Duane Allman Slide Guitar Lesson
I thought it was time I tried to do a lesson. Although I'm not a guitar teacher, I feel it is my duty to pass on some of the things I have learned. Please have patience with my teaching style. I'll do my best to get the basic idea across. I spent a lot of years learning different styles of playing. The least I can do is try to give some of you guitar players a head start. I have been a Duane Allman follower since I first saw the Allman Brothers on August 17th, 1971. I was on vacation in Boston the summer I turned 16. My friends took me to the Boston Common for the concert of a lifetime. I was so inspired by seeing the ABB and Duane, I traded my acoustic for an electric as soon as I got home. Duane was in a class all his own. He played with so much heart and soul. Just yesterday I got a CD from the Boston Common show in the mail. It is the fifth release of some of the early shows with Duane. I really brought back a lot of great memories. It also inspired me to do this vid. This lesson is pretty general. It covers some of the basics of Duane's slide technique. I learned what I know of this style by ear over the years. Look for more lessons that go into more detail on specific songs.

The indie rock band Modest Mouse is getting the royal treatment from Bent Image Lab’s new director/partner Nando Costa. Just completed, the band’s new music video is a dark and expressive piece of film-making. Heavily rooted in live-action, the impressive six-minute video includes intense moments of stop motion, visual effects, and motion graphics techniques, all brought to life within the studio’s walls.
The visuals follow an artist who enters his personal sanctuary where he is presented with a hand-crafted drawing tool that assists him in materializing his mental impressions. Through drawing circular patterns, the machine discharges an endless web of yarn that guides him through his visual representations of his memories. The story progresses to reveal that he is divided between two worlds, one of dull reality and the second of warped memories. In the process of finding a way out of his consciousness, he is trapped between the two competing spaces, which eventually inflict lethal damage, acting as metaphors to self-destruction.
This lyrical and moving piece was conceived by Nando Costa working closely with lead singer/guitarist Isaac Brock to polish some of the film's intricacies. Featuring a seamless combination of live-action and stop motion that alternates between stage shots of Modest Mouse and a spiraling dream-like world of ever-shifting landscapes, Whale Song is a stunning representation of the combined capabilities of Nando and Bent. The variety and execution of the VFX portions of the video – from yarn reeling into complex patterns to a guitar that plays with no musician attached – strongly evoke the confused and surreal patterns of one's warped memories. Additional creative touches such as animated and intricate photographic collages and giant CG snails sliding across the band's stage – add variety and depth to the surreal world.
“This new video is the perfect showcase for the benefits of the collaboration between myself and Bent,” noted Costa. “I typically wouldn't have created a film with this much live-action or stop motion, and Bent also wouldn't normally approach a project with such a strong motion graphics influence, which is what I have long specialized in. With such well integrated in-house teams, I can’t imagine that there’s a project out there that we couldn’t pull off.”
One of the challenges in Whale Song was to recreate the contours of an ever changing, disorienting and intriguing series of landscapes. Costa shot the majority of the piece with Bent’s RED One cameras, which came in handy for their 4K capabilities when adding camera movement in post. In order to create the feeling that lead singer/guitarist Isaac Brock was being split up between two competing scenarios of pure reality and his imagination, for example, Costa mounted two of the RED cameras side by side on a custom plate, each with identical lenses set at an angle to simulate a stereoscopic effect.
In another instance, band members that appeared to be standing on the ground were actually hoisted aloft and secured to a fake ground plane, which meant that the stage floor was perpendicular to the ground. This situation intentionally restrained their flexibility and shifted the gravity, adding oddness to their movements.
Costa used a variety of frame rates, ranging from time-lapses at 6 frames per second, to 1000 fps shots from a Phantom camera to give the feeling of variety of speed in the character's memories. Blue screen stages were used extensively to place Isaac against the varying landscapes of mountains, dense forest valleys, and deserts. Bent's CG department was also responsible for creating significant portions of the video's landscapes and scenic elements.
During production, Nando and his team relied solely on a very detailed script containing technical and creative notes, live-action and animation guidelines, with specifications for composting and stop motion, which were all previously defined and polished by the director. “From what I’ve learned, producing a project at Bent is a wonderfully self-contained experience,” noted Costa. “From building intricate props to figuring out complex CG shots, Bent has specialists in all fields. I’ll walk over to the stage for live-action, then back to compositing, load the footage and work from there. It makes the whole process immeasurably easier, and creatively freeing.”
“Seeing this video makes me feel good about what we’ve done here at Bent”, stated Bent EP Ray Di Carlo”. We set out to establish a creative clubhouse atmosphere where talented people like Nando could come to work. I’ve always admired directors who can hold a project’s final vision in their minds eye and are able to let the talents around them do their respective jobs for a pr

