Batanes, Philippines
The Province of Batanes (Tagalog pronunciation: [ba'tan'es], (Ilokano: Probinsya ti Batanes), (Tagalog: Lalawigan ng Batanes), also called the Batanes Islands, is an island province comprising ten islands that are located in the Luzon Strait between the islands of Luzon and Taiwan. It is the northernmost part of the Philippines and is also the smallest province, both in terms of population and land area.
The island group is located about 162 km north of Luzon and about 190 kilometers south of Taiwan, separated from the Babuyan Islands of Cagayan Province, Luzon, by the Balintang Channel and from Taiwan by the Bashi Channel.
The provincial capital is Basco on Batan Island and the only other inhabited islands are Itbayat and Sabtang. The northernmost island of the province, making it the northernmost island in the Philippines, is Mavudis (Y'ami) Island. Other islands in the chain are Misanga, Siayan, Ivuhos, and Dequey.[1]
The province is officially in the region of Cagayan Valley.
The islands are part of the Luzon Volcanic Arc.

The people of Batanes are called Ivatan and share prehistoric cultural and linguistic commonalities with the Babuyan on Babuyan Island and the Tao people of Orchid Island.
This divided homeland is a result of the Dutch invasion of Taiwan in 1624 ( Dutch Formosa ) and Spanish invasion in 1626 ( Spanish Formosa ). The northern half of the Ivatan homeland, Formosa and Orchid Island which were formally part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, fell to the Dutch who were in turn expelled in 1662 by forces of the Chinese Ming Dynasty, led by the Chinese pirate Koxinga who then set himself up as The King of Taiwan.
The southern half of the Ivatan homeland, the islands of the Batanes, was reinforced and fortified by Spanish refugees from Formosa before being formally joined in the 18th century with the Spanish government in Manila.
The main languages spoken in Batanes are Ivatan, which is spoken on the islands of Batan and Sabtang, and Itbayaten, which is spoken primarily on the island of Itbayat. The Ivatan which is dominant in the province is considered to be one of the Austronesian languages. From college level down to elementary level, the language is widely spoken.[5]

[Taiwan] Let's go to Anping! Full video
Director: Rainer
Actress: Fannie
Edited by Rainer
Scene 1: (Narrator-Rainer)
Narrator: The history of Anping Castle dates back to the 17th century, when the Dutch occupied Tainan for international trade. At that time, the site was called "Zeelandia Castle".
The Dutch: Formosa is a wonderful place for us to develop our global trade.
On Saturday, April 30th, 1661, a Han invasion fleet, led by Cheng Ch'eng-kung, launched a violent attack to seize back Formosa.
The Dutch: What is that?
Cheng Ch'eng-kung: You are not allowed to stay here. This land belongs to the Han!
After a ten-month battle, the Dutch governor Frederick Coyett was forced to surrender and gave all of Formosa to Cheng Ch'eng-kung.
Scene 2: (Fannie-F) (Narrator-Rainer)
(At School)
F: Oh, God! (Wake up) What a weird dream. It's been a long time without dreaming about my hometown, Anping. I would like to go back. Do you want to go with me? (Picks up her camera and bag) Let's go! (Facing the camera)
(At Tainan train station)
F: I am now at Tainan train station. (Facing the camera) For the people who want to take a trip to Anping, you don't have to worry about getting lost on the road. You just need to take bus 99 and stop at Anping Castle (安平古堡). It may take you thirty minutes to get there. What are we waiting for? Let's go take the bus!
(At Anping Castle)
F: Here we are. Anping Castle is a very important and historic monument in Tainan. It is an ancient and priceless treasure. If you want to go inside the castle, you need to buy a ticket at the information desk over there and it will cost you NT$ 50.
(Inside Anping castle)
F: Here we are, Anping Castle. You can directly see the Watchtower over there. From this watchtower, you can see all of Anping. Do you want to take a look? Come on!
F: Wow! Isn't it beautiful? How Romantic!
F: Besides the Anping Watchtower, you can directly find Fort Zeelandia Exhibition Hall. Inside the Hall, there are lots of exhibits about the history of Anping. Because it is not allowed to record a video inside the hall, the best way to enjoy the treat is coming here by yourself.
F: Although these events have passed and have become history, we can still remember the achievements of the ancient people. Hanging around Anping Castle, I feel so relaxed by the breeze blowing through my body. It is really a different and special experience. You should come and enjoy this special trip.
Scene 3 (Fannie-F)
F: Now I'm in Anping Old Street. If you have the chance to come to Anping, you should visit not only Anping castle but also the street which surrounds it. There is a wide variety of local desserts and ancient tool stores. In addition, when you roam around the old street, you can see the ancient buildings. It is so cool!
F: Hey! I'm starving now. Let me introduce the most famous dish here -- Oyster omelet.
F: Wow! Here it is! It smells great. Look at the beautiful color balances between the vegetables and the eggs. The oysters look fresh and lush. The ingredients include sixty grams of oysters, five eggs, vegetables, two cups of water, a cup of yam powder, some lard and half a cup of chives.
F: By the way, it is easy to make. First, take half a cup of yam powder and mix it in a cup of water into a kind of starch, and then add the chives. Second, put the lard into a heated-pan and then add the starch with the oysters. Last but not least, fry the egg and add bean sprouts into the pan until the surface is transparent. Here it is - the most famous dish in Anping - Oyster omelet!
F: Oh my god! It is so delicious! Let me show you how to say "delicious" in Chinese. It is "好吃"(hǎo chī ).
Scene 4 (Fannie-F)
F: Hope you enjoy our video. Next time, if you have the chance to travel in Taiwan, please don't stay in Taipei and only go shopping in Taipei 101. There are many places to experience Taiwan's cultural diversity. See you next time in Anping. Bye!

