Brisley is a village in the English county of Norfolk located about halfway between Fakenham and East Dereham. It covers an area of 4.90 km² (1.89 sq mi) and had a population of 276 in 117 households at the 2001 census The population at the 2011 Census was 281. The Village is located along the B1145 a route which runs between King's Lynn and Mundesley. English: habitational name from a place in Norfolk named in Old English with briosa ‘gadfly’ (Horsefly) + leah ‘woodland clearing’. Brisley although not recorded in the Domesday Book, had risen to become the 8th most affluent, out of 31 parishes in the Launditch hundred, by the time of the 1334 Lay Subsidy.

Notable buildings

St Bartholomews Church

St Bartholomews Church was entirely rebuilt in the period 1370–1460. It seems probable that the money for this great rebuilding was derived from wool, which was Brisley’s main source of wealth at that time and the probable reason for its rapid rise in prosperity in the 14th century.

Bruce Lee

Bruce Lee (Chinese: 李小龍; born Lee Jun-fan, Chinese: 李振藩; November 27, 1940 – July 20, 1973) was a Hong Kong American martial artist, action film actor, martial arts instructor, philosopher, filmmaker, and the founder of Jeet Kune Do. Lee was the son of Cantonese opera star Lee Hoi-Chuen. He is widely considered by commentators, critics, media and other martial artists to be one of the most influential martial artists of all time, and a pop culture icon of the 20th century. He is often credited with helping to change the way Asians were presented in American films.

Lee was born in Chinatown, San Francisco on November 27, 1940 to parents from Hong Kong and was raised in Kowloon with his family until his late teens. He was introduced to the film industry by his father and appeared in several films as a child actor. Lee moved to the United States at the age of 18 to receive his higher education, at the University of Washington, at Seattle and it was during this time that he began teaching martial arts. His Hong Kong and Hollywood-produced films elevated the traditional Hong Kong martial arts film to a new level of popularity and acclaim, sparking a surge of interest in Chinese martial arts in the West in the 1970s. The direction and tone of his films changed and influenced martial arts and martial arts films in the United States, Hong Kong and the rest of the world.

Arbeit macht frei

"Arbeit macht frei" (German pronunciation: [ˈaɐ̯baɪt ˈmaxt ˈfʁaɪ]) is a German phrase meaning "work sets you free." The slogan is known for appearing on the entrance of Auschwitz and other concentration camps.

Origin

The expression comes from the title of a novel by German philologist Lorenz Diefenbach, Arbeit macht frei: Erzählung von Lorenz Diefenbach (1873), in which gamblers and fraudsters find the path to virtue through labour. The phrase was also used in French ("le travail rend libre!") by Auguste Forel, a Swiss entomologist, neuroanatomist and psychiatrist, in his "Fourmis de la Suisse" ["Ants of Switzerland"] (1920). In 1922, the Deutsche Schulverein of Vienna, an ethnic nationalist "protective" organization of Germans within the Austrian empire, printed membership stamps with the phrase Arbeit macht frei.

Use by the Nazis

The slogan "Arbeit macht frei" was placed at the entrances to a number of Nazi concentration camps. The slogan's use in this instance was ordered by SS General Theodor Eicke, inspector of concentration camps and second commandant of Dachau Concentration Camp.

Stuart Brisley

Stuart Brisley (born 1933) is a British artist.

Brisley studied at Guildford School of Art from 1949 to 1954 and at the Royal College of Art from 1956 to 1959. In 1959–60 he attended the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich, Germany, and from 1960 to 1962 studied at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida, in the United States.

In 1968 he took part in the occupation of Hornsey College of Art by staff and students, the "Hornsey sit-in".

In the 1960s and 1970s he was active as a performance artist; his works were inspired by Marxist political ideas, and frequently used extended duration as an aspect of the performance. In the 1980s he turned to sculpture and installation art.

After a long academic career, Brisley is a Professor Emeritus of the Slade School of Fine Art.

Holly Brisley

Holly Brisley (born 11 January 1978) is an Australian actress and television presenter. She began her career at the age of 17 on Agro's Cartoon Connection (1995–97) and more recently portrayed Amanda Vale-Baker on Home and Away (2005–09). Her most successful film roles include Garage Days (2001) and The Crop (2002).

Early life

Brisley was born in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. As Holly grew up, she excelled at speech and drama and joined the Paradise Performer's Dance Academy, where she participated in various classes such as jazz, ballet and tap dancing, and also took part in eisteddfods, winning many awards.

Career

By the age of 13 she was on the books of the Studio Search Agency on the Gold Coast, with her first roles being the Australian telemovies The Flood: Who Will Save Our Children? in 1993 and Official Denial in 1994.

It was not until Holly began her regular television career in 1995 on the Logie Award winning children’s program Agro's Cartoon Connection that she began to receive recognition. She would later host The Looney Tunes Show in a more adult style, along with World's Craziest Videos and various shows for Foxtel. Holly was ranked 5th (2000) and 29th (2001) in FHM's Australia's 100 Sexiest Women.
