Ava Gardner: The Femme Fatale
Tomorrow is December 24th, Ava Lavinia Gardner's birthday. No one looked better(!) in a one-strap (or even two) black gown as the first third of this video show her at her best in The Killers and The Bribe. Ava Gardner was the ultimate, exotic-looking femme fatale, often caught in a love triangle as in The Barefoot Countessa, Bhowani Junction or Mogambo. She had a sexy voice which was sadly often dubbed for singing. (Supposedly she was dubbed here even at the beginning of the song when she lights up but it seems so vintage Ava). She was her own person who didn't mind going barefoot in the grass, making snappy remarks about her sex life, using colorful language or romancing Mickey Rooney or Robert Taylor. The love of her life was Frank Sinatra who sings the middle song "I'm a Fool to Want You" when he and Ava split. Movies included: The Bribe, The Killers, Mogambo, Bhowani Junction, The Barefoot Contessa, On the Beach, and Knights of the Round Table. Songs include a gorgeous version of Once Upon a TIme in the West (with Ennio Morricone and YoYo Ma) and the Theme from Marco Polo (last song, by Ennio Morricone) which I feel really fits the femme fatale, fragile but dangerous woman she often played. The crescendo from Marco Polo was timed to her scene in The Barefoot Contessa since I felt that was perfect for her power over men (the scene on the boat). I choose to focus on the limelight in The Killers and the Bribe in the first third, gorgeous stills of Ava in the middle when ...

Show Boat - Ava Gardner 's own voice - Can't Help Lovin' That Man
This audio track is slightly altered. For the exact speed, click: vimeo.com . Here's Ava's own vocal track for this great song - she was dubbed by Annette Warren in the released film. Can someone tell me why?? From "Ava: My Story" "Now, I can sing. I do not expect to be taken for Maria Callas, Ella Fitzgerald, or Lena Home, but I can carry a tune well enough for the likes of Artie Shaw to feel safe offering to put me in front of his orchestra. But since Julie's two songs, "Bill" and "Can't Help Loving That Man," are so beloved by everyone, I decided to work as hard as I could to fit the bill. I even found this marvelous teacher, who'd worked with both Lena and Dorothy Dandridge, and we slaved away for several weeks and produced a test record of those two songs. Then, rather nervously, I took my life into my hands and gave the record to Arthur Freed himself, God Almighty of musical productions. I don't think the son of a bitch ever even listened to it He just put it on a shelf and delivered the usual studio ultimatum: "Now, listen, Ava, you can't sing and you're among professional singers." So that settled that one. Or did it? Because the singer they'd chosen to dub my singing had a high, rather tiny voice, totally inappropriate when it was paired with my own speaking voice. The studio spent thousands and thousands of dollars and used the full MGM orchestra trying to get this poor girl right. I mean, there was nothing wrong with her in the first place, except for the ...

The Beauty of Ava Gardner
REPOST: The audio of this slideshow was turned off by YouTube because of the third song of Michael Buble, so I changed it and repost this video. "I first met Ava Gardner in 1942, she was 20 and I was 13. She was simply and in every way one of the most beautiful girls that one had ever seen in one's life. Her body was absolutely extraordinary, the way all her facial features were placed was perfect, she was classically beautiful. And her spirit was quite adorable. It's very strange to see that sort of tenderness radiating out of somebody that exquisitely beautiful...She didn't like herself. And so everyone felt wildly protective about Ava, and therein of course, lies madness. The vulnerability was part of her great appeal... Ava was unique because she was an imperial creature with a great peasant streak, which is a miraculous combination to find...Hers was the most unpretentious elegance I ever knew... ...And as the light slowly came in, it was like a painting happening. It was the first time in years I'd seen her with all the war paint on, and I was devastated. "Good God, you really are gorgeous....Yes, you are. You are really some beautiful thing..." (Roddy McDowall)

Ava Gardner: Your Body Is Wonderland
REPOST "She was very free, I mean, nothing embarassed her. She was very comfortable with her body. I remember going up to her apartment one day, she was getting ready to go out, and she wanted to borrow a pair of earrings. Her door was open...And she was in front of the mirror putting some makeup on, and she was standing there nude. It was rather shocking for me. And she had the MOST gorgeous body, and the complexion and the hair, I mean she was just BEAUTIFUL. And she was quite comfortable being like that....and it made me very uncomfortable because I felt quite UGLY next to her." (Candy Toxton, actress, Ava's neighbour)

COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER: I do not own any of the material used in this video. All material belongs to their respective owners. Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use", including non-profit, educational or personal. This is purely a fan video. No copyright infringement intended. When I read Ava Gardner's autobiography My Story, I was taken aback at what an amazing woman she was from the glamorous regular on the Hollywood social scene. Yes we always see Ava at the top clubs with friends Lana Turner and husbands Frank Sinatra, Artie Shaw and Mickey Rooney. Yes we always saw an immaculate goddess make men swoon in The Killers, The Barefoot Contessa and Mogambo. Away from that star is a truly inspiring woman. A simple upbringing, and high moral values, Ava Gardner experienced many traumas in her lifetime, only to come out on top. One of the most beautiful women in the world, Ava Gardner is not only a great of the screen, but a woman whom we should all admire. The song is She's Like The Wind sang by Patrick Swayze. Hope you enjoy!
