Right wing win in Israel may fuel tensions between Washington, Tel Aviv

It is widely believed that Israel today faces many challenges. Since the fall of western-backed leaders such as Hosni Mubarak in Egypt to Tel Aviv's military defeats at the hands of groups like Hezbollah, Israel's strategic position has suffered significant setbacks. But now something else has appeared which threatens Israel just as the Israelis are preparing to head to the polls. The elections are excpected to result in an unprecedented far right wing government headed by Benjamin Netanyhau. This government is expected to be even more dedicated to policies like settlement expansion, and critics argue that such a trend will lead Israel to the abyss. US president Barack Obama, in remarks leaked to the press , stated that Netanyhau did not know who Israel's best interests were. Obama also stated that the Israeli premier was leading Israel to near total isolation. Experts anticipate that the dynamic taking place in both Israel and the US will fuel further tension between both sides over issues like Iran and settlement activity. Obama's nomination of people like Chuck Hagel for secretary of defense has already led to speculations that the US and Israel would not see eye to eye. Hagel had previously urged for dialogue with Iran and is a staunch opponent of pre-emptive war, which is what Netanyahu is demanding. The changes taking place inside Israel add yet another source of concern for some Israelis and their allies. However it seems that there is no stopping this trend as ...
