"Hori Smoku Sailor Jerry: The Life of Norman K. Collins" is a documentary that explores a deep look into the history of tattoos in America through the life of "Sailor Jerry", one of the most iconic figures in the tattoo industry. He´s even considered the father of the Traditional American tattoo style.

Mike Brown is a tattoo artist who, if you know your history, always comes up when people talk about those who pioneered tattooing in the late 1970s. He worked at China Sea (formerly owned by Sailor Jerry), ground zero for traditional American tattoos, and at the birthplace for black grey penitentiary-style tattoos, Good Time Charlie's Tattoo Land. His life has had some ups and downs over the years, and they've made him a little hard to track down if you're looking to get a Mike Brown tattoo. But we had the chance to visit Honolulu in January and made sure to stop by the shop Mike works at to ask him about the old days. He still tattoos five days a week, and we'd wager that most people who see him have no idea about his pedigree. His portfolio alone is a history lesson in tattooing, with everything from the most beautiful Chola's, Pin Ups, mean ass biker skulls, and touristy sea turtle tats. Mike Brown still does it all, and does so with the most humble manner.

Norman Keith Collins (January 14, 1911 - June 12, 1973) was a prominent American tattoo artist, famous for his tattooing of sailors; he was also known as "Sailor Jerry".
Collins was born on January 14, 1911 in Reno but grew up in Northern California. As a child he hopped freight trains across the country and learned tattooing from a man named "Big Mike" from Palmer, Alaska, originally using the hand-pricking method. In the late 1920s he met Tatts Thomas from Chicago who taught him how to use a tattoo machine. He practiced on drunks brought in from Skid Row.
He later sailed the Pacific Ocean before settling in Hawaii in the 1930s.
At age 19, Collins enlisted in the United States Navy. During his subsequent travels at sea, he was exposed to the art and imagery of Southeast Asia.
During his career as a tattoo artist, he worked as a licensed skipper of a large three-masted schooner, on which he conducted tours of the Hawaiian islands.
In addition to sailing and tattooing, he played the saxophone in his own dance band and frequently hosted his own radio show on KTRG (AM) where he was known
as "Old Ironsides".
Legacy of Sailor Jerry
Collins entrusted his artwork to his two protégés, Ed Hardy and Mike Malone.
Collins is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, a military cemetery located in Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu.
His gravesite is 124/Section T.
His widow still resides in Hawaii, as does a son.
Collins expanded the array of colors available by developing his own pigments. He created needle formations that embedded pigment with much less trauma to the skin and was one of the first artists to utilize single-use needles and to use an autoclave for sterilization.
Sailor Jerry's last studio was at 1033 Smith Street in Honolulu's Chinatown, then the only place on the island where tattoo studios were located.

Three bad-ass, bike building teams from across the UK will be tasked with a series of epic challenges and compete against each other on a hell raising journey of balls-to-wall riding.
This year’s teams, hailing from across Great Britain, include Hackney Wick’s finest bike specialists, Kingdom of Kicks, Welsh motorcycle club and hot rod masters, FTHaters and 2015’s returning challengers, The Ride Originals, who will take on an action packed schedule of hard-hitting challenges on this 9 day tour, in a bid to crowned champions of The Ride 2016.
Before setting off, teams will be tasked with customising their own brand-spanking new Harley-Davidson Street Bob; from sweet handlebars to awesome paint jobs, the public will get to vote for their favourite ride with the winner collecting those all important points.
Each team will be handed their challenge book and routes as they set off, and tasked with making their own way across the country, competing for points along the way. Nationwide challenges will see the teams fight for the lead as they take on epic eating competitions to pit bike races, cutting each other’s hair to wearing their helmet for 24 hours straight- the teams will go head to head to win their Harley and a trip to Norman Collins’ spiritual home, Hawaii. Rolling towards the finish line on the 9th July, the riders will have 24 hours to complete their final challenges face to face ahead of the winner being crowned on 10th July.
James Jordan
Kingdom of kicks was started by James Jordan, Nico Sclater (ornamental conifer) and Ben Claasen in a workshop in Hackney wick, London. Ben and Nico have moved to New Zealand and USA. James still lives and builds bikes out of the warehouse in Hackney Wick.
James first got into bikes after buying an old Royal Enfield in India after a snowboard season in Kashmir. Since living in London for 8 years and buying more and more bikes to work on he started building bikes for friends. His first full build featured on bike Exif (bikeexif.com) was a 1977 cj360 named Moonshine. It tools 2 years to complete but taught him all the skills required to customise a bike including wiring, welding, engine work and fabrication.
Since then he has built several bikes for customers mainly based around the cafe racer style. His own personal taste for vintage choppers has led him to customise his 1970 t120 triumph into a chopper and also start work on a 1957 FL Harley Davidson.
In his spare time he maintains and races his 1958 triumph tiger 110 in the DTRA vintage class.

