Original Dixieland Jass Band (ODJB) was founded in New Orleans in 1916. Their first jazz recording is dated 1917. In late 1917 it changed the name's spelling to "Jazz." L'ODJB first members were: Larry Shields (clarinet), Eddie Edwards (trombone), Henry Ragas (piano), Tony Sbarbaro (drums) e Nick LaRocca (cornet).
Tiger Rag was recorded and copyrighted by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band in 1917. It was one of the bands greatest hits. The band itself consists of 5 members who are drummer Tony Sbarbaro (aka Tony Spargo), trombonist Edwin "Daddy" Edwards, cornetist Dominick James "Nick" LaRocca, clarinetist Larry Shields, and pianist Henry Ragas. I hope you will enjoy this catchy tune.
Original Dixieland Jazz Band plays "Dixie Jass Band One Step" on Victor 18255 recorded on February 26, 1917. This first jazz disc was influential in 1917 the way Beatles records were influential in 1964! This ODJB debut record helped create a jazz craze in 1917. The two performances on the first jazz disc are outstanding and must have seemed refreshing to listeners during World War I since nothing similar to this "jass" had been recorded before. The performances do share one weakness--the band repeats without variation all sections of both numbers, making for a somewhat monotonous delivery. Members play at full volume throughout the performances, which therefore never reach a climax. At that time the group consisted of cornetist Dominic ("Nick") James LaRocca, clarinetist Larry Shiel...
Original Dixieland Jass Band was a New Orleans, Dixieland Jazz band that made the first jazz recordings early in 1917, their "Livery Stable Blues" became the first issued Jazz single. The group composed and made the first recordings of many jazz standards, the most famous being "Tiger Rag". In late 1917 it changed the name to "Jazz." The band consisted of five musicians who had previously played in the Papa Jack Laine bands, a diverse and racially integrated collection of musicians who played for parades, dances, and advertising in New Orleans. The ODJB were frequently billed as the "Creators of Jazz", because they were the first band to record jazz commercially and to have hit recordings in the new genre. The appellation is accurate in that they were the first band to create successful...

PALESTEENA (Lena From Palesteena) Shimmy by J. Russel Robinson & Con Conrad In the Bronx of New York City Lived a girl, she's not so pretty Lena is her name. Such a clever girl is Lena How she played her concertina Really, it's a shame. She's such a good musician She got a swell position To go across the sea to entertain. And so they shipped poor Lena Way out to Palesteena From what they tell me, she don't look the same. They say that Lena is the Queen o' Palesteena Just because she plays the concertina. She only knows one song, She plays it all day long Sometimes she plays it wrong, But still they love it What more of it I heard her play once or twice. Oh! Murder! Still, it was nice. All the girls, they dress like Lena Some wear oatmeal, some Farina Down old ...

The Original Dixieland Jazz band (who at first called them self The Original Dixieland Jass Band) created jazz music, and this was their first jazz song. Livery Stable Blues was written in 1917. The band, which lasted from 1916-1925, consists of five members. There is drummer Tony Sbarbaro, trombonist Edwin "Daddy" Edwards, cornetist Dominick James "Nick" LaRocca, clarinetist Larry Shields, and pianist Henry Ragas. The band will never be forgotten, for they created a whole new genre of music.
A later recording by the world´s first recorded jazz formation.

Original Dixieland Jazz Band plays "Bow Wow Blues (My Mama Treats Me Like A Dog)" on Victor 18850, recorded December 1, 1921. The ODJB's final Victor session was on December 1, 1921, which produced only "Bow Wow Blues (My Mamma Treats Me Like a Dog)" (18850), composed by Cliff Friend and Nat Osborne. For the first time, an ODJB performance was issued with another artist on a Victor disc's reverse side, in this case the Benson Orchestra of Chicago performing "Railroad Blues." The ODJB's final Victor performance shared with one of its first, "Livery Stable Blues," the comic imitation of animals. "Livery Stable Blues" is far more significant since nothing like it or its companion piece, "Dixie Jass Band One-Step," had ever been recorded before. "Bow Wow Blues," though a fine performanc...

DIXIELAND JASS BAND ONE-STEP by the Original Dixieland 'Jass' Band, recorded in 1917. This is an early pressing of this recording. The tune was apparently from a composition called That Teasing Rag written by Joe Jordan, and when he heard it, he sued Victor and won. Subsequent pressings are titled: DIXIE JASS BAND ONE-STEP Introducing "That Teasing Rag" Also, this was apparently Victor's first issue of a jazz (Jass) record. Cool!
