Parivartini or Parsva Ekadasi-Vamana Ekadashi-15th September 2013 (Sunday)
http://www.drikpanchang.com/ekadashis/parivartini/parivartini-ekadashi-date-time.html Parivartini or Parshva Ekadashi Brahma-vaivarta Purana. Sri Yudhishthira Maharaja asked of Lord Sri Krishna, "What is the name of that Ekadashi that occurs during the light fortnight (shukla paksha) of the month of Bhadrapada (August-September "Hrishikesha mase") ? The Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Sri Krishna addressed His devoted Yudhishthira as follows, "This Ekadashi, Oh Yudhishthira, is called Vamana Ekadashi, and it bestows upon those who observe it both great merit and ultimate liberation from material bondage. Therefore, because it removes all one's sinful reactions, it is also called Jayanti Ekadashi. "While observing this holy fast, a Vaishnava should lovingly worship the Supreme Lord in His form as Vamandeva, the dwarf incarnation, whose eyes are like lotus petals. The reason this Ekadashi is so auspicious is that it celebrates the day when the sleeping Lord Vishnu turns over on His other side; thus it is also known as Parivartini Ekadashi." Maharaja Yudhishthira then asked of the Lord, "Oh Janardana, please clear up a question I have. How is it that the Supreme Lord sleeps and then turns over on His side? Oh Lord, when You are asleep what happens to all the other living entities? Please also tell me how You bound the king of the demons, Bali Daityaraj (Bali Maharaja), as well as how one may please the Brahmans. How does one observe Chaturmasya, which You mention in the Chaturmasya-mahatmya of the Bhavishya Purana? "In the Treta-yuga there once was a king of the name Bali. Though born in a family dynasty of demons (daityas), he was very devoted to Me. He sang many Vedic hymns to Me and performed the home rituals (fire sacrifices) just to satisfy Me. He respected the twice-born Brahmins and engaged them in performing sacrifices daily. This great soul had a quarrel with Indra, however, and eventually defeated him in battle. Bali took over his entire celestial kingdom, which I Myself had given to Indra. Therefore Indra and all the other devas (demigods), along with many great sages, approached Me and complained about Bali Maharaja. Bowing their heads to the ground and offering many sacred prayers from the Vedas, they worshipped Me along with their spiritual master, Brihaspati. Thus I agreed to appear on their behalf as a dwarf Vamanadeva, My fifth incarnation." King Yudhishthira further enquired, "Oh Lord, how was it possible for You to conquer such a powerful demon, and only by coming in the form of a dwarf Brahmin? Please explain this clearly, for I am Your faithful devotee." "The Supreme Lord, Sri Krishna replied, "Though a dwarf, I was a Brahman, and I approached that pious king Bali to ask him for alms in the form of land. I said, 'Oh Daityraj Bali, please give Me just three steps of land in charity. Such a small piece of land will be good as all the three worlds for Me.' Bali agreed to grant my request without lengthy consideration. But as soon as he vowed to give me the land, My body began to expand into a gigantic transcendental form. I covered the entire Earth with My feet, all the Bhuvarloka with My thighs, the Swarga heavens with My waist, Maharloka with My stomach, Janaloka with My chest, Tapoloka with My neck, and Satyaloka with My head and face. I covered the entire material creation. Indeed, all the planets of the universe, including the Sun and the Moon, were encompassed by my gigantic form." "Seeing this astonishing pastime of Mine, all the demigods, including Indra and Shesha, the king of the snakes, began to sing Vedic hymns and offer prayers to Me. Then I took Bali by the hand and said to him, Oh sinless one, I have covered the whole Earth with one step and all the heavenly planets with the second. Now where shall I place My foot to measure the third step of land you promised Me? "Upon hearing this, Bali Maharaja bowed down in humility and offered Me his head to place My third step. Oh Yudhishthira, I placed My foot on his head and sent him all the way to Patalaloka. Seeing him thus humbled, I became very pleased and told Bali that henceforth I would permanently reside in his palace. Thereafter, on Parshva Ekadashi, which occurs during the light part of the month of Bhadra (August-September), Bali, the son of Virochana, grandson of Prahlad, installed a Deity form of Me in his residence. "Oh king, until Haribodhini Ekadashi, which occurs during the light part of the month of Karttika, I continue to sleep in the ocean of milk.On this day the faithful devotee should worship Lord Trivikrama, Vamanadeva, who is the supreme father, because on this day I turn over to sleep on My other side. "If possible, on this day one should give a qualified person some yogurt mixed with rice, as well as some silver, and then remain awake throughout the night. This simple observance will free one of all material conditioning.- published: 15 Sep 2013