Being the grafter that he is, Andy left school at 16, working as a labourer and pulling pints in his local pub. He is now a successful music agent representing talent from across the world and his trips to the pub are far more interesting BUT his true passion lays elsewhere...
Somehow amongst Andy's busy schedule he’s nurtured an obsession with bikes - as well as battering a storm of Fat Damon jokes, because Andy looks like Matt Damon, but fat - it really has been a gift from the bearded baby Jesus.
Over the years, Andy's ridden an '92 FZR600, a 72' CB 500 Four, and a 1980 XLH 1000 hardtail chop… it's been a glorious symphony of letters and numbers; much like Sesame Street.
In the last few months, Andy started tinkering with a 1977 FX 1200 - expected to be gracing the London roads by summer. Or rotting in a garage somewhere - it's all part of life's rich tapestry!
Andy still lives in Hackney and still looks like a fat Matt Damon.
Paul Hill
Paul Hill, tattooer and owner of Vagabond Tattoo Studio in Hackney is originally from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
He spent his former years riding dirt bikes and BMX and at 16 started his working life in a custom bodyshop painting and airbrushing cars and motorbikes. Eventually his passion for tattooing took over leading him to London.

Three bad-ass, bike building teams from across the UK will be tasked with a series of epic challenges and compete against each other on a hell raising journey of balls-to-wall riding. This year’s teams, hailing from across Great Britain, include Hackney Wick’s finest bike specialists, Kingdom of Kicks, Welsh motorcycle club and hot rod masters, FTHaters and 2015’s returning challengers, The Ride Originals, who will take on an action packed schedule of hard-hitting challenges on this 9 day tour, in a bid to crowned champions of The Ride 2016. Before setting off, teams will be tasked with customising their own brand-spanking new Harley-Davidson Street Bob; from sweet handlebars to awesome paint jobs, the public will get to vote for their favourite ride with the winner collecting those all important points. Each team will be handed their challenge book and routes as they set off, and tasked with making their own way across the country, competing for points along the way. Nationwide challenges will see the teams fight for the lead as they take on epic eating competitions to pit bike races, cutting each other’s hair to wearing their helmet for 24 hours straight- the teams will go head to head to win their Harley and a trip to Norman Collins’ spiritual home, Hawaii. Rolling towards the finish line on the 9th July, the riders will have 24 hours to complete their final challenges face to face ahead of the winner being crowned on 10th July. James Jordan Kingdom of kicks was started by James Jordan, Nico Sclater (ornamental conifer) and Ben Claasen in a workshop in Hackney wick, London. Ben and Nico have moved to New Zealand and USA. James still lives and builds bikes out of the warehouse in Hackney Wick. James first got into bikes after buying an old Royal Enfield in India after a snowboard season in Kashmir. Since living in London for 8 years and buying more and more bikes to work on he started building bikes for friends. His first full build featured on bike Exif (bikeexif.com) was a 1977 cj360 named Moonshine. It tools 2 years to complete but taught him all the skills required to customise a bike including wiring, welding, engine work and fabrication. Since then he has built several bikes for customers mainly based around the cafe racer style. His own personal taste for vintage choppers has led him to customise his 1970 t120 triumph into a chopper and also start work on a 1957 FL Harley Davidson. In his spare time he maintains and races his 1958 triumph tiger 110 in the DTRA vintage class. Jeremy Radford Age: 34, Based: Los Angeles CA Handle: @raddyhd Been into to bikes since I was a kid. My dad always rode so I ended up doing the same. I grew up in North Carolina/Virginia… I’m an Art Director/Set designer and a part time bike builder in Los Angeles. I currently have a 1946 Knucklehead chopper "WakenBake" and a 2015 Dyna lowrider as my work truck, and I'm also working on a couple of Panheads. Andy Clayton Being the grafter that he is, Andy left school at 16, working as a