The joy of being a linguist and the power of input.
I am sometimes criticized for calling myself a linguist. Here I discuss the meaning of the term. I also discuss the importance and convenience of input based learning and how important it was even in the Middle Ages.
I refer to two posts at my blog, and a video at youtube, here are the links .

Steven Pinker: Linguistics as a Window to Understanding the Brain
Steven Pinker - Psychologist, Cognitive Scientist, and Linguist at Harvard University
How did humans acquire language? In this lecture, best-selling author Steven Pinker introduces you to linguistics, the evolution of spoken language, and the debate over the existence of an innate universal grammar. He also explores why language is such a fundamental part of social relationships, human biology, and human evolution. Finally, Pinker touches on the wide variety of applications for linguistics, from improving how we teach reading and writing to how we interpret law, politics, and literature.

What is linguistics? How do linguists study language?
This brief introduction to linguistics asks simple questions about language and languages, then follows the various branches of linguistics that have arisen in attempt to answer those questions.
Take this presentation as a rapid tour through modern linguistics or as a thoughtful inquiry into what language is and how we could understand it.
For specific lessons that introduce many of these topics - including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, historical linguistics and logic - head to:

Linguist Rap
This is something else I did for my high school film class. I think it speaks for itself.
Lyrics
MC Chomsky in the house.
I've been searching and looking for something to learn,
I need a major in university, got nowhere to turn.
You can keep computer science, don't want no liberal arts,
It's all a mute point, 'cause I know where I'll start.
(Chorus)
'Cause I'm a linguist
(I study language all day long)
I'm a linguist
(Analyzing poetry and song)
The MC Hammer of grammar,
I'ma' send you all home
When it comes to linguistics,
I'm like Sir William Jones.
My folks don't approve, they think syntax is sin,
They can't handle a career choice that's so full of win.
Just 'cause it cost 40k to get my Harvard M.A.,
I still don't have a job, but that's okay.
(Chorus)
I know German to French, Greenlandic to Zulu,
Aramaic, Altaic, Suomi and Hebrew,
From the Indo-Europeans up to Sino-Tibet,
Learning all about languages is my raison d'être.
(Chorus)
Word.

THE LINGUISTS - Official Trailer
THE LINGUISTS (www.thelinguists.com) is a hilarious and poignant chronicle of two scientists—David Harrison and Gregory Anderson—racing to document languages on the verge of extinction. In Siberia, India, and Bolivia, the linguists confront head-on the very forces silencing languages: racism, humiliation, and violent economic unrest. David and Greg's journey takes them deep into the heart of the cultures, knowledge, and communities at risk when a language dies.
THE LINGUISTS world premiered at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, screened at more than 40 festivals worldwide, and aired on PBS in 2009. THE LINGUISTS is produced and directed by Seth Kramer, Daniel A. Miller, and Jeremy Newberger of Ironbound Films. For more information, visit www.thelinguists.com and www.ironboundfilms.com.

"When Languages Die" author/linguist K. David Harrison
Informative conversation with K. David Harrison, assistant professor of linguistics at Swarthmore College near Philadelphia and the author of the new book "When Languages Die: The Extinction of the World's Languages and the Erosion of Human Knowledge". He is the Director of Research at the Living Tongues Institute and was recently featured in the documentary called "The Linguists" which followed hands-on linguistic field work in countries around the world. In this fascinating interview, Harrison discusses the critical importance of the world's many threatened languages and the vital knowledge that each language uniquely packages and holds for all of us. Harrison also discusses the need for more trained linguistic personnel to go out into some of the remotest parts of the world to document these nearly extinct languages before they are lost to humanity forever.

On a research trip to a remote region in India to find speakers of two little-known languages, Associate Professor of Linguistics K. David Harrison (left) found the unexpected - a third language, Koro, that was not known outside the area. He documents these and other dying languages - and his attempts to revitalize them - in his new book, The Last Speakers (2010).
Harrison's efforts to document Koro garnered wide coverage: on global wire services such as the Associated Press and Reuters, national broadcast news sites including ABC News, CNN, and CBS News, as well as in major dailies such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, USA Today, the Philadelphia Inquirer, and the Los Angeles Times. It also appeared in The Times of India, BBC News, and Science Daily, among others, and he discussed it on NPR's All Things Considered.
Harrison is an authority on endangered and dying languages with particular interest in connections between language and biodiversity, ethnoecology, and cultural survival. He is also the author of When Languages Die: The Extinction of the World's Languages and the Erosion of Human Knowledge (2007). He and colleague Gregory Anderson lead the scientific research for the Enduring Voices Project, a partnership between the Living Tongues Institute for Endangered Languages they founded and National Geographic Mission Programs.
