Al Jolson (May 26, 1886 – October 23, 1950) was an American singer, comedian, and actor. In his heyday, he was dubbed "The World's Greatest Entertainer".
His performing style was brash and extroverted, and he popularized a large number of songs that benefited from his "shamelessly sentimental, melodramatic approach". Numerous well-known singers were influenced by his music, including Bing CrosbyJudy Garland, rock and country entertainer Jerry Lee Lewis, and Bob Dylan, who once referred to him as "somebody whose life I can feel". Broadway critic Gilbert Seldes compared him to "the Greek God Pan", claiming that Jolson represented "the concentration of our national health and gaiety."
In the 1930s, he was America's most famous and highest paid entertainer. Between 1911 and 1928, Jolson had nine sell-out Winter Garden shows in a row, more than 80 hit records, and 16 national and international tours. Although he's best remembered today as the star in the first (full length) talking movie, The Jazz Singer in 1927, he later starred in a series of successful musical films throughout the 1930s. After a period of inactivity, his stardom returned with the 1946 Oscar-winning biographical film, The Jolson Story. Larry Parks played Jolson with the songs dubbed in with Jolson’s real voice. A sequel, Jolson Sings Again, was released in 1949, and was nominated for three Oscars. After the attack onPearl Harbor, Jolson became the first star to entertain troops overseas during World War II, and again in 1950 became the first star to perform for G.I.s in Korea, doing 42 shows in 16 days. He died just weeks after returning to the U.S., partly due to the physical exertion of performing. Defense Secretary George Marshall afterward awarded the Medal of Merit to Jolson's family.

You know, for the longest time I used to completely despise black and white films. I thought they were incredibly hard to look at and they just looked weird to me. But I've come to realize that they have this special kind of beauty and magic that we can't really find in color films. Ginger Rogers once said that black and white films have "an incomparable mystique and mood" and now I completely agree with her. It's like they say, better late than never. :)

High angle M/S of a fairground boxing ring. A woman in a fringed leotard and knee length wrestling boots fights with a man in a vest and shorts. Several spectators sit and stand behind a rope to watch the fight. The spectators cheer and wave their hats. The woman lays several good punches on the man and he falls down in the ring. A man in a top hat comes into the ring and counts him out. He jumps up again and continues the fight. They battle it out, she knocks him over again. The ringmaster counts, looking at his watch, then shakes the hand of the female boxer. This material is older than 1920s, probably c1910.

For decades, "Baby Face" -- the 1933 film starring Barbara Stanwyck -- has been pre-Code 101. If you want to turn someone onto pre-censorship movies at their most fun, sleazy and outrageous, just take them to "Baby Face," and from there they'll be inspired to explore the whole era.
But last year, miraculously, "Baby Face" got even better. An archivist at the Library of Congress discovered a print of the original version of the film, before it was trimmed and slightly re-shot to get it past the New York state censor board in 1933. Make no mistake: In its familiar incarnation, "Baby Face" was already risque enough to qualify as one of the most notorious of pre-Code films, something that could never have been released in any form following the coming of the Production Code in 1934. But in its original version, it turns out to be even more fun and outrageous -- and a deeper and more complete experience, as well.
The original "Baby Face" opens for a one-week run at the Balboa, sharing the bill with "Night Nurse," a 1931 Stanwyck film that's just as amusing as "Baby Face" and, if anything, more perverse. ("Night Nurse" stars Stanwyck and Joan Blondell as a pair of nurses who stumble across a scheme to murder two children, as part of an insurance scam.) "Baby Face" tells the story of a woman from a sorry background -- her father was her pimp -- who goes to the big city, intent on becoming rich by enslaving men sexually.
The differences between the original and the release versions of "Baby Face" are small, and yet combined they spell the difference between a good three-star movie and a delightful four-star movie. In the original, Lily (Stanwyck) goes to the city, not just with the vague intention of sleeping her way to the top (as was the case in the released version), but with the decided intention to act according to Nietzschean principles. Thus, everything she does becomes part of a philosophical proposition. We know where she's coming from and how she's thinking, in a way that we didn't before.
The rawness goes beyond shock effects. It grounds the audience in a specific world. In this version, we discover, for example, that Lily's father has been pimping her out since she was 14. We also see how she makes it to New York. In a grim seduction scene that, unlike some that follow, isn't at all played for laughs, she has to have sex with a railroad worker in an empty freighter, in order to get a ride for herself and a friend.
If you've never seen Stanwyck in a pre-Code film, you've never really seen Stanwyck. Never in her later career, including "Double Indemnity," was she ever as hard-boiled as she was in the early 1930s. She had a wonderful quality of being both incredibly cool and yet blazingly passionate. Her cynicism was profound, and then, without warning, she would explode into shrieking, sobbing, saliva-spraying hurt and rage. What an indelible, one-of-a-kind talent.
If you do see "Baby Face," don't miss "Night Nurse." Over the years, I've taught classes in pre-Code movies, and I've routinely chosen "Night Nurse" over "Baby Face" as the best example of Stanwyck in this period. Now that "Baby Face" has been restored, choosing between the two will be more difficult. But with both on the same bill, that's a choice you don't have to make.