labourer and pulling pints in his local pub. He is now a successful music agent representing talent from across the world and his trips to the pub are far more interesting BUT his true passion lays elsewhere... Somehow amongst Andy's busy schedule he’s nurtured an obsession with bikes - as well as battering a storm of Fat Damon jokes, because Andy looks like Matt Damon, but fat - it really has been a gift from the bearded baby Jesus. Over the years, Andy's ridden an '92 FZR600, a 72' CB 500 Four, and a 1980 XLH 1000 hardtail chop… it's been a glorious symphony of letters and numbers; much like Sesame Street. In the last few months, Andy started tinkering with a 1977 FX 1200 - expected to be gracing the London roads by summer. Or rotting in a garage somewhere - it's all part of life's rich tapestry! Andy still lives in Hackney and still looks like a fat Matt Damon. Paul Hill Paul Hill, tattooer and owner of Vagabond Tattoo Studio in Hackney is originally from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He spent his former years riding dirt bikes and BMX and at 16 started his working life in a custom bodyshop painting and airbrushing cars and motorbikes. Norman Keith Collins (January 14, 1911 - June 12, 1973) was a prominent American tattoo artist, famous for his tattooing of sailors; he was also known as "Sailor Jerry". Collins was born on January 14, 1911 in Reno but grew up in Northern California. Norman Keith Collins (January 14, 1911 - June 12, 1973) was a prominent American tattoo artist, famous for his tattooing of sailors; he was also known as "Sailor Jerry".
Collins was born on January 14, 1911 in Reno but grew up in Northern California. As a child he hopped freight trains across the country and learned tattooing from a man named "Big Mike" from Palmer, Alaska, originally using the hand-pricking method. In the late 1920s he met Tatts Thomas from Chicago who taught him how to use a tattoo machine. He practiced on drunks brought in from Skid Row.
He later sailed the Pacific Ocean before settling in Hawaii in the 1930s.
At age 19, Collins enlisted in the United States Navy. During his subsequent travels at sea, he was exposed to the art and imagery of Southeast Asia.
During his career as a tattoo artist, he worked as a licensed skipper of a large three-masted schooner, on which he conducted tours of the Hawaiian islands.
In addition to sailing and tattooing, he played the saxophone in his own dance band and frequently hosted his own radio show on KTRG (AM) where he was known
as "Old Ironsides".
Legacy of Sailor Jerry
Collins entrusted his artwork to his two protégés, Ed Hardy and Mike Malone.
Collins is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, a military cemetery located in Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu.
His gravesite is 124/Section T.
His widow still resides in Hawaii, as does a son.

Norman Keith Collins (January 14, 1911 - June 12, 1973) was a prominent American tattoo artist, famous for his tattooing of sailors; he was also known as "Sailor Jerry".
Collins was born on January 14, 1911 in Reno but grew up in Northern California. As a child he hopped freight trains across the country and learned tattooing from a man named "Big Mike" from Palmer, Alaska, originally using the hand-pricking method. In the late 1920s he met Tatts Thomas from Chicago who taught him how to use a tattoo machine. He practiced on drunks brought in from Skid Row.
He later sailed the Pacific Ocean before settling in Hawaii in the 1930s.
At age 19, Collins enlisted in the United States Navy. During his subsequent travels at sea, he was exposed to the art and imagery of Southeast Asia.
During his career as a tattoo artist, he worked as a licensed skipper of a large three-masted schooner, on which he conducted tours of the Hawaiian islands.
In addition to sailing and tattooing, he played the saxophone in his own dance band and frequently hosted his own radio show on KTRG (AM) where he was known
as "Old Ironsides".
Legacy of Sailor Jerry
Collins entrusted his artwork to his two protégés, Ed Hardy and Mike Malone.
Collins is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, a military cemetery located in Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu.
His gravesite is 124/Section T.
His widow still resides in Hawaii, as does a son.

