William W. (Bill) Gothard (born November 2, 1934) is an American Christian minister, speaker and writer, and the founder of the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), notable for his conservative teachings. Among the several strong distinctives of his teaching have been encouragement of Bible memorization, large families, homeschooling, aversion to debt, respect for authority and extended principles related to identity, family, education, healthcare, music and finances.

At the height of his popularity during the 1970s, the Basic Youth Conflicts seminar with Bill Gothard was regularly filling auditoriums throughout the United States and beyond with attendance figures as large as ten thousand and more for a one-week seminar. In this way, he reached many in the evangelical community from the Baby Boomer generation during their teen years and years of young adulthood. Other seminars during this time included an advanced youth conflicts seminar and as well as seminars for pastors, physicians and legislators. Bill Gothard has credited a large influence to his parents and father, William Gothard, Sr. was a speaker at many seminars during the early years. William Gothard Sr. held high positions at organizations that included the Gideons, Child Evangelism Fellowship and Pacific Garden Mission in Chicago.^[1]

Bill Gothard received his B.A., in Biblical Studies from Wheaton College in 1957 and an M.A. in Christian Education in 1961 from the same institution.^[2]

Gothard started an organization in 1961 called Campus Teams,^[3] which in 1974 changed its name to Institute in Basic Youth Conflicts. Later, in 1989, the organization's name changed again to Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP),^[4] of which Gothard is currently the president and a board member.

Teaching[link]

Gothard's primary teaching, his "Basic Seminar," focuses on seven Biblically based "Basic Life Principles." Some^[who?] argue that Gothard's teaching is legalistic but he claims that he teaches principles rather than rules to avoid legalism. He claims that the seven principles are universal and people will suffer the consequences of violating these principles. This philosophy is similar to natural law based ethics. Just as a physicist discovers natural universal laws, the natural law ethicist believes that there are discoverable universal ethical principles. Gothard's principles are called Design, Authority, Responsibility, Suffering, Ownership, Freedom, and Success.^[5]

The design principle is that people should understand their specific purpose for which God created them. This is a similar principle that launched Rick Warren's best selling book, The Purpose Driven Life. Once a person understands his/her purpose and the purpose for other people, objects, and relationships in their life, then harmony and self-acceptance are the result.

The authority principle is that inward peace results when people respect and honor the authorities (parents, government, etc.) that God has put in their lives. One controversial aspect of this teaching is that the husband is the authority figure in marriage. While this principle is clearly Biblical (Ephesians 5, for example), some modern day Christians^[who?] believe that this view is outdated.

The responsibility principle is that a clear conscience results when people realize that they are responsible to God for every thought, word, action, and motive. Part of this principle is asking forgiveness from whomever has been offended. Personal responsibility begins with a person's thought life.

The suffering principle is that people can and must forgive others for the pain that they have caused them; pain is often a tool that God uses to develop character.

The ownership principle is that people are stewards, not owners, of their possessions. Gothard teaches that when people yield their rights to God, true security results.

The freedom principle is enjoying the desire and the power to do what is right. Moral purity is the result of true freedom. This is probably the most controversial principle because many of the examples of "wrong" like certain types of music and dress are not generally accepted as being "sinful" even by those^[who?] claiming to be evangelical Christians.

The success principle is that when people learn to think God's thoughts by meditating on and memorizing scripture, they make wise decisions and fulfill their life purposes.

In addition to the Basic Seminar, Gothard also has an Advanced Seminar and an Anger Resolution Seminar. He also has a 49-week "Daily Success" series where he expounds on the "Commands of Christ" found in the Gospels.

Gothard's "Total Health" training seeks to bring a Biblical view of sickness. He considers that there may be spiritual aspects of illness. His "Basic CARE Bulletins" and "Total Health Seminars" are offered to those who have attended "Basic" or "Advanced" or "Anger Resolution" seminars.

Gothard encourages homeschooling. IBLP publishes its own Advanced Training Institute (homeschool) materials.

Gothard teaches that dating is morally dangerous and that courtship is the better alternative. Gothard encourages parents to be involved in their children's courtship. The father, especially, should be involved in his daughter's relationships. He should at the very least have the right to say "no" when a man asks to marry his daughter.

