Ludgvan
Coordinates: 50°08′38″N 5°29′42″W / 50.144°N 5.495°W / 50.144; -5.495
Ludgvan (/ˈlʌdʒən/ LUJ-ən; Cornish: Lujuan) is a civil parish and village in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The village is 2 1⁄2 miles (4.0 km) northeast of Penzance. Ludgvan village is physically split between the area known as Churchtown, situated on the hill, and Lower Quarter to the east, adjoining Crowlas. For the purposes of local government, Ludgvan elects a parish council every four years and the principal local authority is Cornwall Council. The civil parish population at the 2011 census was 3,250, whereas the electoral ward population which also covers the above plus the surroundings up to the North Cornish Coast at Zennor was 4,145 at the same census.
The village has an Old Cornwall Society.
History
Like many communities in Cornwall the legendary origins of Ludgvan are attributed to the arrival of its patron saint, in this case Saint Ludowanus. However, the place-name appears to derive from the Cornish for place of ashes or burnt place. Ludgvan was mentioned in the Domesday Book (under the name of Luduhan) as falling within the manor of Ludgvan Lese, which at the time of record covered more of what is now the Penwith district including some parts of the modern parish of St Ives. The Lords of the manor of Ludgvan Lese kept certain shipping rights within the port of St Ives up to and possibly beyond the 19th-century. Ludgvan Lease now exists as a hamlet within the parish. At the time of Domesday Book the manor had 3 hides of land and land for 15 or 30 ploughs. It was held by Richard from Robert, Count of Mortain; there were 12 ploughs, 8 serfs, 14 villeins and 40 smallholders. There were 300 acres of pasture, 27 unbroken mares, 22 cattle, 17 pigs and 140 sheep. The value of the manor was £3 sterling though it had formerly been worth £5.

Ludgvan Church is a church dedicated to St Paul. It is found near Penzance in Penwith, Cornwall. The church dates from the 15th century however there has been a church here for much longer and the two ancient crosses in the churchyard show that this site has been used for religious purposes since Early Christianity. When the church was first built, it was dedicated to Saint Ludowanus however is now dedicated to Saint Paul. The South Aisle is newer than the rest of the church and dates from 1840. It replaces a transept and porch. It is said that Ludgvan Church was the last church which conducted services purely in Cornish, however Towednack Church, also in Penwith, also has this claim. Cornwall Lockdown Bike Ride - Trencrom, Nancledra, Ludgvan & Crowlas

We live very close to the National Trust owned Trencrom Hill which is where this circular bike ride begins. The graveyard here, just north of Penzance, is haunted by an exceptionally tall figure, swathed from head to foot in white, that has been reported by many people of all ages over the years; a figure that not a few find frightening and a figure that invariably disappears into the solid churchyard wall. Also there are the ghosts of a young man and woman, hand in hand. I talked with one witness, a stranger to the area who knew nothing about any ghosts in the graveyard at Ludgvan or anywhere else, and he told me he became lost while walking in the locality one night in the middle of a storm. As he tried to decide on his best course of action he thought he would make enquiries at the next house he came to, when suddenly he became aware that he was being followed by a tall, white figure, a form that disconcertingly kept the same distance behind him, stopping when he stopped and hurrying forward when he hurried forward. After a while our traveller found himself alongside a churchyard wall, over which he could see the drenched gravestones gleaming in the wet moonlight. He looked behind him and saw the tall white figure was still there and still the same distance away as always. Suddenly, as he watched, the figure turned and disappeared in the direction of Ludgvan graveyard. He saw it no more and soon found his bearings. READ ALL HERE

Evidence for it being a saint's name includes documents in which it is named St Ludgvan and records of its name as Lewdegran and Ludewon. In recent times Ludgvan feast has celebrated St Lewdegran.
Ludgvan was mentioned in the Domesday Book (under the name "Luduhan") as falling within the manor of Ludgvan Lese, which at the time of record covered more of what is now the Penwith district including some parts of the modern parish of St Ives.The Lords of the manor of Ludgvan Lese kept certain shipping rights within the port of St Ives up to and possibly beyond the 19th century.

Ludgvan Church is a church dedicated to St Paul. It is found near Penzance in Penwith, Cornwall.
The church dates from the 15th century however there has been a church here for much longer and the two ancient crosses in the churchyard show that this site has been used for religious purposes since Early Christianity. When the church was first built, it was dedicated to Saint Ludowanus however is now dedicated to Saint Paul. The South Aisle is newer than the rest of the church and dates from 1840. It replaces a transept and porch.
It is said that Ludgvan Church was the last church which conducted services purely in Cornish, however Towednack Church, also in Penwith, also has this claim.
Ludgvan Church is part of the Mount's Bay United Benefice which comprises of the churches of Ludgvan Church, St Hilary Church, Marazion Church and Perranuthnoe Church. The church which is part of the castle on St Michael's Mount is not included.
The parish of Ludgvan is bordered by the parishes of St Ives, St Erth, St Hilary, Marazion, Penzance, Madron, and Towednack.

From Trencrom I ride on through the village of Nancledra, Ludgvan, and Crowlas.
You'll see that this bike ride is done on virtually deserted country lanes and minor roads.
I'm lucky to live so close to such beautiful places in Cornwall and this bike ride is literally on my doorstep. We're now well into the Coronavirus Lockdown in Cornwall and the rest of the UK and I'm limiting my bike rides to 1 - 2 times a week.

Ludgvan (/ˈlʌdʒən/ LUJ-ən; Cornish: Lujuan) is a civil parish and village in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. The village is 2 1⁄2 miles (4.0 km) northeast of Penzance. Ludgvan village is physically split between the area known as Churchtown, situated on the hill, and Lower Quarter to the east, adjoining Crowlas. For the purposes of local government, Ludgvan elects a parish council every four years and the principal local authority is Cornwall Council. The civil parish population at the 2011 census was 3,250, whereas the electoral ward population which also covers the above plus the surroundings up to the North Cornish Coast at Zennor was 4,145 at the same census.
The village has an Old Cornwall Society.
History
Like many communities in Cornwall the legendary origins of Ludgvan are attributed to the arrival of its patron saint, in this case Saint Ludowanus. However, the place-name appears to derive from the Cornish for place of ashes or burnt place. Ludgvan was mentioned in the Domesday Book (under the name of Luduhan) as falling within the manor of Ludgvan Lese, which at the time of record covered more of what is now the Penwith district including some parts of the modern parish of St Ives. The Lords of the manor of Ludgvan Lese kept certain shipping rights within the port of St Ives up to and possibly beyond the 19th-century. Ludgvan Lease now exists as a hamlet within the parish. At the time of Domesday Book the manor had 3 hides of land and land for 15 or 30 ploughs. It was held by Richard from Robert, Count of Mortain; there were 12 ploughs, 8 serfs, 14 villeins and 40 smallholders. There were 300 acres of pasture, 27 unbroken mares, 22 cattle, 17 pigs and 140 sheep. The value of the manor was £3 sterling though it had formerly been worth £5.