The ride is done! Check out all the updates as we upload them straight to you. Cheers guys.
Three bad-ass, bike building teams from across the UK will be tasked with a series of epic challenges and compete against each other on a hell raising journey of balls-to-wall riding.
This year’s teams, hailing from across Great Britain, include Hackney Wick’s finest bike specialists, Kingdom of Kicks, Welsh motorcycle club and hot rod masters, FTHaters and 2015’s returning challengers, The Ride Originals, who will take on an action packed schedule of hard-hitting challenges on this 9 day tour, in a bid to crowned champions of The Ride 2016.
Before setting off, teams will be tasked with customising their own brand-spanking new Harley-Davidson Street Bob; from sweet handlebars to awesome paint jobs, the public will get to vote for their favourite ride with the winner collecting those all important points.
Each team will be handed their challenge book and routes as they set off, and tasked with making their own way across the country, competing for points along the way. Nationwide challenges will see the teams fight for the lead as they take on epic eating competitions to pit bike races, cutting each other’s hair to wearing their helmet for 24 hours straight- the teams will go head to head to win their Harley and a trip to Norman Collins’ spiritual home, Hawaii. Rolling towards the finish line on the 9th July, the riders will have 24 hours to complete their final challenges face to face ahead of the winner being crowned on 10th July.
James Jordan
Kingdom of kicks was started by James Jordan, Nico Sclater (ornamental conifer) and Ben Claasen in a workshop in Hackney wick, London. Ben and Nico have moved to New Zealand and USA. James still lives and builds bikes out of the warehouse in Hackney Wick.
James first got into bikes after buying an old Royal Enfield in India after a snowboard season in Kashmir. Since living in London for 8 years and buying more and more bikes to work on he started building bikes for friends. His first full build featured on bike Exif (bikeexif.com) was a 1977 cj360 named Moonshine. It tools 2 years to complete but taught him all the skills required to customise a bike including wiring, welding, engine work and fabrication.
Since then he has built several bikes for customers mainly based around the cafe racer style. His own personal taste for vintage choppers has led him to customise his 1970 t120 triumph into a chopper and also start work on a 1957 FL Harley Davidson.
In his spare time he maintains and races his 1958 triumph tiger 110 in the DTRA vintage class.

I currently have a 1946 Knucklehead chopper "WakenBake" and a 2015 Dyna lowrider as my work truck, and I'm also working on a couple of Panheads.
Andy Clayton
Being the grafter that he is, Andy left school at 16, working as a labourer and pulling pints in his local pub. He is now a successful music agent representing talent from across the world and his trips to the pub are far more interesting BUT his true passion lays elsewhere...
Somehow amongst Andy's busy schedule he’s nurtured an obsession with bikes - as well as battering a storm of Fat Damon jokes, because Andy looks like Matt Damon, but fat - it really has been a gift from the bearded baby Jesus.
Over the years, Andy's ridden an '92 FZR600, a 72' CB 500 Four, and a 1980 XLH 1000 hardtail chop… it's been a glorious symphony of letters and numbers; much like Sesame Street.
In the last few months, Andy started tinkering with a 1977 FX 1200 - expected to be gracing the London roads by summer. Or rotting in a garage somewhere - it's all part of life's rich tapestry!
Andy still lives in Hackney and still looks like a fat Matt Damon.
Paul Hill
Paul Hill, tattooer and owner of Vagabond Tattoo Studio in Hackney is originally from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
He spent his former years riding dirt bikes and BMX and at 16 started his working life in a custom bodyshop painting and airbrushing cars and motorbikes. Eventually his passion for tattooing took over leading him to London.

