in Israel's Arava Power Company Ltd. for 12 million Euros. They also signed an agreement to build solar power plants. Israeli companies are also coming to Germany, in the last decade more than 100 Israeli companies have established a presence in Germany, helping stimulate its economy and adding jobs. Global climate change, a scarcity of resources and the accelerating energy demand from emerging markets such as China or India pose significant challenges to global and local energy supplies. The question as to how supplies can be secured for the future is becoming increasingly urgent. In this context, we dealt with the topic of "Building a Sustainable Future: Unlocking the Energy Challenge" during the Harvard Business Review webinar / panel discussion in partnership with Future Influencers, a community initiated by Siemens. This took place on 6th December 2012 in Doha, Qatar -- as a side event of Cop 18.