Gothard’s teachings discourage dating and rock music, including Christian rock. Gothard teaches that women working outside the home are putting themselves under another man's authority and conflict will arise. He has warned that some toys such as Cabbage Patch dolls may cause destructive behavior in children.^[6]

Gothard teaches that some diseases have spiritual roots and to have suspicion of modern medicine.^[6]

Gothard continues to be the subject of much debate, with critics describing his teachings as authoritarian and anti-woman.^[7][8] Some people have written books, developed websites, and formed communities which complain of psychological, emotional, abuse as a result of Gothard's teachings.^[9] Gothard relied heavily on the philosophy of a patriarchy, going so far as to describe the father as a "hammer" which strikes the mother (chisel), to form the children into proper character.^[10] Various books, websites, and communities have been formed on the basis of claims to have been psychologically, emotionally, abused as a direct result of Gothard's teachings. Ronald B. Allen, now a Senior Professor of Bible Exposition at Dallas Theological Seminary, criticized Gothard as being "basically anti-woman".^[7] Additionally, after interviewing some former Gothard devotees, Sarah Posner reported that "his unyielding theology, including 'non-optional' compliance with seven 'biblical' principles (the 'basic' life principles), compliance with 49 'character traits,' and other periodic Gothard revelations, are contrary to the Bible and have wreaked havoc on their emotional and spiritual lives of [them and their] families." ^[8]

Several organizations exist for the purpose of ministering to those who have left Gothard's fold and exposing what they believe to be the heresies of his teachings; notable among them are Midwest Christian Outreach.

Saint Gotthard (or Godehard) (960 – May 5, 1038), also known as Gothard or Godehard the Bishop, is a Roman Catholic saint.

Life[link]

Gotthard was born in 960 at Reichersdorf (Ritenbach) near Niederaltaich in the diocese of Passau. His father was Ratmund, a vassal of the canons of Niederaltaich Abbey. Gotthard was educated at this place, studying the humanities as well as theology, under the guidance of a teacher named Uodalgisus.^[2] Gotthard then resided at the archiepiscopal court of Salzburg, where he served as an ecclesiastical administrator.^[2] After traveling in various countries, including Italy, Gotthard completed his advanced studies under the guidance of Liutfrid in the cathedral school at Passau.^[2] He then joined the canons at Niederaltaich in 990, and became their provost in 996.^[2]

When Henry II of Bavaria decided to transform the chapter house of Niederaltaich into a Benedictine monastery, Gotthard remained, as a novice, and then became a monk in 990 under the abbot Ercanbert. In 993, he was ordained a priest, and also became a prior and rector of the monastic school. In 996, he was elected abbot and introduced the Cluniac reforms at Niederaltaich.^[2]

He helped revive the Rule of St. Benedict, which then provided abbots for the abbeys of Tegernsee, Hersfeld and Kremsmünster to restore Benedictine observance, under the patronage of Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor.

He became bishop of Hildesheim on December 2, 1022, being consecrated by Aribo, Archbishop of Mainz.^[2] During the fifteen years of his episcopal government, he won the respect of his clergy.^[2] Gotthard ordered the construction of some thirty churches. Despite his advanced age, he defended vigorously the rights of his diocese.^[2] After a brief sickness, he died on May 4, 1038.

Gotthard's successors in the episcopate of Hildesheim, Bertold (1119–30) and Bernhard I (1130–53), pushed for his canonization.^[2] This was accomplished during the episcopate of Bernard, in 1131, and it took place at a synod in Rheims. There, Pope Innocent II, in the presence of Bernard and Saint Norbert of Xanten, officially made Gotthard a saint.^[2]

On May 4, 1132, Bernard translated Gotthard’s relics from the abbatial church to the cathedral at Hildesheim. On May 5, the first liturgical festivity in honor of Gotthard was celebrated. Miracles were attributed to the relics. Veneration of the saint spread to Scandinavia, Switzerland, and Eastern Europe. Gotthard was invoked against fever, dropsy, childhood sicknesses, hailstones, the pain of childbirth, and gout.^[2]

Furthermore, Niederaltaich Abbey made its famous abbot the patron saint of the abbey's well-known grammar school, the St.-Gotthard-Gymnasium.

Gotthard also became the patron saint of traveling merchants, and thus many churches and chapels were dedicated to him in the Alps.^[2] His hospice for travellers near Hildesheim (the "Mauritiusstift"), became famous.