Three bad-ass, bike building teams from across the UK will be tasked with a series of epic challenges and compete against each other on a hell raising journey of balls-to-wall riding.
This year’s teams, hailing from across Great Britain, include Hackney Wick’s finest bike specialists, Kingdom of Kicks, Welsh motorcycle club and hot rod masters, FTHaters and 2015’s returning challengers, The Ride Originals, who will take on an action packed schedule of hard-hitting challenges on this 9 day tour, in a bid to crowned champions of The Ride 2016.
Before setting off, teams will be tasked with customising their own brand-spanking new Harley-Davidson Street Bob; from sweet handlebars to awesome paint jobs, the public will get to vote for their favourite ride with the winner collecting those all important points.
Each team will be handed their challenge book and routes as they set off, and tasked with making their own way across the country, competing for points along the way. Nationwide challenges will see the teams fight for the lead as they take on epic eating competitions to pit bike races, cutting each other’s hair to wearing their helmet for 24 hours straight- the teams will go head to head to win their Harley and a trip to Norman Collins’ spiritual home, Hawaii. Rolling towards the finish line on the 9th July, the riders will have 24 hours to complete their final challenges face to face ahead of the winner being crowned on 10th July.
James Jordan
Kingdom of kicks was started by James Jordan, Nico Sclater (ornamental conifer) and Ben Claasen in a workshop in Hackney wick, London. Ben and Nico have moved to New Zealand and USA. James still lives and builds bikes out of the warehouse in Hackney Wick.
James first got into bikes after buying an old Royal Enfield in India after a snowboard season in Kashmir. Since living in London for 8 years and buying more and more bikes to work on he started building bikes for friends. His first full build featured on bike Exif (bikeexif.com) was a 1977 cj360 named Moonshine. It tools 2 years to complete but taught him all the skills required to customise a bike including wiring, welding, engine work and fabrication.
Since then he has built several bikes for customers mainly based around the cafe racer style. His own personal taste for vintage choppers has led him to customise his 1970 t120 triumph into a chopper and also start work on a 1957 FL Harley Davidson.
In his spare time he maintains and races his 1958 triumph tiger 110 in the DTRA vintage class.
Jeremy Radford
Age: 34,

Been into to bikes since I was a kid. My dad always rode so I ended up doing the same. I grew up in North Carolina/Virginia… I’m an Art Director/Set designer and a part time bike builder in Los Angeles. I currently have a 1946 Knucklehead chopper "WakenBake" and a 2015 Dyna lowrider as my work truck, and I'm also working on a couple of Panheads.
Andy Clayton
Being the grafter that he is, Andy left school at 16, working as a labourer and pulling pints in his local pub. He is now a successful music agent representing talent from across the world and his trips to the pub are far more interesting BUT his true passion lays elsewhere...
Somehow amongst Andy's busy schedule he’s nurtured an obsession with bikes - as well as battering a storm of Fat Damon jokes, because Andy looks like Matt Damon, but fat - it really has been a gift from the bearded baby Jesus.
Over the years, Andy's ridden an '92 FZR600, a 72' CB 500 Four, and a 1980 XLH 1000 hardtail chop… it's been a glorious symphony of letters and numbers; much like Sesame Street.
In the last few months, Andy started tinkering with a 1977 FX 1200 - expected to be gracing the London roads by summer. Or rotting in a garage somewhere - it's all part of life's rich tapestry!
Andy still lives in Hackney and still looks like a fat Matt Damon.
Paul Hill
Paul Hill, tattooer and owner of Vagabond Tattoo Studio in Hackney is originally from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
He spent his former years riding dirt bikes and BMX and at 16 started his working life in a custom bodyshop painting and airbrushing cars and motorbikes. Eventually his passion for tattooing took over leading him to London.

The Jerry Can Ride for Sailor Jerry feature length documentary. In November 2016, we created a ride that was not for the faint-hearted or small-minded. This ride dirty fingernails, white knuckles and growling engines. It was custom bikes, original rides and independent spirits. Starting off at the hills of Victoria to the wide open coast roads of Queensland covering 2500kms. Our travelling group rode into small towns and big cities and wreaked some serious fun. In the true spirit of Norman ‘Sailor Jerry’ Collins, our group of riders found the freedom to be themselves and test their character, and their bikes, on the open road.