It was my birthday today (November 2), so I thought what better way to celebrate it than with a tribute to some of my favorite film couples of the classic Hollywood era.
And you know who else's birthday it was today? Burt Lancaster's. Yep, I was born on the same day as Mr. Muscles and Teeth himself. Isn't that awesome? :)
Also, Nanda, I owe you a big apology. I completely (and shamefully) forgot that you have already done a classic tribute with this song. I hope you don't get too mad at me for stealing your idea.

This Dorothy Fields-Jimmy McHugh standard was introduced by Walter Woolf King in the musical revue “Clowns In Clover” during its 1932 Chicago run. A year later “Don’t Blame Me” gained major national exposure by its inclusion in the score of the popular film “Dinner At Eight.”
This is one of four tracks from the only documented commercial recording session by the Chicago-based Agnew orchestra. See also “Trouble In Paradise” “My Last Year’s Girl” and “To Be Or Not To Be In Love.”
Disc courtesy of The Rick Colom Collection, digitally processed from the original 78rpm: (Royal Blue) Columbia 2793-D - Don’t Blame Me (McHugh-Fields) by Charles Agnew and his Stevens Hotel Orchestra, vocal by Stanley Jacobsen, recorded in Chicago July 25, 1933

"It's a long road that can't stop turning...but this is the only way the San Francisco folk solved a steep hill problem..." L/S of a very curvy road in San Francisco. Cars travel up it. Shot from the top of the road - cars travel down. Shot from the bottom again. "Our Cameraman took a ride on this crooked road and says "you don't need to go to sea to get seasick!" L/S of a car with cameraman visible standing on a board attached to the front. The car drives up the road. C/U of the cameraman on the front of the car as seen by the driver. C/U of the driver and passenger as seen from the cameraman's point of view.
The Pathe cockerel logo and the words "Pathe News" are inscribed on the windscreen of the car. The passenger takes a photograph of the cameraman filming him. The car makes its way up the winding road. "Course, mind you, he might have tried this way..." Sped up film of the cars roaring up the zig-a-zag road.
Was an item in Eve's Film Review issue number 605.
Note: excellent stuff of the cameraman. This is probably "Lombard Street" in San Francisco.

No title.
Slow motion footage of a female boxer - this time wearing a gymslip type outfit, thick stockings and shoes. She fights a man in white trousers and white jumper. There are no spectators, just an umpire who wears a suit. The woman lays a couple of good right hooks on the man. Intertitle reads: "But, in those days of our youth, Eve showed very forcibly that the Amazons then were also real "knockabouts", too!" Incomplete story.
Was item in Eve's Film Review issue 389.
Note: according to paper records the first section of this film was probably shot around 1910. It is quite likely that this incomplete story was comparing the "modern" boxing woman of today with the "Amazons" of yesterday.

From the 1929 film, "Say It With Songs." Yes, that's little Davy (Sonny Boy) Lee back again as Al's adoring son. As with most early sound films, this was shot live - no pre-recording or lip-synching. Jolson inserted whistling choruses in many of his songs for most of his career.

One of the only recordings available that Jolson made of this wonderful Irving Berlin ballad from his early years. He introduced the song originally in 1916.