Kamika Ekadashi is celebrated on the day of ekadashi during the Krishna paksha of Shravan month. This year, Kamika Ekadashi will be celebrated on 2nd August, 2013 Friday. Kamika Ekadashi is the best period for worshipping Lord Vishnu. Keeping a fast on this day frees a person from sins and problems. Ekadashi eradicates all problems and fulfills all desires. Kamika Ekadashi is considered to be the best time for worshipping Lord Vishnu. It is believed that the story about this ekadashi was told by Lord Krishna to Yudhishtir. Prior to this, it was told by Saint Vashishta to King Dilip, who attained salvation. Kamika Ekadashi Story In ancient times, there was a landlord in a village. Once this landlord had a fight with a Brahmana and killed him out of anger. The landlord wanted to repent by being a part of the Brahmana's cremation rituals, but was denied the permission. Hence, he was cursed with a Brahmana's killing. The landlord asked a saint if he could get rid of the sin. The saint advised him to keep a fast on Kamika Ekadashi. The landlord kept a fast in the same way as he was told by the saint. At night, the landlord was sleeping besides the Lord's idol. Lord Vishnu appeared in his dream and freed him of his sins. He was finally forgiven by the Lord. Kamika Ekadashi Worship On the day of Ekadashi, a person should take a bath early in the morning followed by a prayer dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The person should not consume water during the whole day and should keep on worshipping Lord Vishnu. Panchamrit, flowers, fruits, milk and sesame seeds should also be offered to Lord Vishnu. Feeding a Brahmana and giving him some money holds immense importance on the day of Kamika Ekadashi. A person keeping this fast gets whatever he desires. Kamika Ekadashi Importance Kamika Ekadashi gives auspicious results. A person worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day is blessed. Taking baths in places of religious pilgrimage is also considered to be important on this day. Kamika Ekadashi is as auspicious as Ashwamedha yagya. A person should take a bath early morning and offer various delights and delicacies to Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu's aarti should include dhoop, lamps, sandalwood etc. Worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day also frees a person from Pithru dosha. A person is able to free himself of material desires and attains salvation. It is believed that a person worshipping Lord Vishnu during Shravan month is blessed and gets equivalent results as worshipping snakes and gandharva. Lord Vishnu is most impressed when he is worshipped with Tulsi leaves. A person worshipping Lord Vishnu with Tulsi leaves is able to free himself of all sins. Kamika Ekadashi worship gives results equivalent to yagyas. Lord Vishnu is worshipped on Kamika Ekadashi. A person worshipping Lord Vishnu on this day gets auspicious results.- published: 02 Aug 2013

Parivartini or Parsva Ekadasi-Vamana Ekadashi-15th September 2013 (Sunday)
Why do we Hindus tie red thread -- Mauli A red thread known as Mauli or Kalava or Charadu is tied on wrist by Hindus before the beginning of a religious ceremony. The thread is tied on the right hand by males and on the left hand by females. The thread is tied to invoke the blessings of the Hindu deities especially of the particular deity to whom the puja is dedicated. Legend has it that Lord Vishnu during his incarnation of Vamana tied a red thread on the hands of King Bali to grant him immortality and to rule the netherworld. There is also a popular belief that the sanctified red thread with blessing of the deity protects a person from diseases, enemies and other dangers. The red string itself is usually made from thin red wool thread. It is worn, or tied, as a type of bracelet or "band" on the left wrist of the wearer (the receiving side). SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RED THREAD TIED AROUND THE WRIST It is customary for Hindus to tie a red thread - commonly called a mauli or kalava - on the wrist at the beginning of a religious ceremony. The thread is tied on the right wrist of men and the left wrist of women. The literal meaning of mauli is 'above all'. Here the reference is to the head that stands high. With the moon perched on top of Shiva's head he is referred to as Chandramauli. A person often puts on the red thread on one's wrist when doing a ceremony, ritual or puja, such as worship to the Ganga River, a deity, or for certain blessings. The thread helps preserve or imbibe those blessings when it is tied around one's wrist during the ceremony. The practice of tying the thread dates back to the time when Vamana Bhagwan tied this holy thread on the wrist of the progressive King Bali to grant him immortality. http://www.astrosage.com/2013/festival/vamanekadashi.asp http://www.drikpanchang.com/ekadashis/parivartini/parivartini-ekadashi-date-time.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bB3pkwwyJBw&feature;=share&list;=UUxPcnHQxea_gotOuI4n62NA- published: 15 Sep 2013
