I'm not an Icelander, but I live with Icelanders and they made for me a traditional food - sheep's head. It looks ugly, but the food is delicious. Naudinga informacija ir įdomūs faktai apie Islandiją: www.islandija.info

Musician explains volcano's name
Eyjafjallajokull - pronounced ay-uh-fyat-luh-yoe-kuutl-ul - is the name of Iceland's volcano that threw up plumes of ash clouds causing airspaces across Europe to close down. Icelanders have frequently pointed out the rest of the world's mispronunciations of the volcano's name, which has been described as "strange" even by native Icelanders. Eliza Geirsdottir Newman, an Icelandic musician, sang an exclusive song to Al Jazeera to helped clarify the word's correct pronunciation. [April 19, 2010]

Icelanders split over repaying debt
Icelanders are voting on a new deal to repay Britain and the Netherlands for a debt incurred after the collapse of a major bank in 2008. The UK and Dutch government had compensated more than five billion dollars to savers who lost their money. A referendum last year resulted in a resounding 'no' vote. But as Al Jazeera's Rory Challands reports, voters are now divided over the issue.

Icelanders approve world's 1st "crowdsourced" constitution
Smari McCarthy, International Modern Media Institute, joins Thom Hartmann. As corporations seize control of more and more of OUR Constitution, thanks to the Supreme Court - the people of Iceland are rising up to take back THEIR own Constitution. Over the weekend, voters took to the polls in Iceland to approve a national referendum calling for a new Constitution to be approved in the wake of Iceland's financial crisis in 2008. That new Constitution was drawn up by a special panel of 25 citizens who took suggestions from Facebook and Twitter to draft the world's first ever "crowd-sourced" constitution. According to the results - 66% of the nation approved the new Constitution, which includes reforms such as nationalizing more resources, giving voters more power to call for their own referendums, and enacting term limits on the presidential office.

The Loneliest Icelander
Iceland just had one "troop" on the ground in Iraq, (actually a press aide, not a soldier--Iceland has no standing army), but that didn't stop Bush from counting them as an equal member of his disappearing "coalition." We aren't hating on you, Icelanders. We're jealous of what you enjoy--a lack of military entanglements, a climate that will age well in times of global warming, and a genetic predisposition for high cheekbones. We apologize to your entire nation for our accents here. Welcome home. Iceland, Eyjafjallajökull - May 1st and 2nd, 2010
So I saw all of these pictures of that volcano in Iceland nobody can pronounce the name of, so I figured I should go and do something that is not news footage but something more cinematic. But the flights to get over took forever as expected (somewhat). 4 days after leaving I finally made it, but the weather was terrible for another 4. Just before leaving it got pretty good for about a day and a half and this is what I managed to get.
Wish I had more time. I missed all the cool Lightning and the Lava of the first eruption. But I figure this will just be a trial run for another day.
I am of course accepting sponsors to send me back there for more please...!! haha

Midnight Sun | Iceland
BEST VIEWED IN HD AND FULLSCREEN (with scaling off)
Midnight Sun: A natural phenomenon occurring in the summer months north of the Arctic Circle and south of the Antarctic Circle where the sun never fully sets and remains visible 24 hours a day.
This short time lapse film was shot during the Icelandic Midnight Sun in June of 2011.
For 17 days I travelled solo around the entire island shooting almost 24 hours, sleeping in the car, and eating whenever I had the time. During my days shooting this film I shot 38,000 images, travelled some 2900 miles, and saw some of the most amazing, beautiful, and indescribable landscapes on the planet. Iceland is absolutely one of the most beautiful and unusual places you could ever imagine. Especially during the Midnight Sun when the quality of light hitting the landscape is very unusual, and very spectacular.
Iceland is a landscape photographers paradise and playground, and should be number 1 on every photographers must visit list. Iceland during the Midnight Sun is in sort of a permanent state of sunset. The sun never full sets and travels horizontally across the horizon throughout the night, as can be seen in the opening shot and at the :51 second mark in the video.
During the Arctic summer, sunset was at midnight and sunrise was at 3am. The Arctic summer sun provided 24 hours a day of light, with as much as 6 hours daily of "Golden light". Once the sun had set it wouldn't even get dark enough for the stars to come out, and they don't start to reappear until August.
My advice to everyone out there, photographer or not, is simple... You MUST visit Iceland sometime during your lifetime. You will never regret it.

The payment of bank debts by citizens went to referendum. The government was forced to create a Council to write a new constitution: a citizens' group - without politicians, lawyers or university professors -- who opened the discussion process to everybody and managed to approve by consensus a draft proposal. In Iceland, many citizens are now organized in associations and have substantial proposals for a society where everyone can participate. Let's meet the Icelanders that ...