Oliver Peck aka "Ducky" needs little introduction ever since he joined the judging panel on the hit Spike TV tattoo competition Ink Master, but this guy's been at it for awhile. Based at Elm Street Tattoo in Dallas TX, a shop he founded with Dean Williams, Oliver has been laying in color since he was 19 years old. Mike Brown is a tattoo artist who, if you know your history, always comes up when people talk about those who pioneered tattooing in the late 1970s. He worked at China Sea (formerly owned by Sailor Jerry), ground zero for traditional American tattoos, and at the birthplace for black grey penitentiary-style tattoos, Good Time Charlie's Tattoo Land. His life has had some ups and downs over the years, and they've made him a little hard to track down if you're looking to get a Mike Brown tattoo. Klinq: So I know you had a long road from where you started to where you are now. Can you tell me about how your worked your way up through the ranks and to the position you are in now?
EC: Well it's like they say, I was at the right place at the right time. I worked retail for a while and I tried to get my foot in the door of the modeling world. I did a couple of pieces with INK Magazine and I got a feature with them. So, if you go to any tattoo convention with INK Magazine you'll see my pretty face. I worked for an agency here in Las Vegas and a friend that worked for the agency called me and told me "there's this cool brand called Sailor Jerry and they are looking for some promo models." This was when the brand fist started getting started in Las Vegas about 3 years ago. I was like "yeah that sounds awesome" but I have never poured a drink and I have a really heavy hand so I don't know if anyone would really like my drinks but I was like "sure I'll do it!"
So then I got certified, I got super excited. Then I went to my first promo and had a huge panic attack because I had no idea what I was getting myself into but after the second promo I fell in love. I fell in love with the brand.
I was already aware of the brand, I was already aware of the product. I was already drinking it. I was aware of the clothing line and who Norman Collins was, so I was pretty well versed on the brand and product as a whole but I was jumping real head first into the liquor word. So then about 9 months into that a position opened up for a Brand Ambassador for the state of Nevada. I was interviewed and I was excepted so that was fantastic. At the same time I put in for a request to be a Sailor Jerry pin up modle for their 2011 calendars. I was picked for that as well, so I am miss July. So that is super cool and amazing and not a lot of people can say "they did that" or to say that they represent the brand in that way. Then about 2 years ago I was asked to take care of the whole portfolio for William Grant & Sons for the whole state of Nevada. So, I love my job.

I did a couple of pieces with INK Magazine and I got a feature with them. So, if you go to any tattoo convention with INK Magazine you'll see my pretty face. I worked for an agency here in Las Vegas and a friend that worked for the agency called me and told me "there's this cool brand called Sailor Jerry and they are looking for some promo models." This was when the brand fist started getting started in Las Vegas about 3 years ago. I was like "yeah that sounds awesome" but I have never poured a drink and I have a really heavy hand so I don't know if anyone would really like my drinks but I was like "sure I'll do it!"
So then I got certified, I got super excited. Then I went to my first promo and had a huge panic attack because I had no idea what I was getting myself into but after the second promo I fell in love. I fell in love with the brand.
I was already aware of the brand, I was already aware of the product. I was already drinking it. I was aware of the clothing line and who Norman Collins was, so I was pretty well versed on the brand and product as a whole but I was jumping real head first into the liquor word. So then about 9 months into that a position opened up for a Brand Ambassador for the state of Nevada. I was interviewed and I was excepted so that was fantastic. At the same time I put in for a request to be a Sailor Jerry pin up modle for their 2011 calendars. I was picked for that as well, so I am miss July. So that is super cool and amazing and not a lot of people can say "they did that" or to say that they represent the brand in that way. Then about 2 years ago I was asked to take care of the whole portfolio for William Grant & Sons for the whole state of Nevada. So, I love my job.

Klinq: So now time for the hard questions. If Sailor Jerry was an animal what kind of animal would it be?
EC: Wow that's a hard one. Well if Sailor Jerry was an animal what would it be, hummm... Sailor Jerry would totally be a penguin. They are kind of sneaky, they can slide around super easy and penguins are kind of like my favorite animal so I am kind of using the same one but they are kind of sneaky. They are kind of cute but they're mean! They can totally be mean and they are strong! AND they go down really smooth because all those other animals eat them like whales. See, so they totally go down smooth like Sailor Jerry!
Klinq: So every brand had a demographic they target. What's yours? Is Sailor Jerry just for the rock starts and people with tattoos?
EC: Sailor Jerry is not just for people with tattoos, it's not just for the punks, its not just for people who enjoy rock'n'roll, it's for people who enjoy really good tasting rum. So that's what makes is super cool and super special. We are still sticking true to who we are and that is kind of the underground scene and the tattooing and the punk rock. But at the same time we are opening up our horizons to meet new people.
Klinq: With so many different rums and spiced rums what makes Sailor Jerry different? What makes your product stand out among the rest?
EC: What's different about Sailor Jerry than talking about other products is I don't talk about the distillation process. I'll talk about the key notes witch are cinnamon, nutmeg and a hint of lime. But I really want to get through the story about who he [Sailor Jerry] was, and about how we are more than just a liquor brand, that we are a life style. People really adhere to that, they really enjoy that. There is something real behind that, they like telling the story, they like talking about Norman Collins and about who he was. They like saying 'hey I met this really weird girl that reps Sailor Jerry' and they like talking about that.
Klinq: So Norman Collins must have done hundreds of tattoos in his day. The one I am most familiar with and the one I like is the "Aloha Monkey." Can you tell me more about the Aloha Monkey tattoo?
EC: Yes! Aloha Monkey, he is so obscene I love it. It was a real monkey in real life. You can go and watch the documentary Hori Smoku, witch basically goes over the life of Sailor Jerry and his trade. There is also a book that we did, a beautiful coffee table book we did. If you read it you go on to see that there was a real monkey. The Aloha Monkey. And the famous tattoo is a monkey bending over and spreading his butt cheeks and it says Aloha and the O is his butt... his butt hole. I don't know if that's appropriate for the internet but it's exciting.

