Avalanche Skier POV Helmet Cam Burial & Rescue in Haines, Alaska
In April of 2008 I drove from Lake Tahoe to Haines, Alaska up the Al-Can highway through British Columbia and the Yukon with an enclosed 4-snowmobile trailer and a ton of gear. I told myself the year before after a few years of getting "shut out" with heli time, that I wouldn't come back up without snowmobiles....instead of sitting around drinking myself into oblivion on a "down day."
Well thank God we did that because we definitely had down days again right from the get-go. The sledding up at Haines Pass is out of control good. Even staying closer to town like below Old Faithful is great. Can't say enough about how much fun it is to ride snowmobiles up there with no trees.
So the first legit day after that main snow storm cycle, we still went out snowmobiling one more time wanting to let the snow set up a bit more....while another part of our group went up in the bird. Actually two groups went up in the bird, and the first group did all the normal day-after-storm-cycle snow pit and snow quality tests.
The first group decided that while the dangers remained elevated, that it was good to go. They all made some of the sickest pow turns in their lives I was told. The next group then - a couple hundred meters or so over - set up for their descent.
The guy in the video was the first one to drop from their group and while not a guide, he had a lot of Utah and AK backcountry experience. He had a Black Diamond Avalung on, but as you can tell from the video while he's talking as he's dropping in, it wasn't in his mouth to start. He tried to shove it in the instant of starting to get sucked down, but it didn't stay in fully during his ragdoll descent. It was just off to the corner of his mouth he said, and he definitely got some snow / ice in his mouth still.
So as he drops in you can also see the sluff to the skier's right immediately start building....and that's actually the chute that was the intended route down. For whatever reason - well pure, unadulterated powder will do it to you - he didn't go make some strong "skier cuts" into the upper pack to do one final snow check as instructed by the main guide who was doing the "tail gunner" work.
Instead he just sent it. And it didn't take more than a few turns out on this big shoulder above this cliff band to break loose.
This was a decent sized avalanche. 1,500 feet the dude fell in a little over 20 seconds. The crown was about 1 - 1.5m. The chute that he got sucked through to the skier's right was flanked on either side by cliff bands that were about 30m tall. He luckily didn't break any bones and obviously didn't hit anything on the run out.
He was only buried for 4 and a half minutes which is incredibly short. I cannot stress these next sentences enough; that in and of itself to be unburied in ONLY 4:28 is miraculous if you have any understanding of being caught in an avalanche and what it takes to be found. It could literally be some kind of "world record" just on how good the guide and supporting cast of other skiers was in getting to him. It also shows why you should ALWAYS be going with people trained in avalanche rescue / first aid....as well as why you'd want to be going with a guided heli operation. Sure this was terrifying for him, but he would've probably been dead if not for going with a guide.
He also got very lucky to be honest. In the time that he's buried, you can hear his breathing already accelerate. The ruffling noise back and forth is his chest rising and falling and the noise that his jacket makes. The intermittent whimpering noise you hear is him trying to swallow and get some air since the avalung wasn't fully in his mouth and instead just to the corner of his mouth. Still sends chills up the back of my neck. Oh...the luck? They located him so fast because his right glove came off just before he came completley to rest and there was an excellent visual of course.
And then the digging out is utterly amazing. I don't think that you could've paid a Hollywood crew to stage something better. The fact that he could've been facing any 360 direction and yet he's looking right up into the sun-filled blue sky with that first full scoop away of the shovel is borderline spiritual.
This is simply a very sobering and unbelievable video. However, you should take away from this video all the positive things that you can learn from it. Yes there are risks to the backcountry - but with proper gear, training, and guide(s) with avalanche and EMT training - you can greatly lower your chances of getting caught in an avalanche in the first place.....and coming back alive if you ever were to get caught in a slide.
Respect Mother Nature for sure. Learn from this. But just like a Craig Kelly in the snowboard world or a Shane McConkey in the ski world who died out in the backcountry (Craig via avalanche and Shane via ski B.A.S.E. jumping), they left this earth while doing the things that they were truly passionate about. Powellooza is an annual event in Lake Powell AZ. It's about 150 (mostly Mormons) people get together for 3 days about 20 miles boat ride in a secluded small island. All food/water is provided and some people sleep in houseboats and some pitch tents. It's pretty amazing...