According to an ancient Ticinese tradition the little church in St. Gotthard Pass (San Gottardo) in the Swiss Alps was founded by Galdino, Archbishop of Milan (r. 1166-76). Goffredo da Bussero, however, attributes the founding of the church to Enrico di Settala, Bishop of Milan from 1213 to 1230.^[2] The hospice was entrusted to the care of the Capuchin Order in 1685 by Federico II Visconti, and later passed under the control of a confraternity of Ticino.^[2]

Leonard Ravenhill (1907–1994) was an English Christian evangelist and author who focused on the subjects of prayer and revival. He is best known for challenging the modern church (through his books and sermons) to compare itself to the early Christian Church as chronicled in the Book of Acts. His most notable book is Why Revival Tarries which has sold over a million copies worldwide.^[1]

Biography[link]

Born in Leeds, in Yorkshire, England, Ravenhill was educated at Cliff College in England and sat under the ministry of Samuel Chadwick. He was a student of church history, with a particular interest in Christian revival. His evangelistic meetings during the Second World War drew large crowds. Many converts devoted themselves to Christian ministry and foreign missions.

In 1939, he married an Irish nurse, Martha. The Ravenhills had three sons: Paul, David, and Philip. Paul and David are Christian ministers, and Philip is a teacher.

In 1950, Ravenhill and his family moved from Great Britain to the United States. In the 1960s they traveled within the United States, holding tent revivals and evangelistic meetings.^[2]

In the 1980s, Ravenhill moved to a home near Lindale, Texas, a short distance from Last Days Ministries Ranch. He regularly taught classes at LDM and was a mentor to the late Keith Green. He also spent some time teaching at Bethany College of Missions in Minnesota, and some time in Seguin, Texas.

Among others influenced by Ravenhill were Ravi Zacharias, Tommy Tenney, Steve Hill, Charles Stanley, Bill Gothard, Paul Washer, Randy Goudeau, and David Wilkerson.^[3]

He was a close friend of pastor and writer A. W. Tozer.^[4]

Through his teaching and books, Ravenhill addressed the disparities he perceived between the New Testament Church and the Church in his time and called for adherence to the principles of biblical revival.

Tozer said of Ravenhill:

"To such men as this, the church owes a debt too heavy to pay. The curious thing is that she seldom tries to pay him while he lives. Rather, the next generation builds his sepulchre and writes his biography – as if instinctively and awkwardly to discharge an obligation the previous generation to a large extent ignored."^[5]

Ravenhill died in November 1994 and is interred at Garden Valley Cemetery in Garden Valley, Texas, near the grave of Contemporary Christian music artist Keith Green.

Mike Daly is an American producer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist who grew up in Roselle Park, New Jersey, United States. Daly attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston, graduating in 1994. Soon after, he joined the band Swales and recorded one album, What's His Name? for Bar/None Records.^[1] Daly first came to prominence as the Whiskeytown resident multi-instrumentalist / co-writer. He wrote or co-wrote many of the songs on the Pneumonia album and has contributed to all of Caitlin Cary's solo releases.^[2] In one incident, Daly dragged Ryan Adams, at the time the Whiskeytown frontman, away from security at The Fillmore when they attempted to restrain him after he kicked the monitors into the crowd.^[3]

Daly's songs have been recorded by such artists as Alanis Morissette, Jason Mraz, Lana Del Rey, Alberta Cross, Young the Giant, Jessie Baylin, The Plain White T's, Josh Kelley and Jimmy Barnes.^[4][5] Mike is currently writing and producing many artists, some with whom he has worked include Stephen Kellogg,^[6] the Pernice Brothers,^[7] Ambulance LTD, Patrick Park, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Marie Digby, Georgia, Sherwood, Rachael Yamagata, Young the Giant, Alberta Cross, Breanne Duren, Aslyn and Donavon Frankenreiter. Additionally, Daly has served as a panelist at the South by Southwest Festival, appeared on the Tonight show with Jay Leno, Good Morning America, Regis and Kelly, and Austin City Limits.

In 2008 Daly wrote his first book, entitled Time Flies When You're In A Coma: The Wisdom Of The Metal Gods, a book which the publisher describes as a collection of "Zen Questions, Daily Affirmations, Meditations, and Words of Wisdom" based on Heavy metal songs. It was released on October 28, 2008.^[8]