Mike Brown is a tattoo artist who, if you know your history, always comes up when people talk about those who pioneered tattooing in the late 1970s. He worked at China Sea (formerly owned by Sailor Jerry), ground zero for traditional American tattoos, and at the birthplace for black grey penitentiary-style tattoos, Good Time Charlie's Tattoo Land. His life has had some ups and downs over the years, and they've made him a little hard to track down if you're looking to get a Mike Brown tattoo. But we had the chance to visit Honolulu in January and made sure to stop by the shop Mike works at to ask him about the old days. He still tattoos five days a week, and we'd wager that most people who see him have no idea about his pedigree. His portfolio alone is a history lesson in tattooing, with everything from the most beautiful Chola's, Pin Ups, mean ass biker skulls, and touristy sea turtle tats. Norman Keith Collins (January 14, 1911 - June 12, 1973) was a prominent American tattoo artist, famous for his tattooing of sailors; he was also known as "Sailor Jerry". Collins was born on January 14, 1911 in Reno but grew up in Northern California. As a child he hopped freight trains across the country and learned tattooing from a man named "Big Mike" from Palmer, Alaska, originally using the hand-pricking method. In the late 1920s he met Tatts Thomas from Chicago who taught him how to use a tattoo machine. He practiced on drunks brought in from Skid Row. Norman Keith Collins (January 14, 1911 - June 12, 1973) was a prominent American tattoo artist, famous for his tattooing of sailors; he was also known as "Sailor Jerry".
Collins was born on January 14, 1911 in Reno but grew up in Northern California. As a child he hopped freight trains across the country and learned tattooing from a man named "Big Mike" from Palmer, Alaska, originally using the hand-pricking method. In the late 1920s he met Tatts Thomas from Chicago who taught him how to use a tattoo machine. He practiced on drunks brought in from Skid Row.
He later sailed the Pacific Ocean before settling in Hawaii in the 1930s.
At age 19, Collins enlisted in the United States Navy. During his subsequent travels at sea, he was exposed to the art and imagery of Southeast Asia.
During his career as a tattoo artist, he worked as a licensed skipper of a large three-masted schooner, on which he conducted tours of the Hawaiian islands.
In addition to sailing and tattooing, he played the saxophone in his own dance band and frequently hosted his own radio show on KTRG (AM) where he was known
as "Old Ironsides".
Legacy of Sailor Jerry
Collins entrusted his artwork to his two protégés, Ed Hardy and Mike Malone.
Collins is buried in the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, a military cemetery located in Punchbowl Crater in Honolulu.
His gravesite is 124/Section T.
His widow still resides in Hawaii, as does a son.
Collins expanded the array of colors available by developing his own pigments. He created needle formations that embedded pigment with much less trauma to the skin and was one of the first artists to utilize single-use needles and to use an autoclave for sterilization.
Sailor Jerry's last studio was at 1033 Smith Street in Honolulu's Chinatown, then the only place on the island where tattoo studios were located.