LiveUnbound is doing what you love everyday and focusing your life on overcoming whatever it is that's stopping you from doing that. There are many reasons why people can't experience joy every day. It could be going to a job you don't love but need the money or in more extreme cases being controlled by powers that take away your freedom.
Our goal is to give happiness to those who have been deprived of it. Not just by inspiring people through videos but we want to take them on our trips and document their experience.
If you are interested please comment on the facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/LiveUnbound) and share your story. Are you unable to experience joy on a regular basis and why? Also if you have found a way to live a happy fulfilled life then share how you accomplished that. Or just share your opinions.
This initiative was inspired by the hundreds of comments on this video after it got over a million views on youtube. Here is one that seems to sum it all up:
"Although that I'am from a third would country and i will never have the chance to have fun and enjoy life as much as these people do, although that my youth will be wasted without having one moment of such a happy joy, I'am glad that there are humans whom their luck was so fortunate to them to allow them to have what I have been denied."

THE ARMY OF LUCK, OR THE GLOBAL PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
The Maneki Neko (jap., literally Beckoning Cat; aka Lucky Cat, Money Cat) is a common Japanese figurine which is believed to bring luck, attract customers and bring prosperity. The Lucky Cat waves with the raised left paw and holds a historic coin in front of itself with the right one. The Lucky Cat as talisman and selling product is wide-spread in Asia and meanwhile almost all over the world.
Luck is associated here with monetary and material prosperity.
For tourists the Lucky Cat became a kind of pop style Manga character which appears in growing numbers in western private households. As kitschy-petite like exotic souvenir it refers to a certain idea of western lifestyle.
The material element of the installation»The Global Pursuit of Happiness, or: The Army of Luck« is the »Lucky Cats' Matrix«. It contains 520 shiny golden XXL Lucky Cats made of plastics which are arranged in 40 rows and 13 columns on a ramp-like stand made of aluminum (W 8 m, H 3 m, D 2 m).
Visitors experience the Lucky Cats' Matrix as a dot-matrix display which consists of 520 waving paw grid points as its »pixels«. In each cat a servomotor is built in to control the paws move exactly in position and speed.
The visitors are requested imaginarily by the cats to interact as users: "Your concept of happiness is our lucky command. Write it on the keyboard".
Words and sentences up to 40 characters can be put in and are displayed clearly visible with the paws letter by letter as sliding text marquee. So to say, the users »choreograph« the Lucky Cats performance wordwise. Literally it is the »inscription« of an idea of happiness or a wish in the Lucky Cats' bodies by moving their paws forward and backward.
For users, the Lucky Cats become multiplied »avatars« in the world of chance and happiness. But the Lucky Cats are also able to perform spontaneously as well: they can show 25 different salutatory and signalizing gestures as well as mass movements like the »Mexican Wave« or an ecstatic »hyperkinesis«. Every displayed sentence triggers audio events – sound samples of mass or group events, like entertainment shows, political speeches, demonstrations, sport events, parades, accidents, etc. from the beginning of the last century until today. The sounds express auditorily different states of mind, like joy, euphoria, desire, fear, hate, aggression and resignation, astonishment, outrage, pain, panic, desperation and fanatical excitement. The sounds are played in random order and unpredictable combinations. Different contexts and changing settings are emerging.
Are the Lucky Cats »one-armed bandits«? Or is it a gesture in the context of a political or religious movement? Is it a just a happy waving of the fun-loving, hedonistic society? Or is the assembly of Lucky Cats a revolutionary deployment of »wish machines« as »army of luck« or is it just another marketing campaign?
The lined up, gold-reflecting mass of the Lucky Cats in the matrix appears almost as an insubstantially copy-paste-animation. The Lucky Cats in the matrix as an industrial made product become an »ornament of the masses« for repetetive-stererotype and globalized-industrialized ideals. Do we need more and more Lucky Cats to generate more and more prosperity for more and more people?

THE BOX PRO - FINAL DAY
Margaret River local, Ryan Hardy (WA, AUS) has conquered bodyboarding's finest and some of the craziest conditions Mother Nature could produce to claim the second event on the 2011 IBA World Tour, the IBA Box Pro.
