The Gove Peninsula (12°17′S 136°49′E / 12.283°S 136.817°E / -12.283; 136.817) is at the northeastern corner of Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia. The peninsula became strategically important during World War II when a Royal Australian Air Force base was constructed at what is now Gove Airport.
The Gove Peninsula is on the west coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria within Arnhem Land, a vast tract of Aboriginal owned land on the Northern Territory coastline. The township of Nhulunbuy is the main commercial and service centre of the Peninsula and is 600 kilometres east of Darwin.
As Europeans started land exploration throughout Australia and subsequently settled closer to Yolngu homelands, conflicts with the Yolngu became more frequent. In 1931, an area of 96,000 km2 was proclaimed Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve. Today the Land Trust holds about 100,000 km2 as Aboriginal freehold land (with the exception of mining leases). The Gove Peninsula was heavily involved in the defence of Australia during World War II. There were three operational air squadrons based there at an airfield on the site on the present Gove airport and a flying boat base at Drimmie Head. The Peninsula derives its name from a RAAF navigator who died in a mid air collision.
Arnhem Land is one of the five regions of the Northern Territory of Australia. It is located in the north-eastern corner of the territory and is around 500 km (310 mi) from the territory capital Darwin. The region has an area of 97,000 km2 (37,000 sq mi) which also covers the area of Kakadu National Park, and a population of 16,230. In 1623 Dutch East India Company captain William van Colster sailed into the Gulf of Carpentaria and Cape Arnhem is named after his ship, the Arnhem, which itself was named after the city of Arnhem in the Netherlands.
The area covers about 34,000 square kilometres and has an estimated population of 16,000, of whom 12,000 are Yolngu, the traditional owners. The region’s service hub is Nhulunbuy, 600km east of Darwin, set up in the 1960s as a mining town (bauxite). Other major population centres are Yirrkala (just outside Nhulunbuy), Gunbalanya (formerly Oenpelli), Ramingining and Maningrida.
A substantial proportion of the population, which is mostly Aboriginal, lives on small outstations, but government support for these small settlements is fading. This Outstation movement started in the early 1980s. Many Aboriginal groups moved to usually very small settlements on their traditional lands, often to escape the problems (alcohol, petrol-sniffing, idleness) on the larger townships.
A short film exploring my little hometown of Gove (Nhulunbuy), located in East Arnhemland, Northern Territory, Australia. All of the clips were taken over the last few months learning how to fly a drone camera and work/edit with it's footage. I also captured a lot of aerial photographs during that time, which can be seen on my Instagram feed. Follow me at the link below! This is my first personal video project I have done for myself in awhile. Please leave a like and/or comment to let me know what you think! Links! This is the 2nd Memorial Ceremony in commemoration of the late G. D. Dhurrkay, held at Gunyangara' (Ski Beach) in the Gove Peninsula region of eastern Arnhem Land. Amongst other things, Mr Dhurrkay was an outstanding athlete and the first Yolngu man to make it to the AFL, a popular football code of which the AFL represents the highest level of professional competition in Australia. During his AFL career, 'Dhurrks' played for the Kangaroos in Melbourne, and the Fremantle Dockers in Perth. He also played for the Wanderers in Darwin during his NTFL days. Mr Dhurrkay was a ground-breaker in other ways, in particular, his contribution to community development and his service to the wider Miwatj region and beyond. He played critical roles as an employee of various community and government ...