The ride is done! Check out all the updates as we upload them straight to you. Cheers guys.
Three bad-ass, bike building teams from across the UK will be tasked with a series of epic challenges and compete against each other on a hell raising journey of balls-to-wall riding.
This year’s teams, hailing from across Great Britain, include Hackney Wick’s finest bike specialists, Kingdom of Kicks, Welsh motorcycle club and hot rod masters, FTHaters and 2015’s returning challengers, The Ride Originals, who will take on an action packed schedule of hard-hitting challenges on this 9 day tour, in a bid to crowned champions of The Ride 2016.
Before setting off, teams will be tasked with customising their own brand-spanking new Harley-Davidson Street Bob; from sweet handlebars to awesome paint jobs, the public will get to vote for their favourite ride with the winner collecting those all important points.
Each team will be handed their challenge book and routes as they set off, and tasked with making their own way across the country, competing for points along the way. Nationwide challenges will see the teams fight for the lead as they take on epic eating competitions to pit bike races, cutting each other’s hair to wearing their helmet for 24 hours straight- the teams will go head to head to win their Harley and a trip to Norman Collins’ spiritual home, Hawaii. Rolling towards the finish line on the 9th July, the riders will have 24 hours to complete their final challenges face to face ahead of the winner being crowned on 10th July.
James Jordan
Kingdom of kicks was started by James Jordan, Nico Sclater (ornamental conifer) and Ben Claasen in a workshop in Hackney wick, London. Ben and Nico have moved to New Zealand and USA. James still lives and builds bikes out of the warehouse in Hackney Wick.
James first got into bikes after buying an old Royal Enfield in India after a snowboard season in Kashmir. Since living in London for 8 years and buying more and more bikes to work on he started building bikes for friends. His first full build featured on bike Exif (bikeexif.com) was a 1977 cj360 named Moonshine. It tools 2 years to complete but taught him all the skills required to customise a bike including wiring, welding, engine work and fabrication.
Since then he has built several bikes for customers mainly based around the cafe racer style. His own personal taste for vintage choppers has led him to customise his 1970 t120 triumph into a chopper and also start work on a 1957 FL Harley Davidson.
In his spare time he maintains and races his 1958 triumph tiger 110 in the DTRA vintage class.

Been into to bikes since I was a kid. My dad always rode so I ended up doing the same. I currently have a 1946 Knucklehead chopper "WakenBake" and a 2015 Dyna lowrider as my work truck, and I'm also working on a couple of Panheads.
Andy Clayton
Being the grafter that he is, Andy left school at 16, working as a labourer and pulling pints in his local pub. He is now a successful music agent representing talent from across the world and his trips to the pub are far more interesting BUT his true passion lays elsewhere...
Somehow amongst Andy's busy schedule he’s nurtured an obsession with bikes - as well as battering a storm of Fat Damon jokes, because Andy looks like Matt Damon, but fat - it really has been a gift from the bearded baby Jesus.
Over the years, Andy's ridden an '92 FZR600, a 72' CB 500 Four, and a 1980 XLH 1000 hardtail chop… it's been a glorious symphony of letters and numbers; much like Sesame Street.
In the last few months, Andy started tinkering with a 1977 FX 1200 - expected to be gracing the London roads by summer. Or rotting in a garage somewhere - it's all part of life's rich tapestry!
Andy still lives in Hackney and still looks like a fat Matt Damon.
Paul Hill
Paul Hill, tattooer and owner of Vagabond Tattoo Studio in Hackney is originally from Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.
He spent his former years riding dirt bikes and BMX and at 16 started his working life in a custom bodyshop painting and airbrushing cars and motorbikes. Eventually his passion for tattooing took over leading him to London.

As part of their launch strategy Sailor Jerry Rum will release a sizeable online campaign, created and directed by Autobahn.
The campaign will be supported by digital, print, events and social media activity across the brand’s digital channels.
It explores the lives of 4 characters that are big names of the underground scene in Sao Paulo (Brazil’s cultural hub).
Music, Tattoos, motorcycles and vintage cars are all part of the Sailor Jerry brand universe, and the campaign highlights the culture that surrounds these elements, telling the tale of how Brazilians developed their own vibrant scene.
Once more Sailor Jerry Rum sets out to honour the man Norman Collins (aka Sailor Jerry), bringing to life the lifestyle that can be described as American, but that we discover through this campaign is present in all corners of the globe.