SWANEE
(George Gershwin/Irving Caesar)
Lyrics:
I've been away from you along time
I never thought I'd miss 'ya so
Somehow I feel, your love is real
Near you I wanna be.
The Birds are singing it is songtime
The banjos strumming soft and low
I know that you yearn for me to swanee you're calling me
Chorus
Swanee - how I love ya, how I love ya
My dear old swanee.
I'd give the world to be among the folks in D-I-X-I-E-ven though my mammy's waiting for me,
praying for me down by the swanne.
The folks up north will see me no more when I get to that swanee shore
I love the old folks at home
Swanee - how I love ya, how I love ya
My dear old swanee. I'd give the world to be among the
folks in D-I-X-I-E-ven though my mammy's waiting for
me, praying for me down by the swanee.
The folks up north will see me no more when I get to that swanee shore.
Al Jolson (May 26, 1886 October 23, 1950) was an American singer, comedian, and actor. According to PBS, he is considered the "first openly Jewish man to become an entertainment star in America". His career lasted from 1911 until his death in 1950, during which time he was commonly dubbed "the world's greatest entertainer.
His performing style was brash and extroverted, and he popularized a large number of songs that benefited from his "shamelessly sentimental, melodramatic approach". Numerous well-known singers were influenced by his music, including Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, and Bob Dylan, who once referred to him as "somebody whose life I can feel".
In the 1930s he was America's most famous and highest paid entertainer. Between 1911 and 1928, Jolson had nine sell-out Winter Garden shows in a row, more than 80 hit records, and 16 national and international tours. Yet he's best remembered today for his leading role in the first (full length) talking movie ever made, The Jazz Singer, released in 1927. He starred in a series of successful musical films throughout the 1930s. After a period of inactivity, his stardom returned with the 1946 Oscar-winning biographical film, The Jolson Story. Larry Parks played Jolson with the songs dubbed in with Jolsons real voice. A sequel, Jolson Sings Again, was released in 1949, and was nominated for three Oscars. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, Jolson became the first star to entertain troops overseas during World War II, and again in 1950 became the first star to perform for GIs in Korea, doing 42 shows in 16 days.
According to the St. James Encyclopedia of Popular Culture, "Jolson was to jazz, blues, and ragtime what Elvis Presley was to rock 'n' roll". Being the first popular singer to make a spectacular "event" out of singing a song, he became a rock star before the dawn of rock music. His specialty was building stage runways extending out into the audience. He would run up and down the runway and across the stage, "teasing, cajoling, and thrilling the audience", often stopping to sing to individual members, all the while the "perspiration would be pouring from his face, and the entire audience would get caught up in the ecstasy of his performance".
He enjoyed performing in blackface makeup a theatrical convention in the early 20th century. With his unique and dynamic style of singing black music, like jazz and blues, he was later credited with single-handedly introducing African-American music to white audiences. As early as 1911 he became known for fighting against anti-black discrimination on Broadway. Jolson's well-known theatrics and his promotion of equality on Broadway helped pave the way for many black performers, playwrights, and songwriters, including Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, and Ethel Waters.

Lux Radio Theater, a long-run classic radio anthology series, was broadcast on the NBC Blue Network (1934-35); CBS (1935-54) and NBC (1954-55). Initially, the series adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films. These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences. It became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. Broadcasting from New York, the series premiered at 2:30pm, October 14, 1934, on the NBC Blue Network with a production of Seventh Heaven starring Miriam Hopkins and John Boles in a full-hour adaptation of the 1922–24 Broadway production by Austin Strong. The host was the show's fictional producer, Douglass Garrick (portrayed by John Anthony). Doris Dagmar played another fictional character, Peggy Winthrop, who delivered the Lux commercials. Al Jolson & Larry Parks Sing Together. A Tour de Force.
This webisode from the webseries "Joe Franklin Remembers" is about Joe Franklin remembering Al Jolson. Al Jolson (born Asa Yoelson; May 26, c. 1886 – October 23, 1950) was an American singer, film actor, and comedian. At the peak of his career, he was dubbed "The World's Greatest Entertainer".
His performing style was brash and extroverted, and he popularized a large number of songs that benefited from his "shamelessly sentimental, melodramatic approach". Numerous well-known singers were influenced by his music, including Bing Crosby, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Rod Stewart and others; Dylan once referred to him as "somebody whose life I can feel". Broadway critic Gilbert Seldes compared him to the Greek god Pan, claiming that Jolson represented "the concentration of our national health and gaiety."
In the 1930s he was America's most famous and highest-paid entertainer. Between 1911 and 1928, Jolson had nine sell-out Winter Garden shows in a row, more than 80 hit records, and 16 national and international tours. Although he is best remembered today as the star of the first 'talking picture', The Jazz Singer (1927), he later starred in a series of successful musical films throughout the 1930s. After the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was the first star to entertain troops overseas during World War II. After a period of inactivity, his stardom returned with The Jolson Story (1946). Larry Parks played Jolson, with the singer dubbing for Parks. The formula was repeated in the sequel, Jolson Sings Again (1949). In 1950 he again became the first star to entertain GIs on active service in the Korean War, performing 42 shows in 16 days. He died just weeks after returning to the U.S., partly owing to the physical exertion of performing. Defense Secretary George Marshall afterward awarded the Medal of Merit to Jolson's family.
Joe Franklin is an American radio and television personality from New York City, Franklin is credited with hosting the first television talk show. The show began in 1951 on WJZ-TV and moved to WOR-TV from 1962 to 1993. Joe today can be found on Bloomberg Radio where he continues to interview stars. Joe has befriended, met and interviewed over 100,000 American stars. In the webseries "Joe Franklin Remembers" Joe tells us never before heard stories and facts about our favorite stars.