In wild and dangerous five-metre plus waves, 31 year-old Hardy defeated Brazil's Magno Oliveira (Guarapari) in a 30-minute final, earning himself 2,000 valuable Grand Slam Series ratings points and second place on the IBA World Ratings heading into event three scheduled for Arica, Chile beginning May 20th.
Hardy choked back tears as he accepted his trophy on the presentation dais in front of his wife, Leah and newborn son, Oliver, while friends and fellow Margaret River locals, cheered the most prestigious win of his career.
“It means so much to win at my home break and with your friends and family and everyone here from my hometown, it's the biggest win of my career by far. To get the conditions we have and to be able to win is just incredible, it's a dream come true, said Hardy.
Hardy did not drop a heat the entire event, and admitted 20 years of surfing the break was the major factor in his win, particularly on a day where riders were faced with giant waves that threatened to close out the entire bay from Margaret River's Surfers Point, to the Box itself.
I could see the guys who hadn't surfed out there much were getting pulled out of position. Knowing the way the water moved around on the reef was a huge advantage. When a wave breaks at the Box, it's much more intense than a lot of places, you have these swells that travel so far through the Indian Ocean and then hit this shallow slab of reef. It can be dangerous, but if you know which ones to catch, then it's easily one of the most exciting waves in the world, said Hardy.
I've surfed it this big before, but never in competition. Today it was twice as big as forecasted, so it definitely caught everyone by surprise.
Hardy's first leapt to prominence on the international bodyboarding stage came when he claimed the Tahiti Skins at the notorious Teahupoo in 2000. His second major win was at Cronulla's Shark Island near Sydney in 2006. He has also won at Hawaii's famous Banzai Pipeline in 2009.
Oliveira's runner-up performance was world-beating; the 26 year-old eliminated two world champions on the final day, taking out reigning champion Amaury Lavernhe (REU) in the semi-finals and six-time world champion Guilherme Tamega (BRA) in the quarter-finals to post what is easily the best result of his career.
It was the best result of my life for sure. These are the kind of waves are the waves I like best. There are giant waves and it's shallow and pretty dangerous. You don't see any other sports run in these kind of conditions. I'm proud of being a bodyboarder and days like this, said Oliveira.
Oliveira's path to the final also would not have been possible if it were not for the implementation of the unique new three round non-elimination format at the IBA Box Pro. Oliveira missed his first heat entirely when he went for a warm up session at a nearby break during, but good placings in his following two outings saw him survive the cut and qualify for Round 4.
Miracles happen, I went through a lot of miracles to make the final, laughed Oliveira. So I knew I could do it. But there wasn't many waves in the final. I had a lot of cramps in my last heat. It was so inconsistent. I had a bad selection, maybe if I had more time against Ryan, it was tough, he added.
If a single move summed up the commitment of the riders in such wild conditions today, Oliveira's invert air on a stepped-out 10-ft plus Box mutation during his semi was prime example.
With one eye on the lip and the other on the reef lurking just inches below the surface, Oliveira punched for heavens and landed the giant air, with the wave gobbling him whole moments after impact.
Even reigning Wold Champion, Lavernhe, who was eliminated by Oliveira in the heat, was impressed.
I was in the lineup and I had priority. I saw him take off on that set wave and I thought, Okay, that's good for me, He's going to be wasting his time, then I looked behind and I just saw his body flying through the air and I was like, Oh, sh#t! That's a big air!
I asked him, Did you land it? and he said yeah. That was the biggest move of the comp. He was ripping the whole competition, so I am stoked for him.
South African, Mark McCarthy (Richard's Bay) finished equal third alongside Lavernhe today, McCarthy falling victim to Hardy's rampaging hometown finals run. Though there was a glimmer of hope for the visiting 27 year-old, he had Hardy on the ropes with less than a third of their semi-final remaining.
Ryan was really patient. We had like 15 minutes where the sets poured in from the wrong direction and messed up the lineup. So we had to wait for it to clean up, then Ryan was lucky to get those good ones and he surfed them like a champ. I knew I was ahead for most of the heat, then Ryan got those s
