Huge Fire Rages Through Lagos Lagoon Slum
Residents and firefighters battle to save waterfront homes and sawmills in one of Nigeria's poorest communities.A massive fire has ripped through one of the poorest suburbs in the Nigerian city of Lagos, burning down ramshackle homes and workshops. Dozens of buildings were destroyed as flames tore through Ebute Metta, a community along the Lagos lagoon where sawmills process timber brought in from across Nigeria. The huge blaze could be seen from the city's long Third Mainland Bridge, with people stopping their cars on the bridge to take mobile phone images of the fire. Firefighters fought to stop the inferno after locals tried in vain to put out the flames with buckets of water. Paul Apeti, a 48-year-old timber factory owner, said millions of people lived in the area and more than 250 properties had been burned down. "Fire consumed the whole place, we were fighting the flames ourselves until the firefighters got here," he added.t is unclear if anyone was injured in the blaze and Nigeria's emergency services have not commented. The fire was the second major one in the city in recent weeks. On Boxing Day a massive explosion ripped through a warehouse full of fireworks in a crowded neighbourhood in Lagos Island, killing one person and injuring at least 15 others. Fire remains a major danger in Nigeria, where many people store petrol and diesel in their homes to run generators for electricity. Lagos is the commercial hub of Africa's second biggest economy and is home to an ...

The Latest Naija Gist - would you prefer to live on the Lagos Island or on the Mainland? "I live in Maryland but I hate that place with a passion!" laughs one man. "The mentality of people there - god help Nigeria!" But not everyone agrees: "I prefer to stay at Ajegunle" says another man. "I don't think it's okay for people to live in such luxuries on the Islands." Watch full Nigeria Gist on whether you would prefer to live on Lagos Island or the Mainland here. The two geographical entities are separated by the Lagos lagoon... ...the 'Islands' or Lagos Island, Ikoyi and Victoria Island are the centre of business and finance for the whole of Lagos and even Nigeria, but it's also a notoriously expensive place to live. ... Lagos Mainland is where most of the city's 18'ish million inhabitants live - from Makoko slum to the Governor's Office in Alausa - it's a sprawling, exciting but sometimes dangerous place to live. But the argument, it appears, has not been solved today: "Life is much saner and comfortable on the Mainland," says one woman. "I would like to be on the rich part, on Lagos Island because life can be easier, you make good connections and for your kids growing up you prepare them for the future." **** Naija Gist, Lagos Street-life, Videos, Entertainment and more from Ajegunle - only on BattaBox.com ... and don't forget to share the story with your ...

Makoko Area
Makoko is a slum neighborhood located in Lagos, Nigeria. At present its population is considered to be 85840; however, the area was not officially counted as part of the 2007 census and the population today is considered to be much higher. Established in the 18th century primarily as a fishing village, much of Makoko rests in structures constructed on stilts above Lagos Lagoon. Today the area is essentially self-governing with a very limited government presence in the community and local security being provided by area boys. In July 2012, Nigerian government officials destroyed dozens of residences after giving residents 72 hours notice of eviction. One resident was killed in the action. Lagos may continue the destruction of this historic community in order to redevelop what is now seen as prime waterfront.

Nigeria: Makoko Demolition - "we were not given prior notice"
(Latest Nigeria News) As the Lagos government continues the Makoko demolition, residents claim they were not given notice before the men with chainsaws began to demolish their homes. "We were not given prior notice before the demolition," explains a local resident, shaking his head. The government claims to have given the area 72 hours notice with a letter accusing of the house of being a "environmental nuisance." According to news reports, thousands have been made homeless after men with chainsaws and machetes began to demolish the wooden shanties. It's estimated over 100000 people live in the community. Makoko slum is a waterfront community easily seen from Third Mainland Bridge where people live on shanties above the Lagos lagoon and travers the waterways in small boats. No alternative for housing or temporary accommodation has been put in place by the Lagos government.
