The Civil Wars is a group composed of singer-songwriters Joy Williams and John Paul White. The two met during a Nashville, Tennessee songwriting session in 2008. After releasing a live performance album and a four song EP, their full length album, Barton Hollow, was released in 2011. The band won the Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance and Best Folk Album in 2012.
Williams and White met during a song writing session in support of Gloriana at a music studio in Nashville, Tennessee in 2008. Joy Williams said in a recent interview:
According to the duo's web site, they recorded their second performance at Eddie's Attic in Decatur, Georgia on April 8, 2009 and created a free Internet download called Live at Eddie's Attic, which has been downloaded over 400,000 times to date. In November, the duo released a digital extended play album, produced by Charlie Peacock, called Poison & Wine and the title song was featured on the TV show, Grey's Anatomy. In December 2010, the duo was featured in Paste's "Best of What's Next" column. The duo's web site says that the name of their band, The Civil Wars, and their thematic direction, is best summed up in the lyrics of the song "Poison & Wine". It is about the good, the bad, and the ugly of married life. Another inspiration for the band name is a famous quote, which says "Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle".
A civil war is a war between organized groups within the same nation state or republic, or, less commonly, between two countries created from a formerly united nation state. The aim of one side may be to take control of the country or a region, to achieve independence for a region, or to change government policies. The term is a calque of the Latin bellum civile which was used to refer to the various civil wars of the Roman Republic in the 1st century BC.
A civil war is a high-intensity conflict, often involving regular armed forces, that is sustained, organized and large-scale. Civil wars may result in large numbers of casualties and the consumption of significant resources.
Civil wars since the end of World War II have lasted on average just over four years, a dramatic rise from the one-and-a-half year average of the 1900-1944 period. While the rate of emergence of new civil wars has been relatively steady since the mid-19th century, the increasing length of those wars resulted in increasing numbers of wars ongoing at any one time. For example, there were no more than five civil wars underway simultaneously in the first half of the 20th century, while over 20 concurrent civil wars were occurring at the end of the Cold War, before a significant decrease as conflicts strongly associated with the superpower rivalry came to an end. Since 1945, civil wars have resulted in the deaths of over 25 million people, as well as the forced displacement of millions more. Civil wars have further resulted in economic collapse; Burma (Myanmar), Uganda and Angola are examples of nations that were considered to have promising futures before being engulfed in civil wars.
Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) was an American recording artist, entertainer, and businessman. Often referred to as the King of Pop, or by his initials MJ, Jackson is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by Guinness World Records. His contribution to music, dance, and fashion, along with a much-publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades. The seventh child of the Jackson family, he debuted on the professional music scene along with his brothers as a member of The Jackson 5 in 1964, and began his solo career in 1971.
In the early 1980s, Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music. The music videos for his songs, including those of "Beat It", "Billie Jean", and "Thriller", were credited with transforming the medium into an art form and a promotional tool, and the popularity of these videos helped to bring the relatively new television channel MTV to fame. Videos such as "Black or White" and "Scream" made him a staple on MTV in the 1990s. Through stage performances and music videos, Jackson popularized a number of complicated dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk, to which he gave the name. His distinctive musical sound and vocal style influenced numerous hip hop, post-disco, contemporary R&B, pop and rock artists.
I got a right to be out on my mind
I got a right to be who I am
Love me, love my problems
The good times and the rotten
The war is in me, the war is in you
The war is in everybody now
Shake this tone, out of control
They are fightin' with knives and forks
Demonstrating how democracy works
God's good and God is great
So I wear my happy face
The war is in you, the war is in me
The war is in everybody now
The wolf is loose, he's living in you
There'll be a celebration
Johnny comes marching home
His eyes are on the ceiling
It ain't no fashion show
A heavy situation
Does things to your skin
Although it ain't no party
Dying to get in
Sex is something if it's looking good
A ceasefire in the neighbourhood
We bleed and stain the carpet
We start our own republic
The war is in me, the war is in you
The war is in everybody now
The greatest look
In heaven above
There'll be a celebration
Johnny comes marching home
His eyes are on the ceiling
It ain't no fashion show
A heavy situation
Does things to your skin
Although it ain't no party
