Bengali Language Status Spoken in: Bangladesh, India and some other countries Region: Eastern South Asia Total speakers: 230 million (2006) Ranking: 4-7 (native speakers; varying estimates) Language family: Indo-European Indo-Iranian Indo-Aryan Magadhi Family Assamese Bengali & Bengali Writing system: Bengali script Official status: Official language of Bangladesh, India, and Indian states of West Bengal and Tripura Regulated by: Bangla Academy (Bangladesh) Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi (West Bengal) Bengali or Bangla is an Indo-Aryan language of the eastern Indian subcontinent, evolved from Prakrit, Pâli and Sanskrit. Bengali is native to the region of eastern South Asia known as Bengal, which comprises present day Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. With nearly 230 million native speakers, Bengali is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world (it is ranked 5th in the world). Bengali is the main language spoken in Bangladesh; in India, Bengali is ranked as the second most spoken language. Along with Assamese, it is geographically the most eastern of the Indo-European languages. History Like many other Eastern Indo-Aryan languages, Bengali arose from the Magadhi Apabhramsha melting pot of Middle Indic languages, around the turn of the first millennium CE. Some argue for much earlier points of divergence - going back to even 500 CE, but the language wasn't static; different varieties coexisted and authors often wrote in multiple dialects. For example ...

Eastern India - UMR India Association - Diwali Night 2005
Eastern India presentation for Diwali Night 2005. Presentation made by UMR India Association. Presentation made by: Abhinay Rathore East India is a region of India consisting of the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Orissa. It is geographically between North India and North-East India, and shares many cultural and linguistic characteristics with Bangladesh, which formed part of this region before Partition. The Indo-Aryan languages spoken in this region descend from the Magadhi Prakrits spoken in the ancient kingdom of Magadha. Of these, Magadhi and Oriya, which remain virtually unchanged for over a thousand years, are considered the most direct descendants. Durga and Jagganath are particularly popular deities in this region. Puri is the eastern center for pilgrimage in Hinduism, and Bhubaneswar is considered to be the city of temples. West Bengal's capital Kolkata is the biggest metropolis of the region. However, the cities of Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri in Orissa, Gaur in West Bengal, and Bihar's capital Patna, were historically more prominent. Incredible India-Odissi Classical Dance (HD)-Part 1-Mangalacharan by Sujata Mohapatra
Odissi is one of the eight classical dance forms of India. It originates from the state of Orissa, in eastern India. It is the oldest surviving dance form of India on the basis of archaeological evidences. The classic treatise of Indian dance, Natya Shastra, refers to it as Odra-Magadhi. First century BCE bas-reliefs in the hills of Udaygiri (near Bhubaneshwar) testify to its antiquity. Traditional Odissi repertoire consists of: Mangalacharan- An invocational piece. After paying homage to Lord Jagganath a sloka (hymn) in praise of some God or Goddess is sung, the meaning of which is brought out through dance. Mangalacharan also includes the 'bhumi pranam', begging forgiveness of mother earth for stamping on her, and the 'trikhandi pranam' or threefold salutation - above the head to the Gods, in front of the face to the gurus and in front of the chest to the audience. Battu Nrutya- A dance piece offered to the Lord of dance - God Shiva in his 'Batuka Bhairava' form. This piece brings out the essence of Odissi. The interrelationship between temple sculptural art and Odissi dance is established with an array of sculpturesque poses taken directly from the innumerable dancing sculptures adorning the temples of Orissa. These poses are stringed together with steps in different rhythms. Pallavi- A pure dance item in which a raga is elaborated through eye movements, body postures & intricate footwork. Pallavi literally means "blossoming". This is applicable not only to the dance ...

COMMONWEALTH GAMES DELHI 2010-OPENING CEREMONY (HD)-CLASSICAL DANCES and YOGA-Part 1
The starting of carnival with traditional dances portraying the colours of unique seasons was really exquisite. Spring-Odissi, Summer-Bharatnatyam, Monsoon-Kathak, Autumn-Manipuri & Mohiniyattam, Winter-Kuchipudi. Man my head was raised with pride when India showed the world how we celebrate, when WE celebrate. Which country can claim that their dances have derived from the GODS and GODDESSES themselves. The grace, the music, the stances. It seemed as nature was manifesting itself ODISSI - Odissi is one of the eight classical dance forms of India. BHARATNATYAM - Bharatnatyam is one of the many traditional dance from India. It originated in grand temples of Ancient India. Its oldest description goes back to sangam literature(3 BC to 3 AD). KATHAK - Kathak (Hindi: कथक, Urdu: کتھک) is one of the eight forms of Indian classical dances, originated from northern India. This dance form traces its origins to the nomadic bards of ancient northern India, known as Kathaks, or storytellers. These bards, performing in village squares and temple courtyards, mostly specialized in recounting mythological and moral tales from the scriptures, and embellished their ...
