The Gothic Art of Victoria Frances
Victoria Francés was born on October 25th, 1982. From her early childhood she was fascinated by the beauty of the forest in Galicia, where she spent much of her infancy. After traveling to cities like London and Paris she was hypnotized by the atmosphere there, the same that brought to life legendary masterpieces of Gothic literature. Her illustrations and sketches recall the dreamlike world of Gothic Romanticism. Influenced by pre-Raphaelite paintings, she chooses subjects that take us to a symbolic, magical and ancient world. All the sufferings of the outcast of this world is shown in dark castles and mansions with flickering lights, with the distinct influence of Goethe, Edgar Allan Poe, Baudelaire and even Bram Stoker. She attended the San Carlos University, Valencia, Spain where she studied Fine Arts. There she started working as an illustrator while also designing various book covers and other commissioned pieces. Favole, her first illustrated book, is the remembrance of three cities, Verona, Venice and Genoa, and it was the sensation in the 2004 Saló del Còmic in Barcelona, attaining widespread success in all the countries where it has been published. Soon after Favole II & III followed gaining her even more success. Her most recent published work is called El Corazón de Arlene (Arlenes heart) in 2008. This exceptionally gifted artist and at the same time marvelous illustrator and narrator can expect a successful future ahead of her. Her ability to make readers ...

Alt-J’s debut album ‘An Awesome Wave’ was released at the end of May 2012, crash landing into the Top 20 whilst peaking at #3 on iTunes, making it one of the biggest debuts of the year so far. An amazing feat for a debut album by an indie act with little marketing, it caused a shockwave in the pop and r’n’b dominated charts. The release came with a plethora of amazing reactions that saw it touted as the “hottest debut album” by NME, hailed as “strong, addictive and enthralling’ by the BBC and chosen as album of the week on Radio 1 and album of the day on 6music. The singles have been Record of the Week for Greg James, Huw Stephens and Fearne Cotton. DJs across Radio 1, 6music and Radio 2 are united in their praise of the album. Online the album continues to spread, with over 1million plays on their soundcloud to date.
Earlier this year, French production company COSA, who conceived innovative videos with a different point of view, concocted a unique project to unite a director, artist and contemporary music group to create a provocative music video
The director Guillaume Cagniard, Artistic Director of JR for many years, made the connection between COSA and the Galerie Perrotin, who represents some of the greatest artists of the moment: Sophie Calle, Maurizio Cattelan, Wim Delvoye, Elmgreen & Dragset, JR, KAWS, Takashi Murakami, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Xavier Veilhan...
After the success on their first collaboration with Massive Attack and Galerie Perrotin to create a unique two-minute video, COSA approached the prominent Belgian artist Wim Delvoye to develop their next video project.
Wim Delvoye has developed an art that offers a reinterpretation of artworks of the past while laying down a lucid and amused glance at contemporary society. He explores art history, Gothic cathedrals and sculptures of the 19th century, from Bosch and Brueghel to Warhol, simultaneously revealing the beauty of daily objects. With a Baroque gesture between homage and irreverence, he appropriates and deforms the motifs that inspire him. It was decided that the band who most suited the artistic vision of Wim Delvoye was Alt-J, specifically the song ‘Fitzpleasure’.
The video for ‘Fitzpleasure’ was shot in one day in a studio in Paris. Living artwork performer Tim Steiner, who turned his back into a piece of art after being tattooed by Wim Delvoye, came especially from London to be part of the shoot. After two weeks of post-production, the video has now been delivered.

Black Black Hills - "The Celebration"
We've just Written, Directed & Produced this Short Film/Music Promo for Black Black Hills’ debut single ‘The Celebration’.
Upon hearing the track we immediately felt inspired to create something that was firmly rooted in British folklore.
Black Black Hills’ single ‘The Celebration’ is available from itunes and Amazon now. Check out their Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/blackblackhills and their Soundcloud page http://soundcloud.com/blackblackhills
'The Celebration’ is a thematically and emotively dark sounding song. Because of this we wanted to tell a simple but very cinematic and gripping story focusing on the atmosphere of the track without being a literal translation of the lyrics.
As the track is so evocative, we felt that to do the song any justice we needed to tell a story. We also purposefully wanted to create something that subtly blurred the boundary between ‘Short Film’ and ‘Music Promo’.
The outcome of our efforts was a unique take on the idea of a modern gothic thriller. A story that combines the sort of imagery familiar to ancient folklore, pagan-esque ceremonies and the creepy stuff of ‘pulp literature’ style ghost stories. ‘The Celebration’ purposefully sets out to embrace the notion of a ‘British Mythology’. To create a contemporary fable that celebrates the mystifying forces of nature which lie deep within the ancient woodland and forests of rural England.
The film itself tells a tale of the furtive exploits of an illegal metal detectorist (a ‘Nighthawk’) in a rural English landscape as he sets about trespassing and plundering secluded parts of the land with dire consequences. This allowed us to build a narrative foundation with which we could turn the everyday, the idyllic and the quaint into something far more sinister.
We wanted to teeter on the brink of the unknown and play with the primal instincts buried deep within the collective, evolutionary psyche.
The shoot:
As this was a self funded by us (Blac Ionica) for Black Black Hills, we had a very limited budget which in turn dictated what format we could shoot on. We knew we wanted to shoot something very cinematic but it had to be on a budget, so in light of that and after extensive discussions with the D.O.P. we decided to shoot on a Canon 7D with a steadicam rig and Anamorphic Prime lenses.
We shot for two days in two separate locations with a fantastic cast and crew. The first day of shooting was slightly thwarted by our unpredictable ‘British summertime’ weather, but in the end it actually worked in our favour, as it helped to create an additional overall ‘moodiness’ that we hadn’t bargained for at this time of year.
Post production was handled by ourselves with the help of our excellent team of freelancers and compositors. All of which was further enhanced through the grade which was kindly provided by the Moving Picture Company, London.
A little bit about the Directors/us:
We are a Film Directing trio called Blac Ionica, we are based in London and we also shoot Commercials and make Title Sequences. In 2009 we were nominated for a UK Music Video Award.