Years later, the adults of a long lost puppy-love-triangle culminating in murder, are haunted by long suppressed fear, guilt and jealousy, resolvable only through further bloodshed.

The Milky Way (1936) is a comedy film starring Harold Lloyd. Directed by comedy veteran Leo McCarey, the film was written by Grover Jones, Frank Butler and Richard Connell based on a play of the same name by Lynn Root and Harry Clork which was presented on Broadway in 1934. An example of the popular screwball comedy genre of the time, and critically Harold Lloyd's most successful talkie, it tells the story of a Brooklyn milkman who becomes middleweight boxing champion. The Milky Way features supporting performances by Adolphe Menjou and Verree Teasdale. FOR ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSES ONLY. No copyrights implied.

Baby Face (Alfred E. Green, 1933) - Trailer
Lily Powers (Barbara Stanwyck) works as a barmaid in her father's factory-town saloon where she learns to deal with the unwanted advances of male customers. When her father dies, she moves to New York City with her maid, Chico (Theresa Harris), to become a ruthless gold digger. First she meets office boy Jimmy McCoy (a young John Wayne in an uncharacteristically clean-cut role) who helps her get a job at the Gotham Trust Company. From there, she seduces and discards various men (George Brent, Donald Cook, Henry Kolker) as she LITERALLY sleeps her way to the top of the company. Jealously between the men causes a murder scene, so Lily takes her furs and jewels and moves to Paris with Chico...

1933 Charles Agnew - Don’t Blame Me (Stanley Jacobsen, vocal)
This Dorothy Fields-Jimmy McHugh standard was introduced by Walter Woolf King in the musical revue “Clowns In Clover” during its 1932 Chicago run. A year later “Don’t Blame Me” gained major national exposure by its inclusion in the score of the popular film “Dinner At Eight.”
This is one of four tracks from the only documented commercial recording session by the Chicago-based Agnew orchestra. See also “Trouble In Paradise” “My Last Year’s Girl” and “To Be Or Not To Be In Love.”

On The Road To Zig-A-Zag (1933)

The Jazz Singer is a 1927 American musical film. The first feature-length motion picture with synchronized dialogue sequences, its release heralded the commercial ascendance of the "talkies" and the decline of the silent film era. The film is based on The Day of Atonement, a play by Samson Raphaelson.

Lux Radio Theater - Burlesque with Al Jolson, Ruby Keeler
Each show featured a scripted session with Garrick talking to the lead actors. Anthony appeared as Garrick from the premiere 1934 episode until June 30, 1935. Garrick was portrayed by Albert Hayes from July 29, 1935 to May 25, 1936, when the show moved to the West Coast. Cecil B. DeMille took over as the host on June 1, 1936, continuing until January 22, 1945.

Joe Franklin Remembers Al Jolson
Joe Franklin Remembers Al Jolson

The Strange Love of Martha Ivers (1946) [Full movie, English subs, Film Noir]
Years later, the adults of a long lost puppy-love-triangle culminating in murder, are haunted by long suppressed fear, guilt and jealousy, resolvable only through further bloodshed.
[In Sam's hotel room with Toni showing off a new bathing suit]
Martha: "The sun suit looks very well on her, Sam, she's got just the figure for it. She's a very pretty girl."
Toni: "I give another show at 8 o'clock."
Martha: "In your room or here?"
[Sam, commenting on Martha's marriage to Walter]
Sam: "How did it feel to become a woman, officially?"
Martha: "I felt like I'd been there before, too."
Directed by Lewis Milestone
Written Robert Rossen and John Patrick
Starring Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Kirk Douglas and Lizabeth Scott
The film "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers", produced and distributed by Paramount Pictures in 1946, fell into the public domain 1974 in the United States of America due to failure of copyright renewal.