A Midsummers Night Freakout
Recorded at The Space, Sacramento, California, July 15, 2006.
SPACE is a great little theater with bleacher seating. Lob put the show, A MIDSUMMERS NIGHT FREAK OUT, together. Lob and I have been doing things together for over 8 years. The night started rather peacefully, rather calmly, with Instagon playing jazzy trances. Like my band, Instagon is never the same line-up and never rehearsed together. This time Instagon was Lob on bass, Steve on guitar, Jim of The Shenanigoats on drums, Danny on trumpet, and another guy on the didgeridoo. Except for the didgeridoo-er, the rest would join my band for the night. When all was peaceful, BOTCHII messed it all up, blasting ultra-high energy punky noise assault. They are a trio of guitarist Tom Skowronskif and drummer Matthew “Lobster” Graybiel and Kevin Meecrob on pedals. They were simply mind-blowing great! Lobster would join The Cherotic All-Stars later, trading his drums for a mean guitar. Then after Botchii, a scary bunch of weirdos started setting up huge steel drums, power saws, giant puppets, etc. I smelled fresh danger of destruction. So I asked a member of UBERKUNST if we were safe sitting in the front row. We moved to the side! And Erika still got wounded in the chest by a flying shard of vinyl from Mary Martin’s South Pacific! UBERKUNST bills itself as “offensive fun, experimental music, noise ?music?, huge clumsy amateur theatrics and the scariest 13 person band on the planet.” Basically they presented your post-apocalyptic world where evil robots butt-rape and then disembowel humans (the disemboweling was rather whimpy!) … leading to a total chaotic destruction with a lot of banging, bashing, power saws grinding on metal drums, creating red hot showers of sparks. At the end everything was in ruin! Wendy O Williams would have been proud! From UBERKUNST, the “filthy bass” of Dire Deparra would join The Cherotic All-Stars’ jam!
So I had my work cut out for me! By Lob creating a brilliant line-up, he was forcing us to stretch, expand … take the night into soft, intimate, erotic trances … which is the opposite of UBERKUNST … but building on what had been created through out the night. To start I sat nude under strobes and slides, doing an emotional vocal solo for several minutes, moving, dancing, rocking back and forth. Then Linda and Erika naked except for pearls joined me in the moaning chant. They danced together, moving, pleasure rubbing deep into each other within infusion, soon enveloping me into the intimate body. Soon the rest of the band appeared, forming a semi-circle … Danny on Trumpet, Lob running around the stage banging on the tambourine, Steve Davis plucking his bass, Dr. Gruve blowing his harmonica, Dire pounding the bass, Lobster pushing his guitar, Tomek squeezing his accordion and playing other instruments, Jim beating the drums. At a certain point, Linda and Erika left me to cuddle with each band member, and then they went into the audience to cuddle with people as I wailed with the band. People are hungry for that deep human touch! When Linda and Erika got back to the stage, Erika tried to play clarinet…but quickly started moving with Linda again! The jam lasted over an hour.

One Love - Live In Madrid | Playing For Change Band
http://www.playingforchange.com/episodes/32 - Whenever the Playing For Change Band takes the stage, there is always a tremendous amount of love and energy in the air. For this very special performance it was even more palpable, as the band was joined by many of our friends featured in our various Songs Around the World: Tula's amazing vocals, Roberto Luti playing the National steel slide guitar, Francois Viguie on the bongos, Stefano Tomaselli on the sax, Venkat playing the tablas, and the beautiful choir vocals of Sinamuva.
This performance served as a powerful milestone in the evolution of Playing For Change. Seeing so many talented musicians from all different cultures and walks of life united on stage for this very special night was a physical manifestation of our mission: to connect the world and bring peace through music.