At The End of Formosa
Yedda Palemeq's paper "At The End of Formosa—Indigenous Agency in Lonckjouw-Dutch Encounter (1636-1645)", presented in the 8th EATS Conference (May 14, 2011) in Ljubljana University, Slovenia. An excerpt of her abstract is as followed:
"The focus of this essay is Lonckjouw, an indigenous kingdom on the southernmost tip of Formosa, where the Dutch VOC ventured since early 1636 to open the way to the legendary gold in the east. It is a reconstruction of how local people of Lonckjouw reacted toward the Dutch advance strictly based on secondary and primary sources. It presents indigenous agency demonstrated by various indigenous villages in their resistance to and collaboration with the Europeans. The nature of indigenous agency reconstructed from colonial archives is still prone to debates. Without claiming a true or real indigenous agency, this reconstruction of a narrative of Lonckjouw-Dutch encounter shows how re-reading and re-writing are both essential to the writing of the history of people without history."

Formosa española
Spanish Formosa was a Spanish colony established in the north of Taiwan (then known as Formosa) from 1626 to 1642. Designed to protect Spanish and Portuguese trade from interference by the Dutch base in the south of Taiwan, the colony was short-lived due to the unwillingness of colonial authorities in Manila to commit men and materiel to defending it. After seventeen years the last fortress of the Spanish was besieged by Dutch forces, and eventually fell, giving the Dutch control over most of the island.
After landing at Cape Santiago (now Sandiao) in the north-east of Taiwan but finding it unsuitable for defensive purposes, the Spanish continued westwards along the coast until they arrived at Keelung. A deep and well-protected harbour plus a small island in the mouth of the harbour made it the ideal spot to build the first settlement, which they named Santissima Trinidad. Forts were built, both on the island and in the harbour itself.
In 1629 the Spanish set up their second base, centred around Fort San Domingo in Danshui

Globe Trekker - Taiwan
The Republic of China today consists of the island of Taiwan, an island 100 mi (161 km) off the Asian mainland in the Pacific; two off-shore islands, Kinmen (Quemoy) and Matsu; and the nearby islets of the Pescadores chain. It is slightly larger than the combined areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut.
History:
Taiwan was inhabited by aborigines of Malayan descent when Chinese from the areas now designated as Fukien and Kwangtung began settling it in the 7th century, becoming the majority. The Portuguese explored the area in 1590, naming it "the Beautiful" (Formosa). In 1624 the Dutch set up forts in the south, the Spanish in the north. The Dutch forced out the Spanish in 1641 and controlled the island until 1661, when Chinese general Koxinga took it over and established an independent kingdom. The Manchus seized the island in 1683 and held it until 1895, when it passed to Japan after the first Sino-Japanese War. Japan developed and exploited Formosa. It was the target of heavy American bombing during World War II, and at the close of the war the island was restored to China.
After the defeat of its armies on the mainland, the Nationalist government of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek retreated to Taiwan in Dec. 1949. Chiang dominated the island, even though only 15% of the population consisted of the 1949 immigrants, the Kuomintang. He maintained a 600,000-man army in the hope of eventually recovering the mainland. Beijing viewed the Taiwanese government with suspicion and anger, referring to Taiwan as a breakaway province of China.
The UN seat representing all of China was held by the Nationalists for over two decades before being lost in Oct. 1971, when the People's Republic of China was admitted and Taiwan was forced to abdicate its seat to Beijing.

