Babbitt: Portrait of a Serial Composer (Robert Hilferty documentary)
The American composer and teacher Milton Babbitt died Saturday, 29 January 2011 at age 94. For years, New York-based journalist and filmmaker Robert Hilferty had been constructing a documentary on Babbitt. It was a quirky, loving look at a man regarded by many as a composer of "difficult" music. Hilferty left the film unfinished when he died in 2009. Composer and former Babbitt student Laura Karpman has now completed Hilferty's film.

Milton Babbitt : Three Compositions for Piano
pf: Robert Taub In 1947, Babbitt wrote his Three Compositions for Piano, which are the earliest examples of total serialization in music, pre-dating Olivier Messiaen's "Mode de valeurs et d'intensités" by two years, and Pierre Boulez's "Polyphonie X" by four. The Composition for Four Instruments of the following year was Babbitt's first use of total serialism for instrumental ensemble. In other words: Babbitt owned those Frenchies.

Milton Babbitt- Lagniappe (1985)
Lagniappe by Milton Babbitt, for solo piano. Babbitt is one of the most important composers of the Serialist movement, and, along with Carter (and to a lesser extent Wuorinen), represents what basically amounts to America's response to what Boulez was doing over in Europe. Just a little piano piece, but it's one I really like, so I thought I'd share. It was written specifically for the performer here, who is Robert Taub. This recording comes from a set of complete piano works, and this particular piece is a juxtaposition of his earlier, more rigid 12-tone style, and his later contrapuntal style.

Milton Babbitt - Ensembles for Synthesizer (1964)
I just learned that Milton Byron Babbitt passed away last Saturday, January 29, 2011 at the age of 94. This is one of my favorite pieces of electronic music. This work actually took two years to complete; he had started developing it in 1962, and it was finally realized at the Columbia University Electronic Music Center in 1964. In this video, I included some biographical information concerning Babbitt and this piece.

Milton Babbitt - Canonical Form - Goldray [1/2]
Apologies for having to split this into two parts. I hoped it would be informative to provide another recording of what, by nature of its wonderful lyricism and use of register, is becoming one of Milton's classic piano works. The rest of Mr. Goldray's recording is well worth hearing. There are great differences between this and Robert Taub's well known performance, most obviously the fact that Goldray's is a full 4 minutes longer. Taub has chosen to take a tempo that is very close to what the score calls for. Because of this, his interpretation provides perhaps a more vivid glimpse into the overall structure and progression of the work. However, for a composer whose music is so oriented towards the significance of small details, it is by no means destructive to take a slower tempo if this results in greater clarity, and I believe that is what Goldray has done. He is able to very effectively bring out subtleties of rhythm and dynamics, and has a wonderful control of timbre. If anything, the slow tempo seems to emphasize the great lyricism of Babbitt's music, and makes the pauses (or fermate) between sections all the more disruptive.

MILTON BABBITT: "Three Compositions For Piano" (1947-48) from "Forbidden Planets"
This particular track is not an electronic work, but an atonal piano work. Makes me wonder why it was included. Wikipedia article on Milton Babbitt: en.wikipedia.org Links to "Forbidden Planets (Volume 1)": amazon.com: www.amazon.com Discogs: www.discogs.com Paragraph from liner notes: "The fated [Richard] Maxfield - who committed suicide in 1969 - had been a mature student at Columbia-Princeton University when Milton Babbitt taught there. Marrying quasi-algebraic formulae to music, Babbitt was a major champion of serialism in which the order of notes takes precedent over recognizable thematic sequence - and was instrumental in acquiring funding for a music department within Princeton for, so its charter read, 'composers desiring to compose with the expanded sound resources available on magnetic tape.'"

The Milton Babbitt Project
Visualizations of Milton Babbitt's "Semi-Simple Variations" (1957). This video illustrates several aspects of the Semi-Simple Variations: the twelve-tone rows of the four "lynes," the trichords formed through the associative harmonies, the thematic hexachord of the original row, and the rhythmic rows. Not included are the serial treatment of dynamics, the trichordal and hexachordal aggregates and the derivation of the different rows from the four main trichords of the piece. By Zalman Kelber Note: The version of this video on youtube is not of the best quality. As a result, some of the names of notes may be difficult to read.

Babbitt - Partitions and Post-Partitions
Milton Babbitt, the seminal 20th century composer, wrote Partitions in 1957, and Post-Partitions in 1966. He noted in the score that Post-Partitions should immediately follow Partitions. Note that Mr Babbitt indulged his whimsy in the title of "post partitions." Mr Babbitt's style of compostion is called "total serialism" by academics; "bleep blop" by musicians; and "is it over yet?" by the general public. Curious how it can all sound wonderful after a session with Mr Bong. Images by El Lissitzky. Created (by myself), edited and mastered in Digital Performer 5.13 (MOTU) using Ivory sound banks (Synthogy).