Traveling 2 --Tamshui (Fort San Domingo; DAN SHUI HONG MAO CHENG)
Spanish fort constructed at the mouth of the Tamchuy (淡水, now Danshui) River. Another Western language name of the fort is San Domingo, while its Chinese name translates into "fort of the red-haired (紅毛城)."
Spaniards first noticed a port in the north of Taiwan in 1597, which was named Puerto Tamchuy. The Spanish occupied Quelang (雞籠, now Keelung) Port in 1626, and in the following year, they sent soldiers to the region around the Tamchuy River to trade for food supplies. These soldiers were attacked by local inhabitants, which persuaded Antonio Carreno de Valdes, the commanding officer of the troops stationed in Formosa, to send soldiers to retaliate. The Spanish likely established their base at Tamchuy soon after this event. Writing in 1930, the Spanish scholar Dr. Jose Maria Alvarez writes that Spanish troops were stationed in northern Taiwan by the year 1628.
In 1629 the Dutch East India Company dispatched a fleet of ships to sail from the Dutch base in Tayouan (大員) to northern Taiwan on a reconnaissance mission. The Dutch fleet entered the mouth of Tamchuy River on August 13th and discovered that some Spanish buildings surrounded by bamboo fences had been built on the land in the area. The two sides bombarded each other with cannon fire on August 15th. The Dutch later made illustrations to record the event. According to an extant Dutch map, one side of Fort Santo Domingo faced the river, while the three other sides were surrounded by barricades. A round fort with earthen walls was later constructed within the barricades, and 50 troops were stationed inside. Locals from around Tamchuy attacked the fort in 1636, but it was defended by the Spanish. The Spanish would give up Fort Santo Domingo in 1637, taking their personnel and weapons away from the Tamchuy River.
The Dutch conquered the Spanish base at Keelung in 1642, and in the following year, the Dutch established a fort at Tamchuy. The site of the Dutch fort was probably in the vicinity of the current site of Fort Santo Domingo. The Dutch sent soldiers and Chinese laborers from Teyowan to construct the fort, completing it at the end of the year and naming it Fort Antonio (安東尼城).
In 1661 (15th year of Yongli [永曆] Emperor) Zheng Chenggong (鄭成功) attacked the Dutch bases in Tainan. The Dutch troops stationed in Quelang initially withdrew from their fort in June. Dutch soldiers stationed in Danshui did not retreat to Tayouan until November, making a point to burn down their fortress before they left. During the reign of the Zheng clan, the fortress had already fallen into disuse. After the Qing (清) dynasty came to rule Taiwan, the fort was further left to ruin. In 1724 (2nd year of the Yongzheng [雍正] Emperor) the official in charge of Tamsui Subprefecture (淡水廳) Wang Qian (王汧) renovated the fort, adding a new walls and doors. However, because the layout of the port had changed, the fort lost its defensive capabilities. After a many years of neglect, the fort again fell to ruins. Following the Treaty of Tianjin (天津), the port of Tamchuy was opened to international trade. In 1867 (6th year of the Tongzhi [同治] Emperor) Britain leased the "old Dutch fort" as a consulate, adding crenellations and turrets to the roof, as well as a crenellated terrace to the south wall. During the Japanese period of rule over Taiwan, the British renewed their lease of the fort in 1912 (45th year of Meiji [明治] Emperor). After diplomatic relations between China and Britain were cut off in 1972, the fort returned to government management in 1980 because of foreign mediation. The fort was later classified as one of Taiwan's first-class historical monuments.

Fort Zeelandia (Chinese: 熱蘭遮城; pinyin: rèlánzhē chéng; Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Ji̍at-lân-jia Siâⁿ) was a fortress built over ten years from 1624--1634 by the Dutch Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie, in the town of Anping (Tainan) on the island of Formosa, present day Taiwan, during their 38-year rule over the western part of it. Although the site has been previously named Orange City (奧倫治城), Anping City (安平城), and Tayoan City (台灣城), the current name of the site in Chinese is Anping Fort (安平古堡).

Pirate, Preacher and Professor (IV-End)
This final scene brings Hambroek back to Coxinga's camp. He is determined to embrace death like a Christian soldier. Nevertheless, what the Pirate Coxinga really fears is not Hambroek the Preacher, but Leonard Blussé the Professor and Historian because he would write about Formosa and make him look bad in history. In the end, instead of taking the Preacher's life, Coxinga orders the decaptation of the Professor.
Dialogues in the play are given in old Dutch, and the narration is in modern Dutch.
